When my breakfast finished, it was likely to be three in the morning. To people of my culture, four in the morning is similar to seven. By the time the sun is set, people would have prepared to get inside their blanket already. The people in the city must have already woken up by now. Taking into account the time of travel, I rest for a bit then get ready to go.
After one full day of eating, resting, and practising, I gauged the current strength of this body. I am unsure how old this girl is. My guess is around eight. It could be nine if she has been malnourished for a long time. Anyway, she is shorter than I was when I was eight. If I use my eight-year-old self as the base for comparison, this body is barely a fifth of my strength. For this reason, I only carry two stacks of wood to sell. The two stacks are actually only one third the volume of the wood I used to carry to sell in my previous life.
Since the door isn’t capable of being locked from the outside, I took all precious belongings with me. It’s no trouble for me because after combing through the hut, only a jade piece inside the wardrobe is of any value. This jade was placed on top of an old letter. Apparently, it’s a promised jade. The previous owner of this body is supposed to marry a young master in Moon City. There are still many years till that supposed marriage so I guess that can wait.
Inside the city, I choose the small streets and begin advertising. “Firewood! Anyone, firewood?”
My wood is just branches that I broke or collected yesterday. Neat stacks of wood usually fetch a better price and are more appealing to rich households.
It’s still early in the morning. Most people should be preparing for the day in their house, so the street was all mine.
By the second street, my first stack was gone. A house opened their door. The pompous middle-age lady wanted both stacks for ten coins which I promptly refused. I told her I could only sell one because the second one is for another house that asked me to deliver beforehand.
It was a lie of course. I prepared two stacks of wood because I don’t know the money and pricing in this world. I need to sell the same amount in two different places to know good deal from bad deal.
She kept pestering me to sell all my wood with her high-and-mighty attitude. Failing to change my mind, she annoyedly settled with four coins for the stack. She made excuses for her price but I paid no mind to remember. I was in no mood to deal with her pretentious behaviors. These people try their best to appear virtuous even when no one is there for them to show off.
I check the coins. They are dirty. Two of them are bent. One even has a crack. For a house as decorated as her, one would expect better.
The second stack, I decided to sell in a different neighborhood. The nice auntie paid me eleven coins. Apparently, she knew me. I believe at least one or two coins from the eleven she gave is out of sympathy.

More important than the coins, thanks to her, I knew the name of this body, Yun (cloud) An (peaceful, tranquillity). This combines with the family name mentioned in the letter makes my full name to be Dong Yun An. Considering my personality and history, I think I will have to choose a more fitting name. More importantly, Dong Yun An no longer exists.
Moving to the main street, I see a bun cart.
Looking at my poor appearance, he scoffed. “I am trying to sell here. Get lost.”
“Uncle. How much is a mantou (similar to bun but has no fillings)?”
Somewhat surprised by my words, he answered. “One big coin.”
I don’t know how many coins make a big coin but I can always try. “I have fifteen coins”. I open my palms.
He is visibly annoyed with the money. “You damn kid! I sell whole mantou, not half.” He raises his hand. “Get lost!”
I dash from the scene without looking back.
It’s typical for the sellers to be pissed if you make a hard bargain to them in the early of the day. They consider it bad omen since a bad start is synonymous to a bad day.
It’s a bit inconsiderate of me but I had to. It provides me with good information. Apparently, thirty coins make a big coin. To think that four stacks of wood amount to a single mantou…
Loitering around the city won’t do any good. I have to prepare for the next day.
