Chapter 2

Iridescent Fruit

As I bit into the food that was only as big as twice my thumb, the texture felt like biting into a cherry and a grape mixed together. 

'Mmmh...!'

Thick sweetness dived in my senses. It didn't irritate my throat with its sugary taste but I felt slightly rejuvenated.

Even if I were to be fully satiated, I could eat this fruit as a snack and still not feel bloated.

It's light on the stomach, delicious and refreshing 

The juice of the fruit was alkaline like water, it slid easily down my esophagus. Hence, washing away the strong presence of sweetness.

I was busy stuffing myself with the magical fruit, picking all that I could find and reach.

In time, the ripe fruits ran out. The branches extensively grew inside a cave. 

Sunlight was peeking through the cavern's entrance, perhaps the reason why the tree grew in that direction.

I reached for the purple goodness again, craving it desperately like a man's first gulp of fresh water in a desert. It was highly delightful and never enough until my body was reveling in satisfaction.

I crawled through the small opening. The fruit an arm's length from my extended arm, the object of my desire glowed with iridescence amidst the gloominess of the structure.

I positioned my left palm as a leverage against the ground until said ground disappeared.

Without resistance or a reaction fast enough to grab the branch (which was not thick enough to support my weight) or even scrape the walls with my nails too break the fall or something, I fell down the abyss.

I had a silver of mental strength, grabbing ahold of my consciousness to stay. A soft mysterious force cradled my injured head, (similar to the situation of my whole body) and a liquid without taste slipped through the gap of my mouth.

It trickled down my oh so ever thirsty throat and settled down in my stomach. Quite soon, a warm feeling formed in my core. It evolved into a spark and lit my whole body in a fiery fever.

Without knowledge of how much time passed, I opened my eyes.

I'm alive.

A giddy feeling welled up in my chest. It turned to excitement when I realized that no pain wrecked me.

I felt fine.

Better, even.

"Are you awake?" the voice of a boy asked.

With haste, I darted my eyes around the surroundings. I belatedly knew that I was lying on a smooth texture. It felt like the texture of a leaf. An unknown sweet scent lingered in the air but with another whiff, it was hard to differentiate again.

"Don't worry. I saved you from your sticky situation!" the voice cheerfully said.

"Who are you?"

It was still darkness all around me so I had a feeling of apprehension.

"I'm Morphie, that's what my friend calls me." he introduced himself.

I saw a shift of movement to my right but no matter how I na rrowed my eyes, I couldn't distinguish any remarkable feature.
