“Where the fuck are my arms?” Fred yells.

His arms are now replaced by a meagre looking pair of wings, with claws at their ends.

“Told you so.”

Indeed. His father warned him about experimenting with his newly acquired talent. And if anyone knows about meddling with their physique, it certainly is his dad. The tier 16 ex pather with the ability to absorb monster skin into his own to form a natural armor has often told stories about his angsty phase, where he turned himself into a monstrosity by mixing and “matching” monster skin features. The accompanying pictures looked gruesome. The demonic humanoid with drake scales, faintly yellow glowing spikes dripping venom, serrated claws, multiple rows of shark teeth and a constantly shifting hypnotic pattern flickering above everything has certainly found its way in quite a few of my nightmares. He got his talent to accept his nails and teeth as skin adjacent enough to change them and used it to its most horrifying effect.

The now downright tame looking man continues to scold his son. “Modifying your body is a process that should be well thought out and planned, with multiple contingencies in case something like this happens.”

Fred bragged a lot about his new talent:

Tier 1:

Immediately after killing a rift boss, you can choose to direct the kill essence to form into a pill, which allows whoever eats it access to the power and skills of the boss by using up the essence contained in the pill.

Secondary Effect: Pills can absorb the bosses remains as well as essence directed to them, to gain more energy until they reach a point of saturation depending on the origin creature of the pill.

Tertiary Effect: When using a saturated pill, it is possible to choose to forego the power boost and instead try to take on a distinct characteristic of the pills origin creature by completely consuming the pill. The rate of success depends on compatibility with the chosen characteristics and the amount of available energy.

After testing it out, with his father supplying some essence stones to trivialize the charging process, Fred decided that just the temporary power boost was no longer enough, and since the boss of the nearest rift was a giant bird, he came to the “logical” conclusion, which having wings and flying would be cool.

Turns out humans are not very compatible with wings. His arms turned into stubbles vaguely resembling wings, which lost most of their feathers. Certainly not the grand show he had planned, when he invited most people, he knew to “behold his glorious talent.”

“There is a goblin rift a few hours of train travel away. With the boss there you should be able to get your arms back” supplies a helpful voice, barely managing not to burst into laughter.

Fun fact of the day: Goblins have green skin. Funny fact of the day: Fred’s arms now have the very same green skin.

In three days, there is a scheduled teleport to a world, which has a rift with monster possessing a human skin tone. Until then my friend has green arms. It does not seem to bother him that much. I admire his positivity.

When I get my talent next year, hopefully I won’t embarrass myself like that. I lack the confidence to stay dignified through something like this.

A few months have passes and Fred has come into some fame on the empire net for the videos of his reckless use of his talent’s transformation effect. A healthy mix of delving and essence stones has seen him rise to the peak of tier two and he came back from his travels into nearby worlds, so there are responsible adults to stop him from abusing his tier three talent effects without thinking first.

Tier 3:

You can store a number of these pills equal to your tier in your spirit and are able to gain their effect without consuming them.

Secondary Effect: After using a stored pills effect, you lose access to it for as long as it would take for your mana to naturally regenerate from empty to full.

“I’m going to put all my cultivation into mana regeneration and concentration to use this as much as possible!”

“No! You need at least enough mana to cast multiple skills. Also don’t forget your physical cultivation.” Fred’s dad interjects with his head buried in his hand in shame.

“Does this not consuming thing also work for the body modifications? Your tier one talent said it needs to completely consume them.”

“I have to try that out immediately!”

He pulls out a few pills and they disappear. I guess that is what storing them looks like.

Oh no! What have I done? His dad is glaring daggers at me.

“It works! Muhaha! Fear my power.” What I am fearing is your dad after he saw you dying your hair silver on a whim. At least it was a relatively harmless modification given the circumstances.

“Have mercy on us oh dork lord!” screams his siter, sarcasm practically dripping from her voice. One Second. Tow. Three. Fou- She erupts in a violent fit of giggles.

“Your lack of respect is disturbing.” The mock indignation, combined with the cheesy movie line makes the rest of the room burst into laughter. The cheerful atmosphere does a decent job of distracting of distracting everyone from my slip up. Thanks Hannah. You really saved me there.

As we exit the testing room, Fred’s father looks at me and say with a little smirk containing way too many teeth: “I didn’t forget that you tempted my son to do something stupid. Nothing bad happened and he showed at least some awareness of how to test his new power, so I am willing to overlook it. Just make sure to be more careful from here on out.”

He didn’t forget. Fuck!
