Fred came visiting for awakening week, the time of the year, where every child, which had its fourteenth birthday this year got to tier one.

I nearly didn’t recognize him. He certainly used the ability to repeatedly alter his body with his talent, as much as possible. Instead of a somewhat lanky and perpetually grinning guy, now before me stood a living mountain of a man. A slightly red complexion and honest to the emperor fangs gave him a slightly monstrous vibe, which was only strengthened by the bat-like wings that sprouted from his barely clothed torso.

“What are you wearing?” Thankfully, my mom asked the question before I had to.

He answered in a new very deep bass voice. “Hi. The wings are new. I am still waiting on the new wardrobe to accommodate them, so right now that is the best fitting clothing I had.” He said, his goofy grin perfectly masking the fact that he didn’t apologize.

“How are you doing Alex? Are you already exited for awakening a cool talent? I doubt it will be as impressive as mine, but that’s only because I have the best talent as all time.” He was still as boisterous as ever. All the physical changes really didn’t influence his personality at all.

“I am excited, but to be honest I just hope to get a decent talent for crafting. The whole fighting stuff seems a bit too much for me.” I replied.

“Just try it. The adrenaline rush is addicting. And the rewards are certainly worth it.”

“I … will try.” Peer pressure is certainly a weakness of mine.

So, the moment has finally come.

Tier 1:

Innate pseudo-bond spirit guide familiar. It takes the form of a small animal but has intelligence comparable to your own.

Secondary Effect: This familiar has skill slots equal to half your inner spirit and cannot absorb directly offensive skills.

A “Pseudo-bond spirit guide familiar”? I have heard about those. They remain fundamentally a part of a person and can turn immaterial to reside inside their spirit. If killed or destroyed, they will reform given enough time.

I could have gotten far worse than a spirit companion.

“So… How did it go?”

Instead of answering directly I willed my familiar to manifest. A small and somewhat translucent cat materialized on my shoulder and let out a “Nice to make your acquaintance. My name is Emilia Silva Luna Fluff-Born, but I will allow you to call me Emmy. From now on I will guide this child to greatness.”

“Wow. She is so fluffy.” My mom accurately observed.

“And has a strong personality.” Fred added. “Can she do any tricks?”

I felt a flash of annoyance, which was not my own flash through my mind.

Tell him I will not debase myself to perform tricks!

“She can telepathically communicate with me.”

Teeth sank into my ear. “Ahhrg!”

“What they meant to say is: She will not perform tricks for your amusement.”

“Why are you referring to me as they?” I asked, my curiosity temporarily overwriting the pain from my ear.

“No reason. Just think of it as a quirk of mine.” I could feel her smug smirk in my mind, and it did nothing to clear my confusion.

“So, she could perform tricks, but does not want to. Fair enough.” Fred seemed satisfied by the indirect answer.

“Now, that we have finished introductions let’s get you too outfitted for the PlayPen. Does Emmy have skill slots?” My Dad asked without bothering to hide his impatience.

“I do, but only half of their skill inner slots, so three for now. Also, I cannot absorb damage dealing skills.” Emmy explains and gets a short nod.

Two weeks later I was on another planet, sitting in a train on the way to a PlayPen. I was too nervous to fully appreciate the beautiful costal panorama. Luckily, Emmy had enough appreciation for both of us. I really was envious of her level-headedness.

My parents went slightly into overprotective mode and outfitted me with a tier one growth gambeson, able to absorb impacts and turn some of their energy into mana, which I could absorb. Additionally, I got an AI, and multiple skills modified by my mother’s talent to turn any skill she absorbed into her inner or core spirit into a mana-reserving variant of itself. There was [Phantom Garb] in my second core slot, as well as [Ball Lightning] and [Mana Endurance] in inner slots. They were variations of [Phantom Armor] [Jolt] and [Endurance], that mom had found to be highly effective, on her time on the Path. A magical plague had cut her climb through the tiers short, but she met my dad while recovering, so she didn’t complain about it too much. Emmy had been provided with normal versions of [Ranged Heal] and [Cleanse], to act as support.

A few tests in a local tier one rift had shown, that Emmy was good at dodging and could retreat into my sprit in a pinch, where she would enjoy safety and accelerated recovery. Whenever I allocated essence, she would get an amount of pseudo essence equal to it, that she could allocate for her own cultivation, so there were no problems with her being left too weak or cutting into my essence requirements.

I would have liked a bit less special treatment, but it was hard enough to get my parents to agree with me visiting the PlayPen on my own. Originally, I wanted to try myself on the Path, but I knew about the risks involved and could appreciate the safety my birth advantages brought with them.

An announcement interrupted my introspection. “In a few minutes we will be arriving at the PlayPen. If you leave at this station, remember to take all your belongings with you.”

It was finally time for me to become independent and take the first steps on my personal journey of cultivation and general self-improvement.
