Chapter 3: 3

The train ran downhill at a slight angle. Shin'u bumped his head on the side, which he let out an audible ache. By the time he woke up, the front passageway door swung open. Only an arm stretch away from falling. By the time he came to his senses, Shin'u searched himself. Kano knew what it was.

"My-"

"Relax, Shin'u, I got it," She raised the case which was caught in her arm. It had slipped from his hands before the dip, so Kano kept it with her. Shin'u hesitantly took it.

"Why are you on a first name basis?" He questioned, shutting the open door. Nobody could fathom what would happen if someone fell out of the train. "And uh, thank you for saving the erhu."

"How about we practice saying each other's given name?" Kano suggested, answering his question with another. "Shin'u."

"Ka-"

"Okay, you lose."

"What? Since when was this a game? And how did I lose?"

Kano responded lazily, "Kidding, kidding. To answer your question, a bond is like a string. When you get along with someone, both of your strings entangle and tie with each other," She motioned her hands together, "But when you distance yourself from them, the strings get pulled apart," Then she actioned her hands as if pulling a string, "And if you distance yourself too far... The bond between the both snaps."

"So we're so entangled that you call me by my given name?"

"Mhm."

"I don't quite get it," Shin'u scratched his head, "If you're so trusting, then help me find a way out."

The idea of returning to the normal world. She thought about it. It was the first time she had talked to someone in so long. She remembered how bad it was to talk to someone. Kano clenched her chest, but saved face. Her condition stabilized faster than what Shin'u could read.

The passenger car rushed downhill, downward like a bullet. The two latched themselves onto the train's grab handles. The doors swayed violently. Shin'u glanced through the open door.

"That's..."

They were speeding towards a stationary train car. The two trains slammed into each other at full. The other passenger car strutted further along the tracks. Hissing metal pierced their ears.

"Ow... Did you just use me as a cushion?"

Shin'u was under her as Kano stood up. Observing the surroundings, the windows were cracked, some shattered. The passageway door had been reduced to scrap. She had never seen anything like this before.

"There's a person!" Shin'u peeked from the open entrance. There was an older man, lay dazed in the next cart. It creaked as it began to loosen off the tracks. "His train is going to fall!-"

"Hold on to your erhu," Kano put it in his arms. She delicately stepped into the twisted car, the floor moving like a seesaw. She waited for it to level, before taking another step. The man finally returned to his senses, and began to panic, shaking the entire compartment. Kano quickly moved towards him. Then she felt the ground slide before her.

"Run!"

Kano assisted the man as they raced towards the original train. They were separated from the open entrance by leaps away. She shoved the man forward onto the train as he began to plunge. She closed her eyes while she felt gravity pull her downward. She felt fear. Then her arm got yanked, as someone latched onto her wrist. Dangling by a thread.

Shin'u caught her wrist as the derailed car fell into the azure abyss. He huffed and puffed and slowly brought her up. Kano could place her feet on the rails, while she dared not to look down. With one heavy pull Shin'u lifted her into the train car. They collapsed onto the floor. Drenched in sweat and anxiousness, Kano raised her head. As she parted her hair to see, she searched for the man. He was standing on the edge of the train. She locked eyes with him, and saw his eyes. He wore a black suit and tie, while standing there petrified. It was the second person she had seen since entering the blue dimension.

"What do you see with those eyes?..." Kano whispered, not knowing who it was addressed to.
