Chapter 97:

Transfer

St.Claire Hospital. A state-of-the-art facility that typically only the rich and powerful have access to. Located in New Eden, it was a marvel to look at. All of its facilities took up several city blocks, with the main building being roughly twenty stories tall.

It was located in the middle of what looked to be a park, as greenery surrounded the building and was also incorporated into the construction. It held several courtyards where patients could walk around and enjoy the flowers, fountains, and small streams that created a relaxing environment. Its walkways looked out into the park surrounding it, as well as into these courtyards.

It was a rather eco-friendly looking facility due to the greenery incorporated into it. Despite some of the buildings being separate from each other, walkways and bridges connected them. This created a continuous, yet labyrinthine structure.

All in all, it looked rather peaceful, and Jace could see why it was so exclusive. The entire place looked more like a resort than an actual hospital, but it was here that his mother would be treated. It was here his mother would be healed.

As the medical hovercraft began to descend, Jace's heart was finally beginning to calm down. He had held his mother's hand the entire trip, feeling her cold, fragile skin. He hoped to feel her warmth again soon.

The doctors with them began to prepare her to move, including Doctor Gerard who had been with them the entire time. Selene placed a comforting hand upon Jace's shoulder, with Liana and Kiera giving their support just by their presence. The ramp began to descend, and they were out and moving quickly inside.

The place smelled of nature, a refreshing scent. The pristine white and light brown of the hospital mixed beautifully with the green of the plants, along with the various colors of flowers. As they headed inside, Jace could feel the tranquility here.

Soft brown and white walls with soft lighting met his eyes. The floors were clean, white tiles. The hallways were wide as they moved quickly through the area. It wasn't crowded, and everything seemed in its place.

They passed by nurse station after nurse station and several reception desks. Jace barely registered any of it, he just followed.

"Patient's details?" One of the doctors inquired.

"Blood pressure's low, heartbeat unstable," Another answered as they began to administer treatment on the go.

"Brain function normal, though coma still persists," A third intoned, "Increase Aetherium Vitae intake. Monitor heart rate."

"Get me a beta block injector," The first doctor ordered.

Jace watched as they worked, his anxiety easing as they seemed to know what they were doing. Doctor Gerard was giving them the details they didn't have, explaining the treatment up until now, along with the doses of Aetherium Vitae they have been using up until now.

He was mesmerized with their work, but even more so was just impressed with their knowledge, professionalism, and genuine care they seemed to show in the patient. Jace wondered if they were acting this way because they genuinely cared for their patients or if it was because of who ordered it, if they even knew.

"Selene..." Jace spoke to her as they walked quickly, "Do they know who she is?"

"Yes," Selene responded with a nod, "They have their orders, but I understand you're worry."

Selene took his hand in hers, squeezing it reassuringly. He was definitely worried, as there was a difference between doctors just doing their jobs and doctors who actually cared.

"I vetted every single one of them," Selene told him confidently, "They're all good doctors who care about their patients and will do their job flawlessly. I assure you."

Selene paused for a moment, as if she was going to say something else, but chose not to.

"What is it?" Jace inquired, his anxiety rising again.

"Well..." Selene shifted as they walked, "I recruited another person who will be vital to your mother's recovery."

"...Who?" Jace wondered, glancing up at Selene, "You seem anxious..."

It had been a while since Jace had seen Selene look conflicted like she did in that moment. "Who could it be that makes her feel this way?" Jace was a bit worried for her now.

"Don't worry. I'm alright," She stated, glancing at him from the side, "Though, I am anxious. I've talked with her about this already, and she'll be under close watch. I promise you; nothing will happen to your mother."

"Selene..." Jace called her, trying to coax an answer out of her, "You're avoid the question."

"Heh, sorry..." Selene took a deep breath, "It's...my mother."

Jace's heart almost stopped in his chest as he stared at her with wide, surprised eyes. "Her mother?" It was the first time he was hearing about this, which caused his mind to go wild with assumptions and scenarios.

"Your...mother," Jace tried to calm his mind as he spoke, "How will your mother help?"

Selene glanced over at him, and then at Liana. After a moment, she spoke.

"My mother...is a Healer," Selene explained, causing both Liana and Jace to become even more shocked, "I didn't say anything before, because I wasn't sure if I would have her help. As you know, our relationship is...strained."

Jace could understand, and he wasn't mad. He was just surprised. Part of him was happy she was even talking to her mother. The other part was furious. He was reminded of how she had abandoned her and let Selene's father do whatever he wanted with her.

Yet, if Selene was talking to her, then he would support her in whatever way he could. Squeezing her hand, he smiled warmly up at her.

"If you believe she'll help..." Jace's heart raced, though he calmed it as best he could, "I will trust you and help you in any way you need. Remember, you're not alone anymore."

"I know...Thank you, my love," Selene smiled lovingly, a deep warmth radiating from her.

He could feel through their connection her conflictions about the whole thing, but she was steady when she said her mother would help. He would have to trust Selene.

"Selene..." Liana spoke up quietly, "Are you sure? A healer will take the damage if it's too much."

Liana's face was grim, and Jace knew the reason almost immediately. She was reminded of her own mother who took Jace's injuries as her own. His heart went out to her, and so he embraced her with his other arm as they continued to walk. She smiled warmly, leaning into him while keeping pace.

"Thanks, love," Liana kissed him lightly on the cheek, "I'm alright though, I just want to know if she's sure about this."

"I am," Selene stated simply, "I made it clear to her that she is to do so carefully. My mother...wants to earn my trust. She can't do that if she's dead."

"I suppose she can't," Liana nodded, sighing, "So, what do you want us to do? From Jace's reaction, he's angrier than even you."

"What!? I'm not angry..." Jace exclaimed, though he was partially lying.

The girls all gave him a doubtful look, to which he rolled his eyes and sighed heavily.

"Damn it, alright, I'm angry," Jace shook his head, "How the hell did you even know?"

"Your brow," Liana poked him gently between the forehead, "It does this little thing where it tenses up ever so slightly. You think you're neutral, but your body betrays you."

"...Stupid body," Jace sulked, sighing as he relaxed his face that he didn't know was so tense, "But, honestly, I'm not that angry, though I am angry. I'm not sure how to feel about Selene's mother, but...I trust her, and will support Selene however she needs."

Selene's ears grew red and smiled a small smile.

"I appreciate it," Selene squeezed his hand, "For now, just stay by my side."

"Always," Jace beamed.

Pulling her closer, the four of them walked behind the doctors. Kiera had been quiet, but her support was obvious as she held Liana's hand. It wasn't long before they finally entered the room his mother would be staying in until she recovered.
