Chapter 26: Book 1 – Chapter 26

Kazuki sensed the flow of Magic and realized that evasion was impossible. Even Defensive Magic wouldn’t make it in time with his current chanting speed.

 

Large-scale Destruction Magic. The summoning of Hell -- Magic that changed space itself.

 

The world was being crushed and devoured by the rifts -- the space where Kazuki and the others stood was converted into a pitch-black dimension. The surroundings suddenly became a red-hot hell.

 

This place was the world of fire from Norse mythology -- Muspelheim. Like being trapped in a massive oven, there wasn’t much to be done other than accepting death.

 

However--

 

“...White World!”

 

Along with the familiar, emotionless voice, snow scattered and danced in the now red-hot space. Flame and ice collided, offsetting each other, the world once again broke and shattered.

 

The shard of Muspelheim expelled its prisoners, returning them back into the normal world.

 

The one who cast the powerful Magic -- the antithesis of fire and heat -- was Koyuki.

 

Floating beside the girl was Vepar, the mermaid of the 72 Pillars. This powerful Demon was releasing a near-transparent blue light.

 

“Koyuki! Wow, even though you are a first year, you can use such a powerful Magic!” Mio allowed her shock to show.

 

“...Please show some fighting spirit, to survive! Otherwise, you’ll die, you know!” Koyuki spoke emphatically -- surprising her two companions.

 

Because of Koyuki’s reprimand, both Kazuki and Mio quickly began chanting again.

 

“Invite Draken!”

 

Space near Kaya split again and two small Dragons flew out.

 

““Barrett!””

 

Two flaming bullets shot the small flying Dragons down in an instant -- they had no chance to do any damage.

 

Taking the chance, Kazuki darted towards Kaya and swung his sword -- even though it felt wrong to attack someone who had once been important to him -- he had the will to attack. Removing all of her Magic Power and Emptying her, maybe then he could have the Knights save her life.

 

“How cruel~” Kaya said, “Brother, do you really wish to fight?”

 

Even though she spoke distractedly, Kaya’s sword moved automatically and blocked Kazuki’s slash.

Having managed to kill the larger Dragons, Kanae suddenly appeared from behind Kaya and assaulted her.

 

But the attack, which should have been completely unseen by the target, was automatically intercepted by the strange sword.

 

“Kanae?!” Kazuki let out a surprised voice, delight evident in his expression, as he moved his gaze to Kanae.

 

“Older brother, I killed the Dragons!” Kanae said excitedly, before whispering, “Though the Magic Division helped me…”

 

“And I have come to help!” She continued.

 

“Idiot, don’t be careless!” Kazuki shouted.

 

Kaya showed that she could compete against Kazuki and Kanae at the same time using a single large sword -- furthermore, with the high-speed activation of Drive, she was also matching the back-up Summoning Magic of the two people from the Magic Division’s Student Council, who had just joined the fight alongside Kanae.

 

“Is this girl a Monster?!” Hikaru let out as Kaya showed power that far surpassed that of a normal Illegal Magic User.

 

“President! The second Dragon isn’t dead!” A shout came from behind.

 

Kanae spun at the sound and saw -- Nidhogg opening its remaining eye and standing up while raising a claw overhead, aimed at her back.

 

But Torazou -- the one who had shouted the warning -- sprinted forwards and unleashed a slash with his full strength. It seems that someone had lent him a sword, after the destruction of his first when fighting Hikaru. With a loud noise, the sword and claw clashed.

 

Torazou was sent flying, but the claw was also repelled.

 

“Torazou?! Thank…you.”

 

“Captain, stop being so obstinate and cooperate with the Magic Division! I’ll hold back Nidhogg -- Kazuki can fight the summoner -- join the rest of the Magic Division fighting the other Dragon!” Torazou shouted.

 

“It didn’t die either!?” Kanae slumped as she realized that the green Dragon had been faking its death as well. “Fine…”

 

“Torazou, I leave Nidhogg to you! Absolutely don’t die!”

 

Kanae stopped her assault on Kaya and sprinted to the other side of the battlefield, where the Green Dragon was fighting a contingent of the Magic Division.

Kazuki was carefully observing the thickness and colouring of Kaya’s Magic Power, noticing that it was beginning to decline. When comparing it to when she first summoned the Dragons and the shard of Muspelhiem, her Magic was getting smaller and less impressive; even her sword-work was becoming a little sluggish.

 

Kazuki could see Kaya’s limit.

“Please, no…” Kaya suddenly whispered. “Stop it already…even though I love him, even though it’s a precious memory…Why must I kill them…? If this continues, I will be alone forever…”

 

Her nose was leaking blood as she whispered in an anguished tone.

 

Even so, her sword kept moving.

 

“I can’t stop! Brother, please help me!”

 

Kazuki was unsure if this was a trick or not, but he was distracted when Torazou was sent flying by Nidhogg in the distance.

 

Even if Kaya was stopped, the Dragons that had already been summoned wouldn’t disappear.

 

…

 

Kaya was being incessantly attacked by both Kazuki’s sword and Mio’s Barretts.

 

Kazuki had to keep fighting the waves of guilt running through him, silently vowing to do his best to save the obviously unstable girl in front of him.

 

Suddenly, Kazuki noticed a powerful surge of Magic, causing him to spontaneously look back to Kaguya.

 

The Magic Division Council’s Choral Magic had succeeded and the Spirit of Asmodeus herself had been summoned. The black robed woman that Kazuki had seen once before at the welcoming ceremony was standing over Hikaru and Koyuki who had collapsed from a lack of Mana, and facing Kaguya.

 

“Seventh Inferno!” Kaguya commanded.

 

Asmodeus let out a chuckle and raised her right arm grandly. Appearing behind her was a gigantic, ominous violet gate. The gate quickly opened and violet miasma came flooding out.

 

The miasma avoided Kazuki and the others -- only the enemy, as judged by Kaguya, were swallowed up.

 

A moment later, Asmodeus snapped the fingers of her still-raised right arm. The miasma suddenly transformed into reddish-black flames.

 

Kaya and both Dragons were swallowed completely, not even a strand of hair -- or single scale -- was visible.

 

“Kaya!” Kazuki couldn’t help but shout.

 

Kaguya’s flames had swallowed Kaya, who had been approaching the limits of her Magic Power and exhausted almost all of her strength -- he could only see the frail shine of her blue Defensive Magic.

 

“Kaguya, please, stop the flames!”

 

Kaguya, who couldn’t imagine the connection between Kazuki and Kaya, was confused by the panic in Kazuki’s voice.

 

“That Summoning Magic will kill her!”

 

“Kazuki…Sorry. After summoning this flame, even I cannot control it. Even if it’s only a tiny hate, everything of the opponent will be assaulted by the concept of Death itself; but compared to bringing down the two dangerous Monsters, I cannot show preference to the life of that Illegal Magic User. Everyone else has already been worn out, you see!”

 

Looking around, Kazuki noticed that Torazou had fallen down in exhaustion. Kanae had received a single attack from a poisoned claw and was crouching. Hikaru and Koyuki were laying on the ground because of using their Magic Power just short of being Emptied because of the Choral Magic required for Kaguya’s final spell.

 

The only ones still standing were Kazuki, Mio, and Kaguya.

 

If Kaguya were to interrupt the Magic…

 

The already badly wounded Fafnir could be defeated with the Magic Power remaining to Mio and Kaguya -- if they worked together. But, the problem was Nidhogg…which can regenerate from any wound that didn’t instantly kill it, while it still had strength and Mana remaining.

 

“He,  Help me, brother!” Kaya pleaded for help from within the flames.

 

“Kazuki…Besides, if that girl escapes, the crisis will become even more grave. I won’t hesitate any more like I did with Earth Snake. I cannot hesitate. Because I am the strongest Summoner in the Academy!”

 

Her eyes burned with a sense of responsibility as she shouted her reply. While doing so, she kept supplying Asmodeus with Mana -- who continued to burn the ones considered enemies by Kaguya.

 

…I understand that senior is correct.

 

Kazuki sighed and looked away.

 

“Stopp! I don’t want to die! Stop, stop! Help me -- Loki! Power…give me more power!!”

 

The moment that Loki’s name was yelled, the Defensive Magic in Kaya rapidly and greatly increased.

 

…

 

Kazuki couldn’t help but doubt his eyes.

 

This kind of recovery wasn’t at the level of recovering some power -- an enormous amount of glowing light appeared, which couldn’t even be compared to the girl’s original condition, started to push back the flames.

 

“...?!” Kaguya accidentally leaked a whisper, “Something like this is impossible. This kind of power…it’s inhuman!”

 

Kaya, who should have been using her power to escape, began to scream.

 

<<Kazuki…that girl, is being taken over right now.>>

 

During the uneasy silence, Leme’s voice resounded inside Kazuki’s head.
