Romeo sighed and explained, “Things were good between Nicola and I until I noticed she liked fucking too much. When I first threatened to leave her, she told me everything. At least I thought it was everything.”

He stared at Anthony cautiously as he continued, “As you know, my other identity…”

Anthony raised a brow, and a smirk formed on the corner of his lips.

“There are certain rules and tests I needed to follow, and one test resulted in an evaluation error. My boss asked me about this and I had no clue and upon doing further investigation, they found out that it’s a certain drug that comes with an antidote,” he said, confusing Anthony.

“He was killing them?” He asked.

Romeo shook his head, “No, more like a… if you leave, you’ll die. If you tell you die and so forth. I confronted Nicola about it and she told me. I left her with the occasional fuck when I wanted, but it was not life threatening.”

“So, what are you saying?” He asked.

“I can only suspect that he has my child. I can’t contact any of my people to confirm it because of all the surrounding police,” he said.

Anthony stared at him. “And you are telling me this because?”

“Because I need you to stall Halo,” he said.

Anthony shook his head. “Halo and I aren’t close anymore and you know it.”

“I know, but I don’t want him to know that I know where Juliano is,” he said.

Anthony sighed, “Listen, I’m getting too old for this shit and I just want to raise my son in peace. Tell Halo what you told me and go get your son. Don’t be a coward because Halo might hate you after this.”

Romeo was suspicious. “I thought you would have been happy about this?”

“I would have been eight years ago, but I’m not trying to get myself killed. Antonio needs me and he only has me, so I can’t get myself killed because of your black ass,” he said.

Romeo walked back into the office and saw that Halo was still crying. He walked up to him and knelt down. Looking at Halo, he said, “Juliano will be okay.”

“Meo, I want my baby back,” Halo mumbled.

Romeo kissed him on the lips. Looking into his eyes he said, “I’m sorry Halo, you were right, this has something to do with me.”

“What do you mean?” Halo asked.

Romeo sighed and said, “I only suspected it at first, but it’s been confirmed by my connects. The person who has Juliano is Nicola’s father.”

Halo moved back and stared at him. The image of Nicola appeared in his head and so did her obituary that had many dedications from her family members and their friends.

Focussing his attention on him, he said, “Go fetch my son and I don’t want to hear from you until he is safe in your arms.”

Romeo looked back into Halo’s determined eyes, then nodded. He stood up and said, “I’ll be back. Make up a good excuse.”

Halo nodded his head saying nothing and Romeo disappeared.

The detective in charge walked into the office and found Halo asleep in the chair. He looked around for Romeo and asked the person guarding the door where he went. The man didn’t even know Romeo had disappeared; all he recalled was his return.

He woke Halo up, who wasn’t happy to be woken.

“Where is your husband?” The detective asked.

Halo looked around confused then said as he fixed himself, “I don’t know.”

“What do you mean, you don’t know?” He asked, confused.

Looking at him, Halo said, “My husband and I are only together for our son so even if we want to comfort each other, we can’t. You saw how I was crying alone and he didn’t hold me, right? Well, he is the same as me. Romeo junior means the world to us and I am sure he is crying in some corner—just let it be. Is there any news about my son?”

He sighed. “I was hoping to tell you both. We sent over a squad to Ms Steward’s residence, but the house was empty. The house was just in her name and the real estate agent who sold it to her did not know that she had not moved in there. The neighbours that my men spoke to said they had only seen her once or twice with a man.”

“So you don’t know where my child is?” Halo asked as he stood up.

The detective looked at him apologetically. “Mr Washington, we are doing our best to find your son.”

Halo stared at him with nothing to say. It was obvious their best wasn’t enough seeing as Romeo should already be holding their son in his arms.

Three days later…

Halo and Romeo rushed into the hospital room Juliano was kept in. Juliano was lying on his side fast asleep with a doctor and three nurses by the bed.

They looked over and the nurses looked at them with sympathy.

“Dr, my son,” Halo said.

The doctor gazed at the couple, then looked down at Halo because Romeo looked terrifying. “He is asleep for now. Do you mind it if we take this to my office?”

Halo shook his head. “No, I am not going anywhere.”

He sighed, then looked at the nurses signally with his eyes for them to leave. After they left, he asked them to sit in chairs.

Looking at them, he said, “I understand that your son was kidnapped yesterday and found an hour ago. The police are still investigating and thus we cannot send him home with you until there is an official statement from the police and the social worker on Romeo’s case.”

“Yes, the detective told us,” Halo said.

The doctor took in a deep breath and said, “Because Romeo was found with only a shirt on and had bruises all over his body, we did a full body examination and that is why it took us so long to let you see him.”

Halo grew agitated, whereas Romeo didn’t want to hear anything. He had tears already swimming in his eyes and was hoping to tune out any bad news.

“Your son… he was… he was violated more than I’ve seen on a child in my career,” he said and looked away from Halo as Halo’s heart sank to his stomach and his eyes lost colour.

“I got your son to speak, and he told me what happened and they all connect with the wounds on his body,” he added.

He got the courage to look at them and said, “I have arranged for Romeo to receive counselling once he can walk again and I suggest ‌you receive counselling on how to deal with this situation as a family.”

He walked over to them and handed Romeo pamphlets they could read about living with abused family members, where to get counselling and why they needed counselling.

The doctor left them after saying that he’ll be back in an hour to check in on Juliano.

The pamphlets in his hand dropped to the floor, and he leaned forward putting his face in his hands. Romeo’s shoulders started shaking and soon the silent room filled with Romeo crying.

Halo slowly turned to look at Romeo and placed his hands on his shoulders. He rubbed Romeo’s back, trying to comfort him, and slowly leaned over. As his head was bouncing while he looked at Juliano, his tears started falling.

He was so sick of it; hiding, being nice, getting walked all over and doing what others accepted as social norms. Look where it got him?

Things were just getting better for him and Romeo and now this?

Who is it that didn’t want them to be happy?
