“Hey, Kakashi, you're late again!”
“Hi, Gai. Sorry, I was helping…”
“An old woman?” Gai interrupted him.
Kakashi didn't answer.
“Kakashi, let’s fight! It's been a while. I’ve developed some killer techniques you would…”
“Do you know that boy?” Kakashi then interrupted him, showing Gai a dark-haired boy coming out of the Konoha Police.
The little boy met Kakashi's gaze but didn't seem to pay much attention to it.
It's the kid from the other day, Kakashi thought.
“Hey, Gai, are kids joining the Police now?”
“You don’t know?” Gai wondered. “His father, the Chief of Police, is temporarily imprisoned there, awaiting his death sentence tomorrow.”
"So the rumors were true? Fugaku Uchiha is actually convicted of murder?!”
Kakashi saw an individual walk past the boy.
"Isn’t he…"
“His face looks familiar,” Gai admitted.
Little Itachi has grown up well. Jiraiya said to himself as he saw the boy.
The Sannin entered the Police building.
The next morning, a crowd was assembled in the main square. People were whispering.
It was hard to tell what the general feeling was. Was it sadness? Rage? Shame? Fear? Or perhaps, relief, or even an unhealthy excitement?
In the center of this compact crowd was a platform on which stood the Fugaku, surrounded by an ANBU squad.
Jiraiya was present, leaning against a pole. He sighed as he watched with sadness the people gathered around the Uchiha. Fugaku still had a few minutes left before his sentence.
The Sannin was astonished to see the young Itachi standing apart from the crowd. He walked toward him. It was not a show for a five years old boy, and even more so if he was the Fugaku’s son.
As he approached, he noticed that the boy was holding a baby in his arms.
Mikoto... So here is your second son. The Sannin thought.
However, while he was looking for an excuse to convince Itachi to leave, he saw the young boy turn around on his own.
“Let's go, Sasuke. You must not see this. It's the price father paid to protect you from war.”
Jiraiya was speechless. How can a five-year-old boy say such a thing when his father is going to be executed? Jiraiya was amazed by the boy’s maturity.
A tear rolled down Itachi's cheek and fell on Sasuke as he left the place.
Kushina was at home, taking care of her baby.
“Naruto... My son, one day you will become big and strong, like your dad. Naruto, I'm ashamed of everything that happened. If I had been strong enough, I could have protected you. If I had been strong like your dad, there wouldn’t have been a problem…”
She frowned.
“Your... Your dad is always too nice! He never blames me,” she added, tears in her eyes. “He always forgives me, but I can't take it anymore, I'm not good enough…”
She wiped her eyes.
“I have to become stronger. I owe it to you, Naruto, and to your dad. I must be able to protect you... Both of you! And it turns out that I have, within me, a power capable of surpassing the Hokage... A power that I must master.”
Kushina heard a thunderous laugh within her.
“Control me, me?” Kyubi said contemptuously. “How arrogant…”
Kushina frowned and ignored him.

“I will move mountains for you, Naruto.”
“I will crush these mountains and all of you!” Kyubi growled.
Kushina was tired.
“Shut up!”
“Kushina, if you want to use my power, you will have to loosen the seal,” Kyubi sneered.
“I know! And I’m willing to take the risk, ya know!”
“Mito Uzumaki took that risk. I’m looking forward to the Uzumaki sequel…”
“What do you mean?” Kushina wondered, half suspicious, half surprised.
“She believed, like you, that a simple human could control my hatred... But you are weak, pathetically weak. How can you hope to dominate me, when you cannot control yourself? I warn you, Kushina, I will exploit any weakness.”
“If you're thinking about childbirth, you will be disappointed. I don't intend to have more! One is enough for me. With Minato, we can never have another child. Sorry Kyubi, but you won't have another chance!”
Kyubi laughed, which sent chills down Kushina's spine.
“You will bend. You are only human. After the death of Hashirama Senju, in suffering, Mito Uzumaki only resisted for a while because of the seal on her forehead, a condensed form of her chakra which blocked mine.”
Kushina was listening attentively, intrigued. She had indeed noticed this seal, during her meeting with Mito.
“But in the end, with or without chakra, she could not hold me forever! When her grandson died, her suffering was too great and she abandoned herself to my hatred. I was going to destroy everything, but…! Kyubi yelled as these memories were making him angry.
Kushina, for the first time in her life, was unable to speak. The Nine-Tails had implied it was able to free itself. But was it true? Was Kyubi telling her a lie, to keep her from trying to control its power?
And why? Why had no one told her about it? Why had people only talked about Mito's difficult delivery? And, if Kyubi had taken control... How on earth could Mito have been its Jinchuriki at the end of her life? And above all, what meaning could Mito's words to Kushina have?
In the end, we were brought here to become the receptacles of Kyubi… Kushina remembered. But before the beast can take shelter... The host must be filled with love.
“You lie!” Kushina then shouted. “Mito was your Jinchuriki until the end!”
“She became it again for a reason that I don't know,” Kyubi growled.
Kushina had never seen the Nine-Tails so talkative. She was more than ever afraid of this demon locked inside her.
“Aren't you surprised that Mito died of old age so young, for an Uzumaki?”
Kushina had to concede that point to Kyubi. It was indeed weird. The longevity and life force of the Uzumakis have always been considered superhuman. When she passed away, Mito wasn’t so old for an Uzumaki.
Kushina was brought back to reality by Naruto's cries. Without thinking, she resumed rocking him, which had the immediate effect of calming him down.
That stinky fox is just afraid that I'll try to control him. She thought angrily.
She didn't have time to really think about it more as Minato had just arrived home. As expected, he looked disappointed. It seemed the village really went through with the execution.
Kushina set Naruto on the bed and went to hug her husband. She didn’t know what to say. She wasn’t very good with such situations. She knew that Minato had never been close to Fugaku, but his death was still a terrible injustice.
“He's gone…”
“Yes,” Kushina answered in a calm and steady voice, giving her an unnaturally wise look.
“A team led by Danzo is looking for him.”
Kushina frowned.
“What are you talking about?! Why are they looking for a dead person?
“What?”
Kushina didn't understand Minato's reaction.
“What do you mean by they’re looking for him?”
“Fugaku is gone. He disappeared before our eyes.”
