"What's the situation?" - I asked the dark elf who was staring intently ahead of me.
The object of her interest was a locked gate leading to the residence of a wealthy aristocrat. He had a lot of money, so he had built himself a magnificent mansion. The building was more like a small palace than a house. Three stories, high windows, now hastily boarded up, and a massive wooden door, upholstered with wrought iron and floral patterns. The spacious courtyard was separated from the rest of the city by a three-meter stone fence.
In this, as in several other places, the men of the corrupt nobility were able to fight back and retreat to a shelter from which they could not simply be smoked out.
The reason I am here, on the other hand, is the name of the owner of the mansion. Sir John Mendeville is the person responsible for Chloe's misadventures when she was young. Unfortunately, the old man himself was not here. He was one of those who smelled trouble and found an excuse not to come to the capital. But he sent his youngest son, who was now hidden behind the strong walls of the house along with the guards.
:The rats are hiding in a hole and don't show their noses," - the woman answered as I approached, turning to face me. Her purple hair fluttered in the wind, framing her beautiful face. - "But we can't get them, either. We've taken the courtyard, but we can't go any farther."
Delva Celebrian has been waiting here for nearly an hour. And at the sight of me it was with marked difficulty that she refrained from throwing herself and hanging on the neck, snuggling her solid bust. Our relationship has undergone some changes since then... not without the help of a wonderful sorceress-let's not mention her name.
I sometimes get the feeling that she wants to build me a harem solely of women from her own people. I don't know why, but I try to pretend I'm stupid, and I don't notice her manipulations around me. Only with Delva there was a misfire. But I'd be a hypocrite if I said I was upset.
"I already see. Shooters at every window," - I noted as I shifted my view, seeing the men lurking near the windows, armed with bows and crossbows, judging by the thermal silhouettes. Seventeen men in all. But I don't think that's all of them; there must be others in the back of the building that my vision can't reach any farther.
"Those eyes of yours are a real cheat, you know?" - The woman snickered enviously. When she asked me why my eyes sometimes glowed, and I told her the reason, she grumbled for a long time, and then asked where I could get them. And I, realizing it was impossible, remembered the movie "Riddick" and retold his excuse verbatim. - "But you're not completely right. Two mages are their greatest advantage. Because of them, we can't even get close enough. Chloe's tearing and swearing. If we don't think of something fast, she'll go after them herself."
That could really happen. Chloe wasn't just licking her eyes with anticipation, waiting for Mendeville to come to Eldane. And how intense was her rage when it didn't happen. The girl could only take her revenge on his men and the son he'd sent in his place. And she will stop at nothing in her vengeance. When it comes to her former captors, Blondie begins to naturally fly off the handle and has little control over her actions.
"Kay!" - Speak of the devil. A shout from behind my back, the stomp of running feet, and a short but very firm hug marked the appearance of another of my dark elves. - Good thing you came, we can't get those bastards!
The little girl's voice echoed with impatience. She could barely contain herself.
"We'll get to the bottom of this. - i replied. - [Martha, is there a diagram of the building?]
[All for you, Carrier.] - At my word, a three-dimensional image of the Mendeville residence, modeled by Martha from the blueprints she'd managed to obtain, appeared before my eyes. I don't think the coincidence is a hundred percent, because the building was built twenty years ago, and the interior layout of the rooms may have changed, but it's generally acceptable.
After searching for a few seconds, I find a suitable place where it will be convenient to get inside. The only downside is that there's a bare wall. But, on the other hand, there are no windows there either, and no one will notice us making a mess in there.
Of course, it would be easier to simply break through the door - I have more than enough strength for that - and the assault party would come in after me, shielding themselves from the arrows. But shields don't help against mage spells, so it's not a good strategy unless we want to take unnecessary casualties.
After a few more seconds of deliberation, accelerated by the genetic engineering and magic of the Brain Tower, a plan of assault is formed in my head.

So we have fifty soldiers from Feoh controlling the courtyard of the mansion and surrounding the building on all sides. Plus ten dark elves from Delva's squad, including herself. The people of Feoh, thanks to Olga's actions during the battle and Celestine's speeches, have become much more tolerant of the dark elves, so the two squads can safely be in the same place. It's still a long way from complete trust, but the ice has cracked, so to speak, and they don't look at each other like a wolf.
There's also Chloe with the shotgun and I.
The wall at the site I found can be blown up: I still have some explosives and a detonator left. But we need to get there first, and for that we need a distraction.
"Captain!" - I summon the commander of the soldiers to me. - "We need to make some noise. I want you to look like you're going in for assault and disrupt the lines and shoot a little, but don't come any closer."
"Will do,"- the man nodded. Pretty young, by the way, no older than thirty. - "Anything else?"
"The assault should turn into a real one as soon as you get the signal."
"What signal?" - The captain clarified in surprise.
" You will not miss it," - I grinned back and, gesturing that he could be free, turned to the girls. - And you, as they begin, come with me.
Their dexterity and increased strength compared to humans, coupled with a good armor are well suited for indoor combat.
Preparations began. While people were gathering, I quickly checked my gear. A pistol with two magazines, both blades, two grenades, and a small load of explosives were all my gear for the moment. And it would have to be spent. It's a good thing I'll have a replacement soon, thanks to Klaus's efforts. It's worse, of course - and much worse - but it's a crawfish, so I don't have to worry about it.
A dozen minutes later everything was ready and the diversionary squad was in action. On the other side noticed our movements and gave a volley of arrows that did no harm to anyone. Ours fired back. And while the firefight gathered momentum, my group began to act.
"Let's go," - I commanded briefly, and I ran, taking the eleven dark elves with me. We rounded the corner of the building, pressed against the wall, and along it, unnoticed by the enemy, we reached the right point. As the blueprint indicated, there were no windows, and the place itself was a small cul-de-sac about two meters wide and deep.
"Take cover around the corner and wait for orders," - I pointed to the warriors, and they obeyed the order.
I myself was looking at the wall with my heat vision. There were three human silhouettes just opposite us. There must be servants in the mansion, but it wasn't them. The postures these guys are in indicate that they are preparing for battle.
Taking out an explosive packet, I quickly attach it to the wall just above my own head and set the timer for ten seconds, then turn around and run around the corner to avoid being hit by the blast.
" Get ready." - Hearing the command, the elves draw their weapons and get ready to throw. Chloe swayed impatiently on her toes, clutching the shotgun in her hands. Her eyes gave off a slight frenzy and the beastly excitement of a predator.
The one on the timer changed to zero, and the air was pierced with the thunder of an explosion. Chips of broken stonework and a puff of dust exploded from the cubicle, and someone screamed in pain from the hole in it.
"Move!" - I shouted sharply and was the first to rush out of my seat, noting from the corner of my ear how the captain's loud voice commanded me to launch a real assault.
