Halo woke up in the middle of the night. His stomach was cramping, and it was excruciating. He forced himself up and walked over to the bathroom. Switching on the light, he walked to the toilet and as he passed the mirror; he saw that his yellow onesie was covered with his blood.

His heart dropped.

“Meo?” he called, but he didn’t even have a voice.

The tears started falling as he turned around and made his way to the living room to look for Romeo, but he wasn’t on the couch sleeping. He dropped to his knees and cried as he hugged his stomach.

He was in so much pain, and the blood can only mean one thing. He looked around the room for something, but what that something was; he didn’t know. He crawled up to the t.v and tried to lift himself up by the wall unit, but as much as he tried, nothing was working.

Frustrated and angry with himself, he tried again, but instead of grabbing the wall unit; he grabbed the t.v and, as he pulled himself up, the flat screen came falling down on him and the glass coffee table shattered.

Romeo was lying in Juliano’s room, holding him. They had had a heart to heart conversation, and he explained to his son that he was leaving. Juliano wasn’t happy and cried himself asleep.

Both Juliano and Romeo caught a fright when they heard the sound.

“What was that?” Juliano asked.

Romeo shook his head. “Stay here.”

He left and Juliano followed behind him, not listening to his father. Romeo switched on the passage light and on the floor was a trail of blood. The hairs on the back of his neck stood up.

He rushed following it and it led them to Halo, that was lying on the floor face down with a broken television on him.

“Daddy!” Juliano cried and rushed up to him, but Romeo pulled him out of the way, getting to Halo first. He moved the t.v out of the way, then pulled Halo out and called to him, but he wasn’t responding.

He picked him up and said, “Juliano, get your shoes and jackets for us. We’re going to the hospital.”

Juliano stood in one place, confused and frightened. He wanted to know what was happening and all of this shit was happening because Romeo was in their life.

They arrived at the hospital, and Dr Martin was already there waiting for them. He took Halo to the examination room while Juliano and Romeo waited outside patiently. Romeo also found it hard to comfort Juliano, while he needed someone to comfort him as well.

After about ten minutes in the examination room, Dr Martin came out to them. Romeo stood up worried and picked up Juliano. “How is he?”

Dr Martin wore a grave expression. “I don’t have enough time to explain. Halo had a miscarriage. Did you know he was pregnant?”

Romeo shook his head after his words registered.

Juliano nodded his head and said, “Yes, daddy was asking me if I want a brother or sister. When I asked why, he said he was going to have another one with daddy.”

Romeo frowned. Why didn’t Juliano tell him about this and what was Halo thinking? When he got this far into his thoughts, he recalled that night when he said he was giving Halo another child.

“You didn’t know about this?” Dr Martin asked him.

He shook his head. “No, Halo and I aren’t as close as we used to be.”

Dr Martin nodded his head. “The uterus inside him should have been discarded by his body not long after your son was born.”

“Why is that?” Romeo asked.

“Because it was artificial. In order for Halo to carry Juliano, we made sure that he could menstruate. We gave him hormone boosters and injected female chromosomes inside his body. Without those, his body wasn’t able to support the child growing inside and instead, it was killing him. Luckily, he has a strong immune build up as it fought against the infant and pushed it out,” he explained.

Romeo nodded his head. “Please do everything you can to save Halo. He lost too much blood.”

Dr Martin assured him and left to perform the surgery.

Romeo sighed as he sat back down and closed his eyes, hugging Juliano from behind.

“Daddy?” He called.

“Mn?” Romeo answered, surprised. It was the first time that he called him that and as much as he wanted to be happy, his worry overshadowed it.

“Is daddy going to be okay?” He asked.

Sitting up properly, he turned Juliano to face him and said, “Dr Martin is a good doctor. He helped bring you into this world so I know he knows what he is doing, so Halo will be fine.”

“And what about my sister?” He asked.

Romeo looked at him confused but answered, “The doctor can’t save her. She died at home.”

Juliano started tearing up again. He didn’t know that concept of death yet, but the confusion was scaring him.

*

Juliano had fallen asleep before Halo was brought out of surgery.

Romeo stared at Halo, who looked pale. He had so many needles in his arms and the amount of blood his body was consuming wasn’t a joke.

He was slowly falling asleep with Juliano in his arms when Halo opened his eyes.

He looked around the room and when he saw his son and Romeo sitting there uncomfortably; he frowned. He tried to sit up, but then saw that he had drip bag attached to him and the blood transfusion.

Halo paused for a moment, trying to recall how he got here but couldn’t remember a thing. His body was also in so much pain, but why and how did he get here?

“Meo?” He called and choked.

Romeo only woke up because he heard him coughing. He looked at Halo and quickly sat up. He was about to say something, but Halo shook his head and looked at Juliano.

He didn’t want Romeo’s loud mouth to wake him up. Catching his hits, he got up quietly and went to lay Juliano down on the couch behind him. Sitting on the bed, he asked, “How are you feeling? You had us worried.”

Halo shook his head. “What happened?”

“I should ask you that. We heard a crash, and we found you bleeding on the floor with the t.v on top of you,” he explained.

Halo thought about it. He tried hard to remember what happened, but his head hurt.

“Forget it,” Romeo said as he sat down. Looking at Halo, he asked, “When were you going to tell me you were pregnant or were you going to run away with my child again?”

When Halo heard him, all the memories came back, and he looked at his stomach. He started touching it and asked, “Is is my baby okay?”

“You lost it,” Romeo said.

“What? Why?” Halo asked and burst into tears.

Romeo slammed his fist on the armrest and growled, “Stop your fucking crying and answer my damn question.”

Halo stopped crying and stared at him. After a moment, he asked, “How can you be so cruel? I just lost our baby.”

Romeo moved from the chair to the bed and he asked, “When were you going to tell me?’

Halo pushed him away just before he got into his face and said, “I wanted to be sure first but instead of staying, you fucking told me you are leaving! I know I fucked up in the past and so did you, but how do you expect me to tell you I’m pregnant when you don’t want me? Would you even want our child and don’t lie to me? I know you and the first thing you’d ask is if the child is yours!”
