Chapter 9: Book 1 – Chapter 9

In order to let everybody -- new students and Student Council Members -- meet each other, the residents of the Witches’ House gathered together in the living room on the first floor.

 

Kazuki, Mio, Koyuki, Kaguya, and Lemi, the five of them sat on the chairs situated around the table.

 

“The Vice President is currently out on a ‘Quest’, so let’s wait for her for a while. As you have seen on TV, the matter about Illegal Magic Users’ hunting those with Stigmas has been on going. But, what the TV hasn’t shown, is that it has been even less peaceful than what the government want you to believe.” Kaguya said, leaning on the table.

 

“What is a Quest?”

 

When Kazuki asked this, Mio showed an expression of disbelief.

 

“Hey, E-Rank. You didn’t listen to the explanations?”

 

At that time, his head had been filled with worries about having his magic sealed and being imprisoned by the government…so he had trouble listening.

 

“Students of the Magic Division go to a place called the ‘Guild’ and get ‘Quests’ to help the Knights. The students form groups and work together to eliminate Monsters, go out and investigate Corrupted Zones, capture Illegal Magic Users, etc. They can select difficult quests to increase their own Rank.” Kaguya explained calmly, “There is also the ‘Duel’. Competitions between students, to both demonstrate their training and any power that they have gained, along with changing their ranks.”

 

“Using Ranks as an excuse to make trouble is a very stupid thing.” Koyuki quietly whispered.

 

“Koyuki, it feels like you are very familiar with this place. Is this your first time coming here?” Mio looked at the other girl.

 

“No, I was here last year.”

 

“Because her inborn Magic Power was unusually enormous, it was obvious that Koyuki would obtain an Enigma; so, during her middle-school period, she began living at this academy. The Student Council received an order from the teachers there, to take care of her.”

 

“Kaguya is a second year student right? Are there no third year students?” Kazuki asked, realizing that he hadn’t seen any students that looked older than Kaguya.

 

“It seems that you really weren’t listening at the briefing. Once you reach third year, you can take an internship with a squadron of Knights for life training.” Kaguya respond.

 

“...It can’t be helped. During the briefing, I was worried about my own future.” Kazuki answered, feeling his cheeks heating.

 

He glanced over at Leme, who was sitting next to him. When she noticed his gaze--

 

“It’s okay.” She said quietly, grabbing and holding Kazuki’s hand under the table.

 

This action confused him -- was she trying to encourage him.

 

…

 

“I’m back.” Another voice came from the entrance.

 

“Ah, Hikaru seems to be back. She is the Vice President of the Student Council. Hikaru, come to the living room for a bit!” Kaguya shouted the final sentence.

 

“Oh, the first years are here? I hope I haven’t made you wait for a long time, new students!”

 

The girl who opened the door had short hair, her face was more androgynous than typically beautiful; so a lot of people would mistake her for a guy, until she spoke -- or they saw her shapely body and chest that was just large enough to make her shirt noticeably bulge.

 

She placed her lugged down and looked around the room.

 

However, when her eyes met Kazuki’s, she moved at amazing speed and hid behind Kaguya, “A boy?! Why is there a boy here?!”

“Sorry. This child isn’t used to dealing with boys…she had bad experiences with the guys in her life, including her father.” Kaguya explained with a sad expression and a sigh, “So, her mother raised her.”

 

“A-Also because I went to an all-girl school from kindergarten, and I only work with other women…I don’t have experience with boys…”

 

She stuck her head out from behind Kaguya and peeked at Kazuki, sweat was visible on her forehead.

 

“But, I don’t know why people seem to act like I am a guy. In order to respond, I often try hard and act like they would expect...” The girl said confidently, before her expression became worried again, “A real boy is here, living with us…my heart is beating too quickly…So scary.”

 

 

“Anyway, you have to stand up and properly introduce yourself.” Kaguya said with a sad smile, stepping to the side.

 

The girl let out a strange noise, obvious fighting the urge to hide behind Kaguya again, before speaking, “I didn’t expect a first year Student Council Trainee to actually be a boy. M, My name is Hoshikaze Hikaru. P, Pleased to meet you.”

 

These people are the roommates of my new life? It feels that they are all strange people…

 

“I see. Fufufu, interesting. A group worth of contracting…” Leme whispered rather suspicious words from beside Kazuki.

 

“However, it’s fine! I will absolutely not reject my cute junior because he is a boy! I will treat you as the same sex, and be more casual, be friendly with each other!” Hikaru delivered a proud declaration.

 

But, as soon as her eyes met Kazuki’s -- she immediately covered her face with her hands.

 

“Uuu…P, Please do not look at me like this…”

 

Perhaps she is a somewhat cute person, Kazuki thought.

 

“Right, right, Kaguya. After I finished the quest, I brought a lot of snacks back!” Hikaru declared.

 

“Great! Then next off, let’s hold a welcoming party!” Kaguya let out a cheer.

It was currently 8PM -- the time to eat dinner -- yet the table was filled with all kinds of snacks. From chips, to chocolates, to pastries, there was a large pile.

 

“Fufufu, being able to eat this many snacks, am I currently dreaming?” Kaguya leaned forwards, a look of hunger in her eyes. “No, I can’t, this food is seriously imbalanced in nutrition and make me gain weight…”

 

Noticing the look on Kazuki’s face, Kaguya spoke again, “A party is like this! Okay, A--hhh.”

 

She suddenly picked up a small, sweet biscuit and tried to feed him.

 

Kazuki, unsure of how to react, gently pushed away her hand.

 

“A--hh was rejected by a boy?! This is against etiquette!”

 

Ignoring this, Hiraku spoke, “Well then, everybody, did you fill your drinks?”

 

She had poured soft drinks into cups and personally gave them to everybody -- well, she carefully slid it over to Kazuki, instantly jerking her hand back as soon as his moved.

 

…

 

The welcome party continued late into the night.
