The number of people who annually receive Enigmas is unknown -- but there were 144 recorded in Japan just this year. All 144 of these would be placed into the same school year, divided into three classes of 48 per class.

Kazuki was assigned to the 2nd Class, of the 1st Years; according to the seating arrangement, his seat was in the eighth row, near the center of the class room.

When he sat down, Kazuki felt overwhelmed by the almost overpowering feelings that rushed through him. He had been chosen by a Spirit -- he would have to fight Monsters and defend humans.

The classroom was filled with quiet conversations as the students found their friends, or introduced themselves to their nearby seatmates.

“Good morning! Nice to meet you all!”

At the same time as the confident voice sounded out, the classroom door was opened and a blonde girl walked in.

She was about 140cm in height, wearing an immaculate suit. She was tiny, slim and petite. Judging by her face, she didn’t look a day over thirteen -- however, this child swiftly walked up to the front of the classroom and sat at the teacher’s desk.

“Whoa, so cute!”

“She looks like a doll!”

Excited voices echoed inside the classroom.

“Hey, who was it that just called me cute?! Stand up for me!” Her face showed irritation as she stood up and hit the desk with a small fist.

With a clear, sharp voice, she spoke again, “My name is Elizabeth Westwood. I was born in England. Listen up! I am here to make all of you commoners into powerful Summoners!”

“Although I may look young, this is due to an accident which froze me at this age. Although I technically retired a few years ago, I came back because of a certain new student.”

Everyone’s eyes focused on Kazuki.

Elizabeth grinned widely, “Before things become troublesome, I should tell all of you. You have heard the news that this boy was given a strange Enigma, that he has this because of his mysterious parents. I must let you know: it is true that his Enigma is strange, but his Magic ability can only be ranked E-Rank according to the entrance tests. Don’t mistake him as some kind of superhuman or even someone special!”

After hearing this, the classroom became even louder.

Her voice was filled with provocation, and Kazuki couldn’t help but respond, “I do not plan on remaining at E-Rank.”

The so-called E-Rank was the lowest possible Rank.

Freshmen of the Vindex Academy, whether Knight or Magic Division, had to take a test upon entrance.

The test for the new students of the Magic Division not only tested the amount of Magic Power, but also their knowledge of Magic itself.

Normal Magic was generally divided into five different ‘Types’: Pyschokinetic, Pyrokinetic, Physical Enhancement, Perception, and Telepathic Magic.

However, because he was training to be a Knight, Kazuki had only trained Physical Enhancement and Perception Magic. But, right now, he was surrounded by elites -- boys and girls who had been trained in all five Types of Magic since birth, aiming to become Summoners.

Thus, Kazuki had only gotten E-Rank, the worst grade.

“That is a good answer. It seems that you understand how this Academy works! Now, everyone else -- you shouldn’t make a fuss over the new student…nor should you bully him because of his weakness. Everyone should focus on their goal of improving themselves!”

Elizabeth looked away from Kazuki, “…Also, in this class, there are two A-Ranks present.”

“I am one of the A-Ranks, Amasaki Mio!” A girl sitting towards the front of the classroom stood up.

Although Kazuki could only see her back from his seat, he noted that her hair was honey-coloured.

Elizabeth sighed, “…I didn’t ask you to introduce yourself. Sit down.”

Mio sat down obediently.

“There is no meaning to ranks before forming a contract with a Spirit.” A voice came from behind Kazuki, followed by a sigh.

“As for the other A-Rank--” Elizabeth nodded towards the person seated behind Kazuki, “That’s Hiakari Koyuki. And her words are correct.”

When Kazuki turned around, he could see an otherworldly girl.

She gave off the impression of silvery white. Her silver-coloured hair sparkled, her skin was as white as snow; long, pointed ears extended from either side of her strangely expressionless face.

Hiakari Koyuki was an extremely beautiful Elf.

Elves were humans who had been changed by the effects of the Magic within their bodies. Their Magic Power greatly surpassed that of normal people -- a closer link to the Animus Mundus changed them before they were born -- was how the scientists explained the phenomenon.

They gave off a feeling of otherworldliness, similar to the ancient myths.

Because they contained more Magic Power, it was believed that they could communicate with the Spirits more easily -- becoming Summoners more often than normal Humans.

Though Elves weren’t well-understood, some people believed them more closely related to Monsters than Humans; which led to prejudice over the fifteen years since the reappearance of Magic.

“Is there something on my face, E-Rank? Am I such a rare, thing?” With a monotone voice, the girl scolded him.

He knew that he had been staring at her face for too long.

“Sorry…it’s because I thought that you were so beautiful. Especially your hair--”

In order to prevent her from misunderstanding that he was treating her as an exotic animal, he accidentally blurted out the embarrassing truth. In fact, he had been watching her, fascinated, for quite a while.

“I’m beautiful? … You are treating me as a Monster, right?”

Koyuki obviously considered his words inconceivable and tilted her head. With this action, her silver-coloured hair brushed her silver skin, sparkling as the light hit it.

“Saying such insincere words to conceal your true thoughts, it is really disgusting.”

…Why would anyone think that? Is it because you are an Elf?

Kazuki felt annoyed -- he hated discrimination in all forms --, “I didn’t say any insincere words! I really think that you are beautiful!” He spoke with a raised voice.

Koyuki’s expression changed, her eyes widened. She held her breath for a few seconds, before whispering, “…Anyways, wouldn’t it be better if you turned back towards the front?”

After an instant, Kazuki finally remembered his current location.

“Hey, E-Rank, trying to flirt with girls when I’m talking. Are you kidding?”

All eyes had been focused on Kazuki and Koyuki, causing Elizabeth to become angry enough for a vein to stand out on her forehead.

“S, sorry.” Kazuki murmured, lowering his face.

“Strange guy.” Koyuki paused, her voice slightly softened, “I seem to have misunderstood your gaze. But, towards a person who can call someone that they just met ‘beautiful’, I don’t know how to respond. So, please, don’t stare at me.”

He clearly heard the muttering from behind him.

***

Elizabeth rapidly calmed down and continued to speak, “Just as Hiakari said, the current ranks don’t have much meaning. Your rank can constantly change over the course of your school life. The power of your contracted Spirit can also greatly influence it, along with how much effort you put in.”

“Having said that, contracting with a Spirit is based on the Class order, so while we are waiting, let’s all introduce ourselves. Beginning from seat number 1…Well, Amasaki has already introduced herself, so let’s forget it.”

“P, please wait! I only said my name, it’s not enough!”

“You adequately communicated your character to everybody, Amasaki -- who comes from a noble Magic Family.”

After hearing Elizabeth’s words, some of the class began laughing, but Mio ignored this and stood up again.

Her large eyes sparkled and her hair swayed as she spun around to face the rest of the class, “I am the future Student Council President, Amasaki Mio! My hobbies are drawing, writing poems, and also knitting! My speciality though, is of course, Magic!”

Mio met Kazuki’s eyes and those large eyes suddenly widened and her expression brightened. She waved excitedly, as though reunited with someone important, her cheeks reddened slightly.

Is she waving towards me? Kazuki was at a loss and looked behind himself, to see if Mio was waving at someone else.

However, behind Kazuki was the blank-faced Koyuki -- who didn’t meet Kazuki’s eyes.

Kazuki was confused as he turned back towards the front.

Mio’s expression fell and her voice sounded unhappy as she said, “That’s all I have to say.” and sat back on her seat.

--After this, the self-introduction continued without any strange events.

Because Mio had said her hobbies and speciality, the classmates all copied her format as they introduced themselves.

The atmosphere gradually became relaxed, conversations were produced because of common hobbies or specialties.

Finally, it was Kazuki’s turn.

“I am Kenshi Kazuki. Although I am currently E-Ranked, I will work hard! My hobbies are training, and cooking.”

A lot of his classmates were surprised. Not many of the males enjoyed things like cooking.

“My speciality is swordsmanship.”

“Kenshi. In the Magic Division, Sword Skills aren’t considered important. This is a place where Magic elites gather, most of whom look down on swords and other cold weapons. Perhaps you feel that it’s impossible to accept this, but it is truly like this.” Elizabeth spoke up, her voice seemed strangely nostalgic.

Kazuki sat down again.

Mio stared at Kazuki without looking away. However, when her eyes met his, she immediately looked sad and turned to face the front of the room again.

...

Kazuki never understood why sword skills were looked down on. Even though Summoning Magic was powerful, the chants could take quite a long time to complete.

If a Summoner could defend themselves while chanting…Knights would lose their purpose.

“Compared to me, who has a greater amount Magic Power only because I was born this way, I feel like skills with weapons that has been honed through extreme effort are more worthy of respect.”

After hearing these encouraging words, Kazuki felt surprised and looked back. He noticed that Koyuki had stood up.

“...Your circumstances do not matter to me. --I am Hiakari Koyuki. No hobbies or speciality. Finished.”

After hearing this strange self-introduction, some of the students became noisy again.

Kazuki stared at her, feeling astonished.

Koyuki, who had sat down with a blank expression, showed some emotion and frowned slightly, “As I said, please turn your head away. Don’t look over here.”
