Chapter 31: Chapter 30 – Lie

“You are committing a serious mistake,” Hiashi said in a low voice.

“Minato isn't himself anymore,” Homura replied. “We do not have a choice.”

“The village has lost its jinchuriki,” Hiashi continued. “Minato is the strongest Shinobi in Konoha, and we know that threats are lurking outside. Without Minato, the next to die will be civilians!”

Minato glanced at Hiashi. To see him come to his defense like that was unexpected, but the Yondaime was glad. Danzo took a step towards Minato.

“Not one more step,” Minato threatened.

“What are you going to do? Face us all? You will be facing the Uchiha clan, ANBUs, members of the Root, the Sandaime Hokage, the two advisers, myself... And Hiashi Hyuga.”

Minato didn't answer.

"Or do you want to run away?" he added in a tone full of contempt.

There was a movement among the Uchiha. The memory of Fugaku escaping was still fresh in their mind, and Danzo's remark did not please the Uchihas. But Shisui stepped forward to prevent any further trouble.

"I'll take care of him," Shisui said. “I'm the Chief of the Police. The role of escorting Minato falls to me.”

Shisui took Minato's arm and led him outside. Leaving the crowded room, they found themselves in front of a few ANBUs, waiting in the hallway.

“Wait,” one of them said.

He stepped forward and put his hands on Minato's chest. The latter did not move. He simply looked at the ANBU that he recognized, despite his mask.

"This is a complex seal designed to prevent you from using the Hiraishin, Minato," Hiruzen said wearily.

“How long will it last?”

“As long as it takes,” Danzo replied coldly.

The ANBU retreated and stood alongside their squad leader, another ANBU also well known to Minato.

“What about Naruto?” Minato asked.

“I'll take care of him,” a voice said in the hallway.

It was Mikoto. Minato recognized her voice. But from where he was, he could only see her silhouette, leaning against a wall. He couldn't make out the expression on her face.

“Mikoto…”

But she was already gone. Minato was suddenly ashamed, terribly ashamed thinking of his son. Suddenly, Shisui stopped.

“Transform yourself. It would be wise to avoid being seen in such a position by the villagers.”

Minato transformed into a man with red hair.

“Original,” Shisui pointed out.

They walked through the village, passing through crowded streets. Seeing the glares people gave him, he was glad that he was able to change his appearance. They finally arrived at the police station. Minato was then placed in a cell, the same one Fugaku had once occupied while awaiting his trial.

Minato sat down on the ground, crossed his legs, and waited.

“Naruto?” Mikoto said in a soft voice. “Naruto, open up the door, please.”

“Dad told me not to let strangers inside…”

“So I'm a stranger now?”

“I... I don't know, but if he finds out that I opened the door to someone, he'll kill me when he comes back.”

"He won't, Naruto," Mikoto replied. “Your father is on a mission,” she added immediately.

“On a mission? Dad?”

“Yes, it is a very special mission only he could take care of. It's about your mom, Naruto.”

The door opened. Mikoto sighed as she entered briskly and closed the door behind her.

“Is it about Mom?”

“Yes, her condition is not completely stable yet, and…”

“What? But... I thought the lady with the big boobs was going to heal her.”

“Don't worry, Naruto. She'll be okay, she's just really tired and your dad has to help her.”

Naruto sighed.

“And how long will his mission last?”

“I do not know.”

“And what does it consist of?”

“It's top secret, Naruto!”

“I want to help him!”

“And you can help by coming with me. You will live with me until he comes back. It was his wish.”

"Live with Sasuke?"

Suddenly, Naruto's expression changed. He seemed to be in deep thought.

"Wait... " Naruto said suspiciously. “Why didn't he come and tell me that himself?”

“I told you; he's on a mission.”

"And he took nothing? He left straight away, taking nothing, not even his personal kunai stash…”

Mikoto did not answer. Suddenly, a devious smile appeared on her face, and she activated her Sharingan.

“You have a sharp mind, Naruto... “ she whispered in a worrying voice, advancing slowly toward the boy. “You should listen to your father... You should have never opened the door…”

The boy stepped back in fear, but his back quickly touched the wall behind him, and he collapsed on the ground, shaking all over his body.

“And now you're going to die…”

Mikoto towered above Naruto. She seemed to have gone mad. Her eyes were terrifying and her smile ever crueler.

Then her face suddenly changed.

“I'm kidding,” she said in an amused tone. “Well, unless you decide to disobey me!”

Naruto swallowed his saliva.

“Come on, stand up, little one.”

Naruto stood up, his legs still shaking. Regaining control of himself, a slight smile appeared on his face.

“Why are you smiling?” Mikoto wondered.

“It's that... For a moment... You reminded me of mom…” Naruto whispered.

Mikoto smiled and hugged Naruto.

“Don't worry, Naruto. Your mom will be better soon…”

Tears started to flow from Naruto's eyes.

“I... I shouldn't cry but…”

“Why shouldn't you cry?” Mikoto wondered.

“A ninja does not cry…”

“You're not a ninja yet,” Mikoto corrected. “You are not subject to these rules yet.”

“But…”

“And neither am I,” Mikoto added weakly, a tear running down her cheek.

Minato hadn't moved an inch all evening. He was still sitting in the same position when Shisui entered.

"Here's your meal," the Uchiha told him, putting a tray on the floor. “It’s your son’s favorite, Ramen from Ichiraku!”

“Thank you, Shisui,” Minato replied calmly.

Shisui put a second tray on the floor.

“Can I stay?” he asked.

Minato nodded.

“Good, I'm starving. Besides, since no one else is allowed in here, you might as well enjoy my company!”

“You want to talk, don't you?”

“Always straight to the point, Yondaime Hokage... In that case, I will do the same. Yes, I want to talk.”

He paused, taking a bite of ramen.

“It's about Mikoto. Something has changed in her.”

“What do you mean?”

“I think you know very well what I mean.”

Minato also ate some ramen.

"It will remain a secret, of course," Shisui added.

Minato said nothing and just kept eating

“But all I can say is that it's not common... The rare Uchiha who have done so have been the agents of great change.”

Shisui paused again to eat.

“Mikoto Uchiha... Since that day, I feel it... For better or for worse, she will impact the world…”

Minato finished his meal.

“You're very quiet, Minato…”

“I don't speak with my mouth full.”

Naruto was waiting for Mikoto in front of the house.

“What are you doing?”

“Bathroom,” Mikoto replied. “It won’t take long.”

Naruto grew impatient.

“Hurry up, or I'll lock you inside the house!”

“Yes, yes, I'm coming!”

Naruto, however, heard footsteps in the house, going from one room to another, stopping, then resuming. Finally, Mikoto joined Naruto outside.

“I heard you walking through the house…” Naruto said suspiciously, locking the door.

“Yes, I searched all the rooms because I'm a thief,” Mikoto answered with a wink.

Naruto laughed, hands behind his head.

Nothing beats the truth, Mikoto thought, seeing that Naruto didn't believe her at all.

“And what were you looking for?” he asked, jokingly. “Wait, let me guess: the secret of the Rasengan!”

“Oh, no, it’s something much better than that…” answered Mikoto, smiling mysteriously.

Naruto burst out laughing and said nothing.
