Chapter 14: Just a normal morning

Entering one of the command tents. I looked nervously at the person behind the desk.

Smoking a cigarette man probably in his late 40. Seems completely ignorant of my presence. from his look alone you could deduce that life didn't go easy on him.

After a couple of minutes of complete silence. The men finally spoke to me.

"So you are the new recruit aren't you"

"Yes, Sir!"

I said clearly and saluted.

Finally taking the first look at me. He examined me, raising an eyebrow in the process.

"Aren't you too young? How old are you, soldier?"

He asked with a bit of interest.

"18, Sir"

I answered.

"18 you say, the top brass are surely desperate to send someone like you to the frontlines"

He murmured something under his breath but I couldn't hear it clearly.

"Alright, I don't have time so just sign this and you are free"

He said dismissively pulling a piece of paper from the shelf nearby.

"Sir, what is this?"

I asked not really wanting to sign something I don't know the content of.

The man looked at me a little angrily and said.

"You young people ask too many questions just do it, that's an order!"

'Asshole' is what I thought but outside, I just nodded my head and did what he said. I just arrived here making an enemy of the lieutenant is surely not a great idea.

"Well, that is everything, report to the Sgt. Mark Kennes barracks a43. Dismissed!"

I was just to exit the tent when the voice of the man stopped me.

"Why did you join the military?"

Leaving a tent, I would swear that I heard him speak:

But I wasn't sure because the camp was quite noisy.....

After rinsing my mouth. I decide to take a shower. I need to wake up and the shower will surely help me.

Tossing the dirty underwear into the laundry basket, I entered a cabin.

Honestly, at first, I was little embarrassed wearing woman's underwear.

B)I am no longer men so....I don't need them.

Every day there are three lunch periods:breakfast, dinner, and afternoon dinner. At that time you just need to leave your room and in the corridor, nurses are giving away free meals.

But the food....

I mean, I am surprised myself but I became a little choosy when it comes to eating.

And the meat. I don't know but when I tried to force myself to eat it. I almost throw up after a few bites, it tasted horrible.

The only reasonable explanation, I could think of was that the original Kate was a vegetarian. She didn't eat meat. Because she just didn't like how it tasted and not because of other reasons.

So is that possible that she somehow passed it on to me?

Dunno but only that comes to my mind when I think about it. Meat was always a main of my diet but now it tastes just bad.

I don't know I'm confused and it's not like hospital food is horrible but it's just me...?

Is this how w true vegetarians feel? If so I pity them. What a horrible fate.

Because of this, I became quite traumatized and didn't go for free meals. But of course, I need to eat something so I was going lately to the cafeteria to eat or the small cafe that is on this floor.

There I have to pay for my meals but I guess it's worth it. Because I can choose whatever I like.

Okay, I decided let's go to the cafe. Before leaving my room, I took a black hoodie from my wardrobe and wear it. Looking at the mirror making sure that I look alright, I headed to the door.

Honestly now, I look like some kind of "bad girl" with my jeans and hoodie on. I am a fan of wearing hoodies, I will wear them all year round no matter what the weather is outside.

So I was really happy when I found two in Kates's cupboard.

When I went out of my room, I was quite surprised. Nurses were already in the corridor giving free meals.

Did I really waste so much time in the bathroom? Well, maybe it's a good thing because I don't know if the cafe would be open so early.

I said a little angrily and stepped on his shoes.
