The meeting was postponed with the Queen, and the following week passed by in a blur as Lord Lachlan put me through my paces, testing my reflexes, speed, and stamina on a daily basis. I quickly learned that he was an expert in all forms of combat, and he proved to be a very demanding teacher.

However, I found that I didn't mind the hard work because it was also exhilarating. There was something about pushing myself to my limits and succeeding that made me feel more alive than I ever had before.

Lord Lachlan never went easy on me, but he did praise me when I did well, which only made me want to work harder so that I could please him. It wasn't long before we developed a kind of rhythm where we would banter back and forth while we fought or trained, which helped make the time pass more quickly.

I had never felt this way before around anyone else - so comfortable and at ease - but with Lord Lachlan, it felt natural somehow, like we had known each other for years instead of just weeks.

Eventually, the day came when Queen Melodious called us into her chambers for what she said was an important announcement regarding my training as her Hunter. My heart beat faster in anticipation as Lord Lachlan, and I entered the room side by side with our arms linked together casually like two old friends instead of teacher and student.

Suddenly there was movement from the corner of my eye as someone stepped out from behind one of the large pillars lining the room silently until they were standing directly in front of us. My heart skipped a beat when Queen Melodious's face came into view because she looked even more beautiful up close than she did at a distance. Her blue eyes stared piercingly into mine for what felt like forever before finally flicking over toward Lord Lachlan, who met her gaze evenly without flinching.

Queen Melodious studied both our faces intently for several long moments without saying anything before finally breaking eye contact with us abruptly to look down at something glittering brightly in her hand. When she lifted her hand up towards us slowly, however, I realized that what she held wasn't some kind of jewel or trinket but rather a small metal object attached to a thin leather string. My eyes widened in realization even before Queen Melodious spoke again because there could be only one thing it could be.

"The Hunter's Mark," Queen Melodious said softly while holding out the metal object so that it dangled temptingly just out of reach above Lord Lachlan's head. "It is time."

"Yes, I think that the boy shows great promise, but if you expect him to become a great Hunter, you are going to have to set him loose at some point," Lord Lachlan said, and Melodious nodded.

"I know that you have been forced to sleep alone, but now that you are going to be going out, Fiona will be taking my place as your weapon. This part is special, so tonight you will join Fiona, and she will become contracted to you. Do not take this lightly. If the bond between the two of you is not filled with passion when the contract is made, she will not become an effective weapon," Melodious explained, and I just stood there frozen and not breathing, making Lord Lachlan burst out laughing.

"Mel, you really know how to lay it on the poor child!" Lord Lachlan barked out as he slapped his knee.

"What? What did I say?" Melodious asked, completely perplexed as to what she had done wrong, but then she, too, started laughing hysterically. "Oh my! I completely forgot how young he is!"

Still chuckling to themselves, the two of them walked over and patted me on the back reassuringly before turning and walking away from me, leaving me standing there feeling foolish and embarrassed. What the hell just happened?

"Wait!" I called, but when I turned around, Fiona was standing before me. She was not in her maid's outfit this time but wearing a tight-fitting dress made of some kind of shimmery material that caught the light and made her look like she was glowing. "What's going on?"

"Tonight you will join with Fiona, and she will become contracted to you," Melodious's voice echoed in my head as if she were right there beside me even though I knew that she was not.

I turned to look at Fiona, who stared back at me with an unreadable expression on her beautiful face. "What does that mean exactly?" I asked hesitantly, feeling a little apprehensive about what was about to happen even though I wasn't exactly sure what it was.

Fiona took a step closer to me before reaching up and placing her hands on either side of my face gently. "It means that we are going to be joined together for eternity, my love," she whispered softly before leaning in and pressing her lips against mine in a passionate kiss.

I felt a jolt of electricity run through my body the moment our lips made contact, and without even thinking about it, I wrapped my arms around Fiona's waist and pulled her closer to me as we deepened the kiss.

I could feel myself getting lost in her as our mouths moved together expertly, but just when I was about to give myself over completely, Fiona pulled away from me abruptly with a look of disappointment on her face.

"What's wrong?" I asked breathlessly, trying to catch my breath as I stared at her in confusion.

Fiona shook her head sadly before reaching up and tracing the outline of my lips softly with her fingertips for several long moments without saying anything. Finally, she heaved a sigh before turning away from me and walking back over toward where Queen Melodious stood, watching us intently with an unreadable expression on her face.

"I'm sorry, my Queen," Fiona said softly as she bowed her head in respect. "I thought that I could do it, but I can't. It's just not the same without the feelings being mutual."

"No, it is not," Melodious agreed with a nod of her head before turning to look at me. "Azriel, I am sorry to say this, but Fiona is right. The bond between Hunter and weapon must be one of mutual love and passion, or else it will never work."

My heart sank into my stomach at her words because I knew exactly what she was going to say next, even before she said it.

"I'm afraid that you are not ready yet, Azriel," Melodious continued regretfully while shaking her head slightly. "You must first know what you are lacking, and for that, neither Lachlan nor I can help you. If you can not, then you and I will never be able to join as well."

I had thought after all this training, that was going to be the end of it, and I would be able to go out and prove myself. Then I was blindsided but this, being told that I would have to have sex with a random woman that was basically a stranger that I had hardly even seen in passing.

How could they expect me to instantly be able to fall in love with this woman? There was no doubt that Fiona was beautiful, but that was not how love worked as far as I know, and to make that connection, there had to be some interaction.

"Fine, I get it, but then can I at least try and spend some time with Fiona? You all seemed to think that I can just turn on love and passion, but that isn't how it works, or at least not for me," I said, and the Queen smiled.

"Yes, I think that would be a good idea. Fiona can show you around town and introduce you to some of the eligible women," she said before turning towards Fiona with a raised eyebrow.

Fiona nodded eagerly before coming over and taking my hand in hers excitedly as if this was all part of some great plan instead of me just trying to find a way out so that maybe - just maybe - one of these women would take my fancy.

"Come on then, let's go!" Fiona said while tugging on my hand impatiently, and I allowed her to lead me out of the room, feeling completely defeated.
