Chapter 5: Mana Manipulation, Part 2

"Beginner's Guide for aspiring mages."

This was the first book I picked up when I entered mum's library. I knew that there would be a lot of books on magic, but this was the only one that caught my eye.

It took exactly 6 months for me to learn the language of this world. Having a baby's brain was really helpful. I think the written is a combination of Chinese and Latin. Even though it looks like a simplified writing system, its grammatical structure is very complicated. It's more difficult than Japanese or English. But I'm not gonna complain since I learned to read it in just half a year!

Now I don't know much about babies, but I'm pretty babies in this world, but grow faster than regular human not they exist in this world. That's why I think the grammar in this book is really simple compared to other language. And the fact that it uses both Roman and Chinese characters makes it look even easier.

The first chapter starts with an introduction of mana and mana manipulation. Mana is what we call "energy". Our Drakyn body produces energy by burning food. For example, if you eat 100 calories per day, then in 10 days you will have burned 500 calories. This is called metabolism.

After going through all the stuff about magic and basic spells like fireballs, lightning bolts and so on, the book introduces the concept of mana and how it can be manipulated.

According to the author, Mana is the universal source of life.

"While the power of mana is largely genetic, there are many cases where children powerful mages and warriors unable to sense the mana around them. Mana is also supernatural force that occurs regularly in everyday life, used as tools and bought and sold all over the world. It is also the main form of art or combat utilized by Mages. Mana is essential to even the most basic spell. Through various methods, the most common of which is an incantation, can be controlled and manipulated to create an effect that would not be possible otherwise, such as walking on water, exhaling fire, or creating illusions. Mana is ordinarily not visible to the unaided eye unless it is highly concentrated or manifested in large amounts. Though Magic goes beyond reason, it is still born of reason and it takes an enormous amount of concentration and mental ability to use it. One's magical powers are also tied to one's life force. Only ten percent of the world's population is able to use Magic, which is noted to keep a balance between ordinary people and those with Magic. The average lifespan for a person using magic is alott longer than that of their normal counterparts. It should also be noted that while most people who use the Art of Magic are people of good heart, some are not."

"In short, mana is the base of your magic ability. Each type of mana has certain characteristics that make it unique among others. In order for a mage to begin learning their craft, they must first learn to master the mana within themselves. A recent census going back 100 years proved that only 1 in 100 children are able to sense mana, but to the extent of which could only be tested when their mana core (the heart) first competed-- anywhere from their adolescence to late teens. It's when the body of a Drakyn, Gon, Elezen, and Trow start to develop their chakra paths. Chakras are found in a series of points throughout the body where Mana is heavily concentrated (the heart) and spreads it to the body. There are four chakras in total, all located on a central vertical axis."

"The mage's goal is to activate the chakra paths in the heart, then open their spiritual sight to see the mana around them. Once this is accomplished, they will be able to manipulate the mana in the surrounding area. Each chakra has a specific purpose and deals with a different type of emotion. As such, each one can be opened and closed depending on the individual's state of mind. When a chakra is open, energy is free to flow about the body, where as a sealed chakra restricts this flow of energy. The chakras must be opened in a specific order, or the energy will not be able to flow properly. Once a mage has mastered opening the chakras, they are ready to begin controlling and manipulating the mana in the area. If one were to attempt to control mana without having fully activated the chakras, they would feel a strong pain in their chest. "

"There are four types of Mana in the body. These include: Earth, Fire, Water and Wind. Each one differs slightly from the last. As descendants of the ancient and now extinct dragons. We possess a magic powered bloodline known as 'Dragon's Blood'. Dragon's blood possesses a special property that allows us to access the mana that exists within the earth itself."

"Mana Nature Transformation is transformation the regular mana into one of the four types of nature. In general, every person's mana has an affinity towards one of the four basic nature transformations.

Affinity can at times be genetic, or at least common to a particular family; most members of the Huang-Chan clan (the royal family of the Land of Fire) have an affinity towards the Fire nature. Mages have an easier time learning to create and control a mana nature that matches their affinity, although even then it may take a number of years."

"A mage's primary method of controlling and manipulating mana is through incantations. An incantation is a sequence of words said in an ordered manner to produce a result. Incantation is a term used to refer to the combination of words and gestures that creates a desired effect with mana. Incantations are divided into two categories. Simple incantation is an incantation that can be used as soon as mastered. Advanced incantation requires a bit more thought and time to complete before it is usable."

Flipping through the pages I stopped something more interesting. Mana is utilized in many ways. "The most common is: enhancement of the boy with mana (warrior), and emission of mana to the outside world (caster/mage)... This is determined by birth."

Weakness and Limitations

"Wile warriors can perform enhanced enhancement through training and practice. They have the limitation of being proficient at close-range combat only, and usually having a hard time dealing with ranged foes. Warriors are also proficient at using short-range Barrier Magic capable of protecting themselves and the people around in the immediate vicinity, along with Detection Magic used for scouting with high accuracy. They are also able to utilize mana and conserve stamina more proficiently than the other caster users, because their mana nature being battle oriented. Because Warriors are proficient only in close-range combat, their ideal weapon is something like a Sword, and usually learns Swordsmanship to boost their combat abilities.

"Casters on the other hand, can use any type of mana and can enhance it in a variety of manners. However the lack of affinity makes it a difficult skill to master and requires a lot of time to perfect. Caster tends to have better accuracy, but slower reaction time, making them less effective in situations of quick changes in battle. Their weapons are usually long-ranged and heavy, like a Bow. A good example is the Blaster class. While hard to train at first, but once a caster trains enough, then can pretty much turn into a heavy magical artillery. Though generally it has a slow firing - rate and limited ability to handle big groups of opponents, but it makes up for that by using high-powered spells which has the ability to easily decimate the target."

"While both types of Mages, or Manaipulators, for the more scientifically accurate term, depend on and are categorized by their dragon features. The major differences between the two classes are that Warriors rely on brute strength and speed, while Mages focus on intellect and skill. In addition, when a Mage uses magic to enhance his own body, he does so by transforming the mana in his body into a different type of mana."

"As the proficiency level rises, the distinction between the two becomes clearer. As a general rule, higher level spells require more mana, whereas lower-level spells require less. The potency of a spell is determined by the type of mana used. A high quality mana will result in a more potent spell than low quality mana.

Hmm.. So my father seems to be a really high level warrior then. The amount of tree and the sheer size of them is overwhelming. I wonder how big they get?

Thinking of the time my mother used healing spells I wonder what she is. Going through the pages I found the page.

"There are few, rare deviants. The two most well-known types of deviants are the crusaders and the dragon-mage. Crusaders more commonly known as healers. Are those who use their physical strength and skill to fight or to protect others, possessing the rare ability to cast their unique restorative mana unto others, turning healing their allies. They are a common sight in large cities around the world, and are often employed by the army. Dragon-mages are those who use their mana to enhance their bodies in order to become stronger or faster. They use their mana to transform their body into a more shape-shifter-dragon-like beast, possessing similar abilities to the traditional dragons that exist in legends and fantasy stories. The most famous example of a dragon mage would be the great warlord Lord Garmon, who was known as the most powerful mage in all of history and the 1st Emperor in the land of Fire."

Ok, my mom is way healer no wonder she is such a badass! I learned a new word! Deviant. It means different, weird, abnormal, strange. Wow, my mom is kind of unique.

My next question is: Do I have any traits from the deviants?

"Lil' one there you are! Having problem with taking a poop?" My mother asked me while entering the room with her usual goofy grin. She looked tired. Her long hair was messy, the bed sheets were wrinkled, and she was wearing a robe. "Oh, my little one has found my secret stash again.

Mum! I'm trying to learn everything I can about mana here and start my journey to become the greatest mage in the world! Do not make out to be constipated infant!

She laughed seeing my pouting face and picking me up and gently placing me in her arms, I was still pouting.

"You are a cute one, aren't you? You remind me of your father!" She said. "You need a diaper change."

I can't wait until I'm able to form and words.
