Chapter 11: V1C11 – The World They Returned To

After telling the party that Vetheris was alive, mixed reactions and unpleasant expressions showed on their faces. It was mostly irritation...

"We have to go through all of that again...this sucks!"

"Now now, don't say that Rino. We're heroes now remember?"

"Oh right!"

Rino smiled back toothily. Ryosuke took the lead,

"Well, we have another objective but that doesn't change the fact we made it back to Earth safely. For now, we should check what happened in our absence."

"Too bad our phones died, the time might flow differently too so we should check with this world's devices."

Ayame brought up a valid point.

"True, there should be computers in the school library..."

"Let's go."

Looking outside the windows, a black night could be seen covering the sky. The rooms were noticeably dustier as well since they weren't used for months. The group made their way to the library, which was obviously locked. The surreal sight of high schoolers walking through school in seemingly fantasy-like cosplay with real weapons was sure to shock anyone who saw it. Anyways, after Sato used his signature unlocking magic, the door opened with ease. After strolling over and booting up the old computer...

"It's...been exactly 5 months since we got summoned in [Orvinus], and 5 months have passed here on Earth. It seems that the flow of time wasn't accelerated, it was the same."

"W-What!? Oh no, I need to call my parents...I'm sure they're worried sick. How are we going to explain this? 7 high schoolers suddenly went missing for 5 months and came back from another world!?"

"Calm down! Don't call anyone yet, we need to sort out all the information..."

"Hmm? What's this?"

Saegusa pointed to the screen whose browser was automatically set to recent news. 

"[Curse] appearances dropping in Tokyo rapidly, the mysterious [Ethereal Princess of Darkness Aki]?"

"Is this the real news? Not some recently announced anime or something?"

Pictures of mangled black monsters were caught in parts of the screen, the presumed [Curses].

"Are you sure this is the right Earth? It's not an alternate universe or something right?"

"Thouria said that this should be the exact place we were summoned from though..."

As Ryosuke searched quickly for [Curses] and [Magical Girls], the stunning information hit the returnees like a cold slap.

"There are monsters...on Earth too? [First Contact] happened right before our transfer! Are they somehow related!? Forget the [Demon Lord], we need to survive here first...!"

"[Magical Girls]? It's like fiction...well other world transfers are also works of fiction. What even are [Focals]!?"

"Rino, can you sense the situation outside the school?"

"Yeah."

Rino Fujiwara, a petite girl with child-like freshness and energy who was also summoned to [Orvinus] 5 months ago. When preparing to defeat the [Demon Lord], she mostly trained in the art of stealth, scouting, and detection. Her perception abilities can extend for a wide radius and reveal hidden truths...

"[Magic Search]."

She cast the spell and an impossibly thin layer of mana began to cover every surface. 

"Did you find anything?"

"I don't feel anything particularly noteworthy..."

"Hmm, I will now search for the time we were transported. Clearly, there should be some data on 7 missing high schoolers right?"

After a moment...

"None? There's nothing! There is no news about us going missing on that day. No, since we were transported right before [First Contact], does that mean we're assumed to be dead? We need to let them know we're alive!"

Ryosuke immediately stood up from the cheap chair.

"Okay, come to my place...let's try not to ensue panic for all your families simultaneously."

"Sounds like a plan."

*doorbell rings*

"Yes~ I'm coming..."

The door opens and behind it is a cheerful-looking lady in her forties, Ryosuke's mother.

"Ara..Ryo brought home is friends? Well then, come in come in. I'll ready some tea..."

Ryosuke's mother left with that and the 7 stood there dazed. After heading in and taking cover from the endless night, they immediately went up to Ryosuke's room.

The party wore incomprehensible looks as they walked up cautiously. The living quarters of Ryosuke Hikaru is a mansion, and as such his room is unbelievably spacious. Lining the room were his favorite band posters and games as well as exercise equipment in one corner. There was also a large wardrobe, a mirror, and a large shelf lined with books of many genres. In the center were his bed, a low table, and a television. The room had been untouched for months, so the feel was pretty grim. It was made lively again by the entrance of 7 people though. As some sat on the bed and others sat down near the low table to discuss...

"W-Why was your mom so casual!? We've been gone for 5 months you know!? Also, probably assumed dead!"

"It's like the world forgot about us for those 5 months..."

*door open*

Ryosuke's warm mother came in and poured some tea which they gratefully accepted.

"Hey, mom..."

"What is it Ryo?"

"Do you know where I was the past 5 months?"

"You were here right? You just did as you normally did, didn't you? I know we've been shut-in because of the [Curses] though."

"No, I went somewhere..."

"Hm? To a friend's house?"

"No, I went to another world mom!"

She made a confused face.

"What are you on about? Stop talking nonsense...are you getting enough rest? Need to send your friends home?"

Ayame began to quietly whispher...

"Ryosuke...I don't think you're getting through to her."

"No, that's fine. Uh, thanks for the tea mom."

"No problem."

She then went out and closed the door thoughtfully.

"What was that?"

"It's like our absence was rewritten to be naturally glossed over."

"Like the universe correcting itself?"

"When we were transported, the world adapted to our disappearance. No police were called and our families weren't concerned, a big panic would erupt if that didn't happen. Well, not like anything can be a bigger panic causer than [First Contact] though."

"So is the world writing us back in because we came back? Were we not supposed to come back?"

"Everyone, I think we need to rethink our situations here."

"When we were transported, [First Contact] swept the world and [Curses] attacked. Then, [Focals] gave [Magical Girls] supernatural powers to fight against them to save humanity. It makes me wonder if these powers are like the Goddess [Ervia]'s blessings. Maybe they use a unique type of magic? Well, leaving that aside, the world has changed greatly since our departure. Most services shut down and the economy turned...it seems to be regaining itself recently from the shock though with the help of [Curses] being destroyed by [Magical Girls]."

"A pretty crazy story, I can't believe all that happened in the short months we were using to subjugate another world's [Demon Lord]..."

"Yeah, and to top all that, it seems like our existences were rewritten somehow. Perhaps it's an effect of being suddenly transferred out of this world, but no one remembers us being absent for 5 months at all. As you saw from my mom right now, they're acting completely naturally as if we didn't disappear. Even if we make them acknowledge the fact, they'll dodge or ignore it, like the universe is correcting everything that happened in those 5 months. I'm sure the people back in [Orvinus] will remember since they have greater magic resistance and the spells were intentional though..."

"Well, think of this as good fortune!"

"Good fortune?"

"We won't have to explain to anyone where we were when we went missing (that's a lot of w). We can live freely without causing panic, isn't that why we returned to Earth?"

"Yes, but [First Contact] was unexpected, as well as the presence of Vetheris on Earth. As Heroes, it's our duty to bring order to them."

"Ever since you became the great Hero of [Orvinus], you've been going on and on about the duty and obligation of a hero. Get over yourself man, if you're a hero then enjoy yourself."

"That's right! No need to be so serious Ryo~"

"I'm fine...it's just that we have power so we have to carry responsibility."

"Yes yes...responsibility, of course."

"Okay, I think that you guys are free to go back to your families. Make sure to report by text when you charge your phone into the group chat about the situation. If all the information checks out, no one should be suspicious of our absence."

"Roger that."

The other 6 left Ryosuke in his room and he fell back onto his bed.

"...[Magical Girls], [Curses], [Demon Lord], [Hero]...why did I return to Earth exactly I wonder?"
