This woman – no – this vampire was odd, unnerving even.

She looked like a vampire, but there wasn't a hint of a rotting smell that usually oozed out from the vampires. The more the vampires consumed the humans, the stronger the scent of rot and decay. When asked if she had killed anyone, she hesitated.

Raphael observed the vampire.

Could she be a mutant? An outlier?

His eyes zeroed in on her cuts and bruises. Her left eye was almost swollen shut. Her limbs were too thin and her porcelain skin brought out the black and blue markings to the point that it was even visible in the dark. Vampires were known to regenerate their bodies and heal quickly. So why wasn't she?

He assessed her nightgown, which was in tatters. He frowned when she had dried blood caked all over her. Was that from her feast?

Slowly, his eyes trailed to her manacles. Did the other vampires lock her up because she was dangerous? The situation didnt line up.

Raphael stared into her eyes. Then, he cast one of his blessings that forced any being that stared into his eyes to tell the truth.

This 'monster' cried too quickly and smiled too easily.

He hated it.

For a moment, he 'pitied' this despicable creature.

'Too weak. You're too weak, boy.' The bishop's voice constantly rang in his mind.

He was not weak.

He promised to eradicate all the vampires, and he would keep it.

Paul would be aggrieved to know that he disposed of a vampire that did not fit the mould. But he dared not keep a single one alive. That was his creed to live and die by.

There was no point in asking questions about the vampires. There was no need to know more about them or understand them. They were just thoughtless  and violent monsters.

It was a problem when he didn't believe it himself.

Clicking his tongue, he stared into her eyes that sparkled more like rubies than spilt blood. Then, narrowing his eyes, he cast a stronger truth-seeking blessing in case she had resistence to it.

"Where is the vampire queen?" He asked.

The vampire knitted her brows together. "The vampire queen?"

She blinked twice before realization dawned on her.

"I'm the vampire queen...I suppose." She nibbled at her lower lip.

The blessing did not catch her lie, but he knew she could not be a vampire queen.

"Are you lying to me?" His body tightened like a string on a bow. "One lie and I will not pray for you."

"No!" She threw herself to the ground; her body trembled. "I promise, sir, I'm not lying. I promise. Please, please, believe me!"

He was taken aback by her strong reaction.

Why did he feel bad looking at the monster grovel by his feet?

"Get off the floor," he ordered.

The vampire immediately sat up straight. Her eyes were swimming in tears.

This was clearly all a ruse. She was probably laughing inside how easily she made him feel flustered.

"I'm not lying, sir." She looked down.

His eyes narrowed. Did this monster catch on that he used a truth-seeking blessing on her? "Eyes on me, vampire." He said with a hiss.

Her shoulders jumped. She bit into her lower lip and slowly looked up.

Raphael moved in closer, their face barely an inch apart. "Now, answer again. Are. You. Lying?"

Her petite frame trembled, and her eyes wavered, trying to force herself to keep eye contact with him. The red on her cheeks seemed brighter.

"I-I-I'm n-n-n-n-not l-lying, s-sir." She said with a heavy stutter.

He looked deeply into her eyes, and there were no indications that she was lying.

He leaned back to his original position. It was odd. This vampire was clearly not the queen, so why would she say she was? Perhaps she believed she was a queen, and hence the blessing didn't activate.

"Why do you call yourself the vampire queen?"

The vampire placed a hand over her chest and steadied her breathing.

'What the hell is she doing?' Raphael thought. 'Is she sick? Is she dying?' He tucked this information into the back of his mind.

"I married the master of a cl-clan." Her eyes dropped low again. She hugged herself tightly. "M-my master i-is very st-strong, s-so m-my f-family c-calls him th-their king." She shivered and closed her eyes. "T-they call me their q-queen, b-but I'm sure t-they don't mean it."

She raised her head and forced a smile. "I apologize, sir. I-I didn't mean to look away."

The sight of this vampire self-soothing herself as she slightly rocked back and forth pricked his heart. Somehow...somehow, he felt like the monster in this situation.

'Get a hold of yourself.' Raphael admonished himself.

"So, is your master the vampire queen?" Raphael tried again.

"I-I'm sorry?" She furrowed her brows in confusion.

An awkward silence settled between them.

Could it be that this vampire didn't know about the vampire queen? That would be nonsense, right? All the vampires should naturally know about the vampire queen. But then again, this girl looked dim-witted.

He decided to try a different tactic. "If you are the vampire queen, where is your clan? Why would they leave you chained up like this?" He waved his hand at her current state.

Her confused face dropped, along with her gaze. "I guess they hoped the vampire hunter would find me and finally dispose of me for good."

"That still doesn't answer my question."

The vampire tugged her nightgown to cover her bare thighs, though it only revealed her cleavage further. Raphael quickly looked away and stared above her head.

"W-when vampires mate, they have the natural urge to protect their mate from death. But, the bond can be broken when a vampire hunter kills the other mate without affecting their partner."

"I...see." Raphael could give a rat's ass about the vampire's sex life. "So, you know nothing about the vampire queen?"

"Maybe if you give me some description, I could help point you in the right direction? I've met many vampires throughout my life."

He winced. His shoulders had been hurting this whole time, and he didn't anticipate this to turn into a conversation rather than an interrogation.

He gritted his teeth. He'll endure it and get his answers.

Even if it meant educating a vampire about their own history.
