Chapter 2: 2

Kano woke up to the sound of fiddling echoing across from her. They hadn't spoken to each other for hours, so she decided to turn her head. Ka Shin'u was facing the wall, tinkering with something. The case was open as he sat in the corner. It was quiet.

"What are you doing, Ka Shin'u?"

"..." His shoulders perked up, before going back to fiddling. "None of your business."

As she glanced at the case, recognized the shape of the padding. Kano sloped off the seats onto her two feet, her school uniform and hair slightly messy. Slowly she made her way towards him.

Kano bumped her hand on his shoulder, "Yah," she peeked over his shoulder, "So you play the erhu, huh."

Ka Shin'u quickly hunched over, coddling it in his arms. She lifted her hand off before he swatted it away.

"How did you know?"
"Anybody near, or familiar with Morokoshi would know," She shrugged her arms. "I'm tired, so I'm going to sleep."

"What..."

Kano nonchalantly slipped back into the passenger seat, resting her head near the window. For a moment she felt something. She blinked once and it disappeared. Per usual, she stared out the window.

"So you don't hate it?..."

He called out, his voice shaky. The train lifted as it ran over a bump.

"All instruments are capable of creating beautiful sounds," Kano answered, closing her eyes. She left it at that before she dozed off into another dream. She imagined that she became a hero.

Although faint, the sound of wailing trickled into her ears. The spur of interwoven pitches let out a neigh like a white horse racing into the night, bringing the news of defeat to all of Morokoshi. The silk strings rung a crisp resonance against the horse-haired bow.

"It's pretty."

The hum stopped. Kano opened her eyes to the abrupt cut-off, and turned around. Ka Shin'u had the erhu in his lap. The body of the instrument was made of bamboo, painted a deep black. He had a surprised expression.

"Ah-" Ka Shin'u fell backwards, barely catching the instrument and bow. "I thought you were asleep?..."

"For someone who wants to get out, that's quite the digression," She gave a little smug smile.

"I can't help it... I always play it to calm myself," He delicately placed the erhu back in the case.

"If I said the erhu is a worthless instrument... what would you say?"

Ka Shin'u's eyes sharpened at those words. He gripped the case handle tightly, while Kano looked intently at him.

"You're right," He stared at the floor, running his fingers down the case. "I would say that you're right. The erhu is an outdated instrument. Not many in Shiyan- Morokoshi plays it anymore."

"That's a lie."

"..."

"Tell me, Shin'u," She walked towards him, while he lay sitting. "Tell me what you really feel."

He stood up, "You're just a kid. People of your generation don't worry about how other people feel."

"Is that right? But I'm a bit interested in my short attention span. So tell me, what if I told you that the erhu is an outdated instrument?"

Ka Shin'u's fingers trembled, while he struggled to put words together. He clenched onto the neck of the erhu, protective for its safety. Nervous sweat trickled down his face.

"The erhu is not an outdated instrument... It's a timeless device passed down from generation to generation."

Kano put her hand on his shoulder while smiling, "Good job. Well, good night."

"Wait," He called out, his voice exasperated. "What's your deal? Carefree, yet pretentious?"

She sat down on the seat and folded her legs. Kano was really tired, but she still forced herself to answer. She sighed before speaking, not wanting to remember those days.

"I'm just a high school student. There's nothing to learn from me."
