Gardenia stared at the wooden stake. It had been a long time since she was threatened with an oversized toothpick. Still, this primitive tool was blessed by the church and could easily kill her.
Her heart pumped steadily. She was not afraid.
Nothing in life lasted forever; if it did, it was an abomination of the Lord's creation. She was taught that when she was young.
"Well?" He said with a bark.
Her eyes memorized the face of the man who would finally give her the peace she was too scared to seek. She wondered if he would make it painless? She wondered if she could meet the villagers again? Would the Lord let her meet them? She had so many things to apologize for and twice as much to thank them for.
Her mind berated her with the memory of her family killing all the villagers. The blood. The scent. The scream.
Tilly.
"A-ah..." Tears formed in her eyes.
"Crying won't save you, vampire." The man pressed the stake against her chest, and blood seeped through her nightgown.
"Sir..." She said with a hiccup. "I...I have sinned and..." The tears obstructed her vision until the man in front of her was a hazy blob of gold and white.
"Were you responsible for slaughtering all the innocent people?" The man asked. His voice was quiet but deadly.
"D-did everyone die?" Gardenia asked.
A hand wrapped around her throat and pushed her up against the wall. "I'm the one asking you the questions, vampire." He hissed. "Did you enjoy killing them all? You must not be in want of any food considering how you desecrated their bodies."
In her mind's eyes, she was strapped to the chair. The shackles of her trauma forced her to watch her family tear everyone apart. It was on repeat. The screams of their despair drudged up more memories, memories she had worked hard to bury.
She sobbed. They all died because of her. It was her fault!
"I-I wanted to save them." The hand around her throat loosened before regaining its strength. "I begged and begged."
She recognized his uniform. The church must've sent him to hunt her and her family. If he had come earlier, would he have saved the villagers?
She banished that thought as soon as it came. She had no right to blame the death of the villagers on him. It was her fault, and she alone should suffer the consequence.
She knew he did not care to listen to her sins. She knew that he would not absolve her of her crimes. But, still, she was a being that was filled with hope.
Her hand reached out to the space that divided them. She dared not taint him with her blood-soaked hand. "Sir...may you please pray for me?"
He pulled back as if she burned him.
Her body slid down the wall until she crumpled to the floor.
"Pray? You're asking me to pray for you?" He asked with disbelief.
Gardenia's head hung low. Her hair acted as a curtain to cover her shame.
"A m-man from the church once told me that if I could get someone to pray for me before my death, the Lord may pity me, and I may have a chance to see the deceased once more." She balled her hands into a tight fist. "Was he wrong, sir?"

The man before her didn't respond.
She peeked through her hair.
The man's brows were furrowed, and the weapon in his hand rested by his side.
He matched her gaze and crouched down until she was at eye level with him.
With one finger, he tilted her head up by her chin. "How many have you killed?"
"I-I dunno, sir." She blinked away the tears.
"How long have you lived for?"
"I'm not sure, sir."
The light from the oil lamp flickered before it fizzled out. The room darkened save for the pillar of light created by the moon. However, it did not matter to her as she could still see the man as bright as day.
His face flinched from the sudden darkness, and he squinted his eyes, trying to get accustomed to the new setting. He blinked several times before focusing his gaze back on her.
"Why are you just staying still? Why aren't you fighting back?" The man asked.
His tone held no mockery to his words. His curiosity was genuine.
There was comfort in being in the dark. Gardenia felt reassured that the man may not see her features clearly, or the emotions she bared from her soul. He may be the last human she would ever talk to before her death.
She would rather be killed by a human than live forever bonded by her master. She almost burst out into self-disparaging laughter. If any of her family members heard her say that, they would beat her senseless.
"I wanted to die. But I was scared that I would never meet the people I love after I die because I'm a being that the Lord curses."
She wondered if the man in front of her was aware of the expression he was showing her.
Gardenia smiled. This human reminded her of the villagers; he was like Tilly, gentle and kind.
"I'm not sure how long I've lived, but I've lived long enough to see many cities and villages perish by human's own hands. I've seen mountains change and the land taking shape to new forms. I've lived a long time to the point I no longer think about the time that had passed."
The man contemplated her answers before sighing. "If you answer the next few questions honestly, I will pray for you before I kill you." His gaze was unwavering and honest.
She stared in awe. What did she do to be blessed with meeting so many kind humans? "Thank you, sir. Thank you." She had the urge to press her lips to the back of his hand and weep out a thousand tears.
It was worth suffering to survive long enough for this one moment.
His eyes flickered, almost akin to discomfort.
The man dropped his hand and sat down in front of her.
"Where is the vampire queen?"
