Sweet Anecdote

“I’m not getting married yet. It’s just an engagement!”

“I really thought that the two of you were going to break up! My prayers were clearly heard by the heavens above! You need to keep going until the both of you finally get married!”

“What marriage? No, she will never get married to him!”

(TN: The last two sentences were spoken by Mira and Beryl, respectively.)

The two of them were completely immersed in their battle of words. My brother kept contradicting every word that came out of Mira, and Mira couldn’t care less about whatever my brother says. She couldn’t help herself to the point that she began to dance and circled around the drawing-room while holding the hem of her dress.

“Oh my, I’m really going crazy. I’m so happy for you! When are you planning to have your engagement party? Have you decided on what you’re going to wear?!”

“The date hasn’t been set yet, so even if you ask me that…”

“It’s okay. You have plenty of time to plan! You can both decide on the perfect date. Ooops, look at me! I haven’t told everyone else about the good news yet. I’ll go and inform everyone now!”

Mira slammed the door and ran out in a flash. While Mira enthusiastically spread the news around the mansion, my brother slumped onto the floor like a pitiful protagonist.

“…Are you okay?”

“What?”

“How could you choose to be with a psycho like him?… There are a lot of other prominent figures out there.”

My brother continued to mutter something in a low voice, so low that the words were incoherent, then suddenly, he clenched his fist.

“Let’s kill him.”

“What?”

“Yeah, let’s kill him.”

My brother jumped to his feet. His eyes were empty and lifeless.

“We are flesh and blood. Protecting my younger sister is my duty as a big brother. “

“No, I don’t really need protection.”

“I’ll turn him into a hedgehog from head to toe!”

(PR/N: He’s making a metaphor that he’s going to shoot as many arrows as there are spikes on a hedgehog.)

My brother immediately grabbed his bow as he quivered from anger.

“Just you wait, you bastard. In the name of the Fall family, I will never forgive you, Belial…’

“What nonsense are you talking about?”

‘Oh my.’ A black fan hit the top of my brother’s head mercilessly. ‘That looks really painful.’ I let out a sigh and immediately got up from my seat.

“Mother?”

Our father, who was standing next to our mother, coughed roughly.

“I’m also here, daughter.”

‘Oh my god, my father is here too.’ Beryl then rubbed the crown of his head as he glared at our mother whom she didn’t hesitate to stare back without blinking.

“You are the man who will lead our family in the future. You must not die.”

“…I’ve said this many times, I’m not going to die! Never!”

My brother pointed his finger at me.

“How can I die and I leave that one behind?”

Well, I’m undoubtedly smarter than him. If he uses an excuse like that, he’s definitely going to get hit again. Though, that’s just my opinion.

“Well, I’m also worried about Rose.”

Mother agreed. My father also began to express himself.

“No matter what, I’m always worried. I worry 24 hours a day…”

‘Then why did you all agree to this?’ Well, everyone needs to experience getting hurt to become humble. But then why is Beryl still here? Isn’t it time for him to go to work? I asked him as he got up.

“Why are you here, by the way? Didn’t you say you’re busy?”

“Is that the problem right now?”

Mother slumped into the soft armchair.

“My daughter went out to completely end her relationship, but instead she accepted a proposal.”

“Is that so?”

“She’s my daughter, and she’s amazing. She’s always been beyond my imagination.”

I suddenly became shy and scratched my head.

“Ah, up to that point…”

“It’s not meant as a compliment. What the hell did you two talk about?”

That’s when I heard my brother’s voice again. But I couldn’t tell them word per word. My mother is smart, and she also hates long explanations. I have to remain as concise as before, but I’ll also have to express it differently. I pondered for a moment, and answered.

“Mean aristocrats.”

“But you’re noble too?”

“I’m not mean.”

Mother nodded her head.

“That’s right.”

My brother shouted back.

“Mother, how can you be so positive about this?!”

My mother hit my brother’s head with her fan once again. Beryl then stopped yelling, and grabbed his head.

“What are you saying? Be quiet.”

“Ach, Mother…! Why do you only love Rose?!”

Mother asked the question softly.

“Do you really think that I only love Rose?”

“Yes, of course…!”

Mother then looked back at my brother, then he immediately straightened his posture.

“…No.”

“Good, thank you for understanding my heart. Now sit down.”

“Yes.”

This goes to show how influential and powerful our mother is in our family. As Beryl calmed down, mother leaned back from the sofa comfortably.

“Back to my question, what did you say?”

“Of course I said that we are good.”

“Even if he was the one who broke up with you first?”

Belial broke up with me thinking that he didn’t deserve me because he loved me too much. If he decided to break up with me because of another woman or because he no longer had feelings for me, he would have said, “What engagement? Leave now and never come back.” while cursing at me. I nodded my head, and my mother smiled at me sincerely.

“I can guess that you love him now, right?”

Love? Me? My eyes fluttered from what my mother just said, I’m destined to die by his hands… But if I told them that, I know that they won’t approve of the engagement. So I just obediently nodded to my mother’s question.

“Tell me. Why do you like him?”

“Mother, why are you suddenly asking such a question?”

My brother’s eyes narrowed.

“Just give her an answer right away.”

“Why is brother making a fuss again?”

“Because if you have no reason, I will break into that bastard’s mansion.”

“Ha.”

Well that makes it even harder for me to answer. Beryl then sat beside my mothers chair, without taking his gaze off me.

“In the first place, I don’t know why he’s so popular. I admit he’s handsome, but don’t you get tired of looking at him?”

“I always get tired looking at your face.”

“This is really…!”

Mother quickly beckoned to our father. Then Father immediately pressed on my brother’s shoulder. Now I can think a little more comfortably.

I pondered while ignoring my older brother, who’s trying to get up somehow. What are Belial’s good points? His face, of course, was his biggest strength, but if I answered with that, then my brother would definitely argue with me again. What are his best traits, what are his pros?

I remembered the encounter that I had with Belial earlier today. Now that I think about it, there was an occurrence in the past similar to what happened today.

‘I heard you made a mistake today.’

That day, Belial was reprimanding an employee who had made a mistake. I visited his mansion without notice because I was about to return the book I had borrowed from him. The employee at that time was shaking his head as he trembled.

“I’m very sorry my lord. Please spare my life.”

“If you valued your life, you shouldn’t have made a mistake in the first place-.”

“Belial, I’m here.”

As soon as he saw me, Belial’s face, which was previously as cold and hard as ice, slowly melted into a soft visage.

“Oh my gosh. Rose. Did you come all the way here with those fragile feet? If you had contacted me earlier, I would have met you in advance.”

(TN: Hahaha aww I just love Belial more and more)

“…Duke Serenity?”

“Oh, you should get going now. I’ll forgive you today, because today is a very pleasant day since Rose came to see me without prior notice.”

(TN: Hahaha our lovely puppy.)

It was amazing how this cold-blooded maniac would change 180 degrees in front of me and only me. As I remembered this, I started to mumble.

“If I look closely, I think he’s kind of cute.”

My brother’s face brightened immediately. He pushed our father away and got up.

“See? You like him for no reason!”

“·······”

On the other hand, mother and father didn’t say anything after that. They just looked at me with a serious face. Somehow, the atmosphere became worse than before. But my foolish brother who knew nothing immediately picked up his bow.

“Now I will turn that child into a hedgehog…!”

‘Damn.’ A fan hit my older brother’s head again. A black aura suddenly flowed out of my mother.

“Son, what do you mean?”

The mother’s expression was as serious as when she was working. Then my older brother looked up at our mother foolishly.

“Yes…?”

“You’re still young, so I guess you’re still naive about these things. The reason that Rose just gave us is the most valid reason in the world.”

Our mother then pointed a finger at our father.

“Our marriage partner has to be cute to suit our taste. That’s the truth of life.”

Father immediately turned his head in shame.

“No, I mean the truth is…”

“It’s not the time to be ashamed!”

My brother looked nervous, and my mother clicked her tongue.

“If you don’t receive love from your wife later, it’s because you’re not cute. Why don’t you learn from your father?”

“Are you serious?!”

I also agreed.

“That’s right. You need to be cute.”

 “Are you both being serious?!”

I’ve always been serious about everything I do. At the same time, my mother approached me after confirming that I agreed with what she said. My mother reverently wrapped her hands around my shoulder as if she was greeting a comrade.

“After all, you look just like me. I’m so proud of you. You’ve already realized what I realized only after meeting your father.”

My father clasped his cheek and smirked again.

“You too.”

“When will the engagement party be held? Invite your sweet boy to the mansion in the near future. Okay?”

My brother looked scared..! He continued to tremble as he looked at us.

“Lady! I just heard from Mira, is it true?”

“What?”

That night, all the maids were full of excitement. When I turned around from the bookshelf and asked, a maid jumped and shouted.

“You two are getting married!”

“What marriage? It’s only an engagement ceremony.”

“That’s it!”

Becky, Mira’s best friend, strongly agreed.

“That’s right. Once you’re engaged, marriage will surely follow.”

“I’ve already decided on how to celebrate our lady’s wedding.”

“Hey, you too? Me too!”

Mira and Becky gave each other a high-five and burst into laughter. While the other maids shook their heads.

“But I don’t understand. Why did you say that you broke up when you’ve already been thinking about getting married?”

“Well….”

I couldn’t tell them the truth. As I pondered on what excuse to give, Mira and her best friend Becky spoke up for me instead.

“Is he playing hard to get? Our lady should be a little more indifferent.”

“I’ll take care of everything that I need to take care of, but indifference is the base.”

“Because I never dreamed that kindness and indifference could coexist.”

No matter how hard I try, I can’t change my innate personality. Even though I tried my best, all the maids knew that I was indifferent. As I closed the book that I was holding. Mira’s eyes widened.

“Is it not good? Would you like me to get you another book?”

“No. It’s not that.”

I asked the maids while lying on the bed.

“If I had another break-up, would it be because of my indifference?”
