Chapter 3: Book 1 – Chapter 3

As they walked, the Spring mist finally dispersed -- the academy appeared in all its glory under the clear blue sky.

 

The school gates stood in front of them, flower beds decorated both sides of the brick path as it extended forwards and through the stone arch into which the gates were set. There was a fountain -- set in the middle of a clear square -- visible through the wrought iron.

 

To the left of the square was a brick mansion and tall tower, the classic brick, medieval structure, made it obvious that this was a school for Magic Users.

 

On the right, there was a stone barracks-like structure, with brick dorms lined up inside and around it -- this was the side belonging to the Knights.

 

Kazuki stopped in front of the school gates and turned to face Kanae, “Please show me around the school. This is the reason that we rushed here early.”

 

“Please rest assured and leave it to me! Then, we shall begin by visiting the Magic Division~!” Kanae said, her cheerful attitude reappearing.

 

However, just as they were about to start walking.

 

“President! I finally found you, President!”

 

From the other side of the gate, off to the right, came the voice of a male.

 

A bulky guy rushed towards the siblings. He was wearing the uniform of the Knight Division, his hair was cut short and a longsword was strapped to his waist.

 

“Torazou?! Why are you here?” Kanae asked, seeming surprised by the appearance of the person.

 

“President, why didn’t you reply to the text messages? You didn’t even respond when I called you.”

 

“I have the important duty of leading a freshman around the campus. Didn’t I say to absolutely not bother me? I made certain to convey this when I submitted the application to return home from school! Of course I switched off my phone!”

 

After hearing these words, Torazou looked towards Kazuki, “So, is this person the new Summoner?”

 

“Mhm, this person is my older brother. He is super strong and a brother that I am proud of!” Kanae said, her eyes narrowing.

 

“The president’s older brother? Even though he only entered the school this year?”

 

“Of course! He only acquired an Enigma at the beginning of this year,” Kanae rolled her eyes.

 

Her expression suddenly became serious, threatening, “So, why did you come find me? I will decide, based on your response, whether or not to cut you!”

 

Kanae placed her hand on the handle of one of her shortswords, threateningly.

 

Torazou flinched.

 

“S-Sorry…There’s a person from the Magic Division that is causing problems in the garden and he is causing a commotion…”

 

“A dispute? But Torazou, you disregarded the commotion and specifically searched for me?”

 

“Iori is waiting at the scene. I suddenly recalled hearing that you were going to lead a freshman, so I didn’t bother and took the chance to look at the school’s front gates.”

 

Kanae placed a hand on her forehead, “Awful…What a useless person. Stop relying on me so much. Can you still be considered as the 3^rd Place in the Student Council of the Knight Division?”

 

“But, if president cannot think of a way to solve it, the dispute with the Magic Division might escalate. Only you have the authority to deal with them.”

 

Kanae turned towards Kazuki and revealed a dejected expression, “Well then, older brother…I am extremely sorry, but there seems to be an emergency situation.”

 

“Don’t be concerned about it. Good luck, Kanae.” Kazuki replied.

 

“Damn, it can’t be helped. Let’s go, Torazou. Quickly, bring me to the scene!”

 

Kanae and Torazou rushed over to the site of the dispute.

 

Feeling proud of his sister, Kazuki smiled as he watched his sister, before his expression suddenly darkened, “Speaking of which…Umm. Well, this side seems to be the Magic Division.”

Heading to the Magic Division, Kazuki saw that there were many brick buildings lined up, along with several towers -- which looked like Mage Towers from medieval Europe.

 

Although it was still early, there were a few students -- both male and female -- scattered around.

 

He couldn’t help but think that he had come to an amazing place. Truthfully, he didn’t have any confidence in his Magic talent -- especially his Magic Power.

 

Why was I given an Enigma?

 

In order to avoid the gazes of the students around him, Kazuki headed to a location where there were less people.

 

However, just as he walked for a while -- his vision was suddenly obscured.

 

“Guess -- Who am I?”

 

A voice entered his ears.

It was undoubtedly a voice that he had never heard before. At the same time, a soft feeling pressed against his back.

The hands were removed from over his eyes, Kazuki immediately turned around and looked behind him.

 

What entered his vision, was -- a tall girl with a slim figure. Her long, smooth, hair flowed out behind her in the early morning breeze.

 

The girl’s large, sparkling eyes seemed to be staring through Kazuki.

 

“...Who?” Kazuki muttered in a daze -- he knew that as long he had met this person at least once, he would never forget her.

 

“The correct answer is…” The girl paused, “It’s our first meeting!”

 

Kazuki felt shocked.

 

“Sorry, because I wanted to become your friend, it couldn’t be helped.” Her face bloomed into a dazzling smile, which revealed her dimples.

 

“My name is Otonashi Kaguya. A mysterious and beautiful girl -- a 16 year old girl who has her eyes filled with tears because of her name being teased. I am your senior.”

 

She placed a hand on her surprisingly large, and supple, chest as she made a self-introduction.

 

“Uhh, my name is…” Kazuki started.

 

“I know! You are the older brother of the Knight Division’s Student Council President, Kenshi Kazuki!”

 

“You are familiar with my younger sister?”

 

“Our relationship is very good! And because you are a strange existence…granted a golden Enigma, instead of the normal blue or black -- I did some investigation.”

 

Strange? Well, it is true, my Enigma is different from most others.

 

“Anyways, please be my friend!” Otonashi gripped Kazuki’s hand, her face approaching his.

 

Otonashi’s gem-like eyes seemed to emit an intense light. Due to the power of her gaze, Kazuki felt pressure -- he couldn’t help but nod his head.

 

“Success!” Otonashi happily shook Kazuki’s hand, and arm, almost cheering, “I am friend number 1!”

 

“Then please call me Kaguya.”

 

“Alright, senior Kaguya.” Kazuki smiled in return.

 

“Senior…senior, huh. It feels somehow, embarrassing.” Kaguya’s face was filled with a smile. “Incidentally, why are you in such a remote location? An adventure?”

 

Kaguya was still holding Kazuki’s hand, her face approaching as she spoke.

 

Kazuki could smell her scent, which was pleasing, and slightly citrusy. “Until recently, my younger sister was showing me around, but because of an emergency, she had to leave. Thus, I didn’t know what to do, and decided to hang around here.”

 

“Ahaha.” Kaguya giggled, “Well then, as a replacement, allow me to show you around the school! Okay -- let’s head off to the famous attraction, the Witch’s House!”

 

With those words, she pulled Kazuki’s hand.

 

Kazuki felt his cheeks heating, but he wouldn’t lose to her. He gripped her hand tightly, causing Kaguya to let out a strange ‘Wah’ sound.

However, just after they had walked for a short while, Kazuki sensed something strange. It felt like a pressure on him, and a stirring of the Mana which flowed through his Mana Circuits.

 

The keen senses that he had trained as a Knight, along with his newly gained Magic abilities were alerting him to an abnormal situation.

 

“...This is.” Kazuki unconsciously tensed.

 

“Oh? You noticed as well? How keen.” Kaguya said, her smile slowly disappearing from her face, “In a nearby location, a great volume of Magic is flowing.”

 

Somewhere in the academy, nearby, large-scale Magic -- Summoning Magic -- was currently being used.

 

“Let’s go check out the situation!” Kaguya said, her expression tense and her grip on Kazuki’s hand tightening as the two of them broke into a run.
