{--First year class two: Amasaki Mio, Kenshi Kazuki, and Hiakari Koyuki, urgent. Please come to the Student Council’s room.}
As soon as school was over, the voice of Kaguya was broadcast over the intercom. Kazuki’s eyes met Koyuki’s, before the two of them got up and joined Mio -- who sat at the front -- and they left the class together.
The Witches’ Mansion was the dormitory of the Student Council, so there was a different room for when they had meetings. The location was next-door to the staff room of the Magic Division.
A notice was fixed to the door with a message that read: [This week’s Spirit Contracting Ritual will be performed Wednesday instead of Monday.]
Although they had been urgently summoned, there was no one other than Hikaru inside.
“Kaguya will come soon, so please wait a little.” She smiled.
…
After a few moments, the door opened and Kaguya entered.
“I made you wait, huh? Today I will introduce a new comrade, okaaay~!” She spoke with a merry voice. “Come in! This child is the new A-Rank first year…Charlotte!”
Kaguya turned back to the corridor, and Lotte appeared in the doorway.
“Please treat me well! Ah, the anime person! I’m in the same class with the three of them!” Lotte said with a wide smile.
“It might be confusing for me to say this so suddenly, but as you guys have likely guessed -- this girl isn’t your everyday student.” Elizabeth said as she entered behind Lotte and closing the door. “It is a lie that she is a distant relative. Actually, this girl doesn’t even have Japanese citizenship -- she escaped from Germany in a private jet. She is a refugee. The reason she was forced to leave was because of family matters…she is the daughter of the current ruler, and the rest of the family is trying to have her assassinated so her brother can take charge.”
To the stunned student, Elizabeth began explaining about the current situation of Europe.
Germany was one of the large factions of Europe, meaning that if Lotte were to take over, she would have access to a lot of power. Normally this wouldn’t be a problem, but she disagreed with the way that a large portion of Northern Europe was governed by the churches. Catholicism had taken over almost the entirety of Europe -- lead by the Pope. Lotte planned on withdrawing Germany from the theocratic alliance and submitting to the Norse Gods.
While the Big 8 -- the largest surviving original countries; Africa had been destroyed in the Great Magic War -- all had ‘Divine’ backing from the religions that they followed; however, in the case of Germany the Norse Gods were displeased with the way that the Christian mythology was taking their territory.
However, the Big 8 had very little in the way of diplomatic relations, mostly staying to themselves so as to not start any of the mythologies ‘Ragnarok’s -- War of the Gods.
Japan’s Mythology -- the 72 Pillars -- was accepted as neutral, so the other countries were willing to talk to them.
However, a lot of the other Mythologies fed on faith, so Religions were taking charge -- Theocracies -- of most of the other Big 8; the downside of which was that they couldn’t get along with other religions. However, because the world was mostly still civilized, they would try to peacefully erase other religions -- or in the worst case, exile the followers.
“So, in a way…she is an exiled princess!” Kaguya exclaimed with a wide smile.
Elizabeth rolled her eyes.
Kazuki started at Lotte while feeling a little confused -- the girl returned an elegant smile.
He had the feeling that Lotte had the demeanour of a noble.
“Currently, Japan and Germany are still having political conversations about me. So, currently, I am nothing more than a refugee -- I am resigned no matter what kind of treatment I receive.” Lotte whispered.
“I’ll say this in advance, don’t do anything strange to her.” Elizabeth said, before glaring at Kazuki.
“It’s too late, the classmates were already…”
“What?!” Elizabeth’s expression changed.
“They kept rubbing and pulling at her cheeks.” Mio said with a grin.
“That was…it felt good~!” Lotte said in a strangely happy tone.
Elizabeth breathed a long, exhausted sigh.
“She’s not a Princess anymore, but a refugee. Right now, we aren’t sure what kind of meaning she has politically. Because of that, you guys protect her from Illegal Magic Users, or any Assassins sent by her brother.” Elizabeth said.
Of course, she left it unsaid, but everyone understood -- she was being placed in the Academy not only for instruction and protection…but also for observation.
The last point resembled Kazuki’s position.
“It was because of the circumstances that the school board made the lie about them being related. But, even if we say that she is Japanese, her speech and conduct are a little unnatural.” Elizabeth continued.
“Having said that, this girl only came looking for asylum around three days ago. She has already learned Japanese within that timeframe.”
“Three days?! How did she manage that?!”
“By telepathy. She is especially talented with Telepathy Magic. She synchronized with the consciousness of a Japanese person and then basically ‘downloaded’ their knowledge of the language and common customs.”
This was a much more advanced version of how Hikaru learned swordsmanship from Kazuki -- he couldn’t even imagine how she did it.
“The girl also received the same test as you all had to do before enrolment. It can be said that she is a genius in the field of Telepathy, which is why she received A Rank.”
“...This girl, why did she come here looking for asylum?” Koyuki inquired.
“Lotte, it’s no problem if it’s these guys -- show them your strength.” Elizabeth said.
“Yes.” She replied, before silver coloured Magic Power shone from her body.
This was the light of Summoning Magic.
“The truth shall set me free…the wise man who became the father and protector of humanity, show us your wisdom.” Her chant was different from that of the Summoning of the 72 Pillars.
The silver light converged into the shape of a human -- what appeared was a Spirit who looked like a young boy. He had golden hair and silver eyes; he was also wearing a mysterious bodysuit that was made from an unknown material that seemed to be neither cloth nor metal. Standing beside Lotte, he calmly gazed towards Kazuki and the others.
He looked like an alien or ‘human from the future’ from a bad science fiction movie made in the ‘70s.
But, just now, Lotte didn’t mention the Spirit’s name when she summoned him.
“Look, my King! This guy is even smaller than Leme!”
Leme materialized beside Kazuki, then spoke in an enthusiastic tone as she pointed at the figure of the young boy.
“Why are you getting fired up over a strange thing like that?” Kazuki asked.
“It’s not like that! This guy, he has lost even more of his strength and memory!”
“Correct. Not to mention the majority of my memory and strength, I even lost my own name.” The Spirit of the young boy said in a mechanical tone of voice without any inflection.
“Him, I call him Prophet. What is certain about him, is that he isn’t some lost Spirit of Norse Mythology. I connected with neither Germany’s mythology, nor one from Christian Mythology.”
“This is the reason that she chose to seek asylum with us. Her brother is spreading rumours that she is a Heretic Contractor, so Europe won’t accept her. She had heard rumours about America and made the intelligent decision. Australia -- her only other choice -- has become isolationist. As for China…That wouldn’t even be a possibility before Magic appeared.” Elizabeth explained.
Even in Japan, if you Contracted a Spirit -- one which could be proven malicious -- it was likely that you would have your power sealed. To seal Magic Power required the use of medication to remove mental defenses and then Telepathy Magic to either break connections between your mind and Animus Mundus…or crush that section of the human brain.
Using this method could cause personality problems, including complete catatonia -- so it wasn’t used very often…more often than not, the Knight Order would try reasoning with the Spirit, or less drastic measures.
“Why did you form the Contract then?” Mio asked.
“I suffered an illness since birth. By the time I turned fourteen, I was at death’s door -- it was at that time that Prophet contacted me. With my agreement, he partially possessed me and overwrote the parts of my body that were malfunctioning and saved me. Currently, my body is half-human and half-Spirit.” Leme explained with a large smile and cheerful tone.
“That wasn’t only an act of mercy, there was also a benefit for me -- because of the loss of my power, and name.” The boy, Prophet, explained in an emotionless voice.
“I had to inhabit a human body to stop Fading, to recover my strength…acting like a parasite. But, this didn’t mean that I had to overwrite the will and personality of my host -- so I chose someone who specialized in Telepathy and had a strong mind. Charlotte had the potential, moreover, my partial-possession saved her life. Her choice was to die from the disease, or to become an exile, but even so, our interests matched.”

“Of course I’m grateful to Prophet. I obtained a healthy body and a full lifespan. I could also escape my brother, and come to Japan. When stuck in bed, I would watch Animes and read Mangas, so I dreamed of visiting at least once.”
“Taking refuge in Japan was convenient for me. You are one of the more accepting of unknown Spirits, so I had the highest chance of survival.”
The smiling Lotte, and expressionless Prophet explained alternately.
Kazuki couldn’t help but feel doubt, Kaya’s screams when Loki possessed her echoed in his mind.
Noticing the look on Kazuki’s face, Elizabeth quickly explained, “There has been thorough investigation, using both Spirits and Telepaths -- she has no signs of encroachment on her personality. There is a clear line of separation between Leme and Prophet.”
“Moreover, we succeeded in our escape because of Prophet’s power. He could figure out how to fly the jet, after all, I have been bed-ridden since around 5 years old, so I haven’t had any lessons.” Lotte explained.
“A Spirit can fly a jet? Oi Leme, could you also operate a jet?” Kazuki asked Leme with a smile.
“...There is no way that Leme could do that. It’s doubtful if I can even ride a bicycle…When I first saw a bicycle I couldn’t figure out how it could be ridden without falling over. Which you, my King, know -- you explained it to Leme.” Leme glared at Kazuki.
Spirits came from Mythology, so without a lot of time in the real world or Contracted with people in the real world -- they were confused by everything not found in the time of the inception of their myths.
“I only operated it using intuition. But, it was a wonderful thing.” Prophet said.
“Though, when he flew, he suddenly became very excited and he sped up too much -- we almost crashed.” Lotte said this while laughing, as if she was telling a funny story.
“I have heard of Spirits losing their memory, but how could Prophet lose his strength?” Mio asked.
“That’s…Even though I lost my memory, I still slightly remember my mission. All I know is that I have to stop a calamity called the ‘Third Machia’.”
“A story from Greece? From this we can judge that Prophet is related to Greek Mythology.” Elizabeth explained, and then began a lesson.
“Greek Mythology depicted two wars, or ‘Machia’s, which was important to the existence of the universe. First was the Titanomachia, where Zeus and the other Gods overthrew the Titans, who ruled before them. The second was Gigantomachia, where the children of the Titans -- the Giants --, rebelled against Zeus.”
Prophet nodded his head, “Even though I have no idea who I am, I still have some simple knowledge. In Titanomachia, Zeus and the other Gods won only with their own strength. However, in Gigantomachia they needed the cooperation of Humans, one such person was Hercules, and they won. The third Machia…Humans with be the leading actors, and they will need to be the ones to beat the enemy.”
“Prophet has the power of prediction. For truly important things, he can perceive vague predictions.” Lotte agreed.
“It seems that my mission was opposing that of another Spirit. Because of this, I fought the Spirit, got defeated -- losing my power and memory.”
“Inside you…” Prophet whispered faintly, “Inside you, there seems to be the potential to overcome the enemy.”
The silver eyes of Prophet immediately faced Kazuki.
“You see what kind of complicated set these two are…that’s why we revealed their circumstances to you guys, we will entrust them to the Witches’ Mansion. You will also keep them under surveillance.” Elizabeth explained.
“It was the same with Kazuki, but we welcome that kind of surveillance! If you were to ask me why? Then it is because she is cute!! It’s surveillance in the name of love! I will do it with all my strength!” Kaguya exclaimed, hugging Lotte with all her strength.
Lotte’s eyes widened in surprise, but then happily returned the hug.
“There is one more thing. Mio and Kazuki, add this girl to your party.” Elizabeth looked at them.
“Eh? Into our party?” Mio asked.
Kazuki had slightly predicted this, based on some of the things that Hikaru had hinted at earlier in the morning. But Mio was surprised.
“Is it not okay?” Lotte asked with an anxious expression.
“Eh, no, it’s not that it’s not okay, but.” Mio explained, the cuteness of Lotte flustered the other girl.
“Lotte may not have been in a Contract for very long, but she can use her Summoning Magic to the third level. Prophet’s strength isn’t at the highest, but with Lotte’s skill with Telepathy -- along with her partial-possession -- her chanting speed is very fast. She should be able to compensate for your weakness.” Elizabeth said.
“Let’s do a mock battle to test it, okay?” Hikaru suggested, her tone betraying her deep interest towards an unknown Summoner.
“Understood. We will accept her into our party.” Kazuki said, glancing at Mio.
“Anime brother! Danke shun!”
Lotte separated herself from Kaguya and flew into Kazuki’s chest -- and then pressed her lips to his cheek.
“W, What?! What are you doing to Kazu?!” Mio raised a shocked voice, her eyes widened in shock.
Lotte separated from Kazuki, before hugging Mio, “Danke shun, Mio! Please take care of me!”
She also kissed Mio on the cheek.
Mio’s expression became complex -- half angry, and half shy.
Was this the way of Europe?
Elizabeth grinned at the surprised expressions. Kazuki was suspicious that the teacher knew about this custom, but hadn’t said anything because it was amusing.
“Did you prefer a kiss on the lips? Should I redo it?” Lotte asked, tilting her head in wonder when she noticed that the two people were currently bewildered.
“There is no need to redo it! K, Kissing the mouth is a no! I mean, any kind of kiss is no good!” Mio spoke frantically, her cheeks red as a tomato.
“...Why is that? Is it strange to show feelings of gratitude with a kiss? Moreover -- I clearly feel the happiness from the both of you.”
“What do you mean by sensing our feelings? Is it your Telepathy?” Kazuki asked.
“Why does your mouth say no, even though you are happy in your heart? What is this contradiction?”
“Lotte, in Japan you mustn’t kiss someone unless they are truly important to you. Especially kissing the lips.” Elizabeth explained, still grinning widely.
“Hmm, though, if I can say one thing. Kissing Kazuki’s cheek like that, if Kanae was here -- we wouldn’t be able to guarantee Lotte’s life, would we? Hahaha.” Hikaru said with a laugh.
“I also -- will pledge my allegiance toward the two of you.” Prophet said.
Magic was invoked of its own accord. His ring emitted light and a graph appeared in front of his eyes.
Amasaki Mio: 127
Otonashi Kaguya: 75
Hiakari Kaguya: 49
Hoshikaze Hikaru: 39
Lotte: 35
<<Interesting. Even though I said that it was really rare and uncommon…such a thing happened.>> Leme whispered into Kazuki’s mind.
<<My King! You should keep it to yourself…and maybe teacher Elizabeth, that your conquering target exceeds far more than 72 people!>>
…Well, didn’t Solomon have 1000 wives and concubines? Kazuki couldn’t help but sigh and roll his eyes when he directed the thought towards Leme.
Who smiled widely and winked in return.
