The entrance exam for the Magic Division finally began at the fountain square.

If this were a normal school, the principal should be the first to go up in front of the students for a rather long -- boring -- speech. However, the one standing in front of the neatly arranged freshmen, on a simple platform, was the Student Council President, Kaguya.

She had a serious expression, completely different from before -- she was also wearing a robe that covered almost her entire body.

“--The world is being changed by myths.”

Standing calmly in front of the microphone, Kaguya began a speech.

“Because of the reemergence of Magic, the world has been forced to change. The power that ‘ruled’ the world passed from science to Magic. The balance of power between countries has undergone changes as well. Moreover, Magic Beasts, Monsters, have also appeared and love attacking humans. Right now, our current world is becoming like the myths of old.”

“Although Japan has been recorded as a Magically advanced country, we are still facing numerous problems. While most countries are working together to survive the changes, the less advanced countries rapidly raise armies to try and conquer their neighbours…along with the increase of Monsters -- we have to deal with this problem, this is the responsibility of future Knights.”

There were eight Magically advanced countries, which were -- Japan, the United States, Britain, Germany, Italy, Russia, China and Australia…though Australia stayed out of most world events.

“Japan’s Spirits come from Israel’s myths ‘Solomon’s 72 Pillar Demons’. No one knows why this is, or what has happened to the original Myths of Japan -- the Spirits do not wish to discuss it. The Spirits from the other countries come from their Myths, and all of our combat capabilities are very evenly matched. On the surface, there is peace. However, it is possible that any one of the Magically advanced countries will trigger a ‘Battle of Myths’, to fight for supremacy, for the power of their own Spirits. This isn’t very likely while the balance lasts, but if there is a large change…it isn’t impossible.”

There was no knowing when the Spirits might decide to break the balance and cause all eight countries to be in danger. This was the truth about the temporary truce, the truth that people tried to forget.

“Not only abroad, but also within this country, there exists the threat of Illegal Magic Users, who use Magic for crime. They accept contracts outside the governance of the authorities. Everyone of the previous generation remembers the Magic War, they would have told you the tales.”

In the past, Illegal Magic Users had launched a full invasion of large portions of Japan, reducing Tokyo to ruins.

“In addition, cracks have been appearing in the world and the Magic from Animus Mundus has been leaking out, producing Monsters. These places are known Corrupted Zones. Clearing these Corrupted Zones is also an important job for the Knights.”

“Dealing with all of these threats is the mission of the Knights. However, don’t be afraid -- because we have access to power which will allow us to claim victory.  Everyone here has been selected by one of the 72 Pillar Demons. As Knights, and heroes of this new world, we should feel proud!”

The 72 Pillar Demons of Solomon. In the past, they had obeyed King Solomon and help establish the country of Israel and helped him construct a large kingdom. They were called Demons, but they were selected by the God of the bible to help humans.

They were also Spirits with friendly relations to most countries -- other than those governed by the Church.

After finishing her words, Kaguya suddenly began to chant an Incantation.

“I know thy name…Thy name is Asmodeus. Thy power is that of desire. Comply with the contract, obey my command and display thy power!”

Kaguya used a Spell and connected to her contractual Spirit dwelling within Animus Mundus. The interior of her robe suddenly released a purple light.

A large amount of light appeared beside Kaguya, it twisted and morphed -- before rapidly becoming a humanoid form. In a single word, what Kaguya summoned looked like a witch, covered from head to toe by black robes. Curled horns grew from the feminine head of the Witch -- there was the skull of a lamb on one shoulder and a cow on the other…which strangely suited her image, giving off a feeling of rightness.

“Kukuku, Student Council President -- you actually called me out for show like this? You are amazing, my cute Kaguya. For your honour, I will do as you wish; but you will have to pay a cost.”

This witch-like woman was one of the 72 Pillar Demons -- from Jewish mythology. She was ranked as one of the seven Great Kings of Hell, alongside others like Lucifer, Satan, Beelzebub and Belphagor. She was one of the Seven Deadly Sins.

Otonashi Kaguya -- the Academy’s strongest Summoner, contracted to one of the most powerful of the 72 Pillars.

From the distance, there came a strange sound.

Lead through the school gates and along the pathway was a large cage on wheels, pulled by a horse -- led by a few pretty female students.

What was contained in the cage elicited sounds of shock from the students.

--Within the cage was a fairly large Dragon, its body was folded into an uncomfortable position. Glowing golden chains formed from semi-transparent golden symbols bound the Dragons legs and wings, causing it discomfort.

This Dragon was a Magic Beast, a Monster, that came from Animus Mundus -- its form came from the Collective Human Subconscious -- and it attacked humans, to consume their Mana.

It wasn’t something that would be caged and used in a simple demonstration in an Academy full of teenagers.

Around 10 meters from the stage, the car stopped -- one of the girls who lead it in, walked onto the stage and stood by Kaguya’s side.

The man standing by the side of the cart quickly muttered, golden Mana swirled around him; the chains binding the Dragon dissolved into thin air.

Kaguya continued her chant as she watched the massive creature begin to move -- experimenting, confirming that its restraints had been released.

The Dragon let out an ear-shattering roar as it began to thrash, smashing its forwards claws into the silvery bars. Rapidly smashing the door open.

With another roar, causing the air to vibrate, the massive black Dragon rushed out of the cage. On its back, large bat-like wings expanded greatly, like twin tents. The total size of the Dragon was easily ten meters in length, and double that in width with wings fully extended.

It dashed towards the freshmen.

At that instant, Kazuki noticed a powerful rush of Mana and turned his gaze towards Kaguya.

There was a massive amount of purple light surrounding her, burning Kazuki’s eyes.

Kaguya’s long hair floated and swayed, her robe rustled in the breeze caused by the massive amount of Mana -- swirling like a whirlpool.

The Dragon’s open mouth was filled with massive teeth, its breath rustled the hair of nearby students -- it was about to pounce.

Kaguya calmly completed her Spell, “Flames of Desire!”

“Kukuku!”

With another creepy laugh, the two skeletal heads on Asmodeus’s shoulders opened their mouths and vomited out red-black flames which quickly and accurately surrounded the Dragon.

The Dragon’s roar turned into an agonized scream as it writhed midair.

Like tentacles, the red-black flames entangled the Dragon -- its scales, which were tougher than steel, began melting because of the immense heat.

In a short time, the Dragon melted completely, evaporating; even the thick, sickening smoke soon dissipated.

“Kukuku, when you next need me, feel free to call me; my cute Kaguya…” Asmodeus let out her creepy cackle, disappearing into particles of purple light.

“This, is Summoning Magic. This is a small sample of the power that everybody will be learning to wield from now.” Kaguya said as she looked out at the shocked freshmen before her.

Although Summoning Magic is something that can be seen on television or online…maybe because such a breathtaking scene was being shown right in front of them in person -- all of the freshmen held their breaths.

The sound of applause suddenly rang out.

However, Kazuki couldn’t help but feel doubt, deep in his heart. He had never wished for such strength, even though -- like any child with an imagination -- he had dreamed of fighting Monsters.

His gaze fell onto his left hand.

Why would someone as insignificant as me get an Enigma…especially one that is different from normal.
