“It’s so busy!” Morgana exclaimed, eyes wide. “I looked out your window, but I had no idea.”

Liz’s window pointed out into an alleyway, so not much could be made out. Morgana had commented on the ‘tall buildings’ and ‘more people’, but she’d been greatly unprepared for the reality of New Staes. As the most populous city in the country, cram-packed with skyscrapers, it was a shock even to people of modern-times if they were visiting from rural areas, or even regular cities.

“It’s certainly that,” Liz said.

She’d always liked New Staes. She’d lived on the outskirts, in the suburbs, for most of her life. It wasn’t until she’d gone to college that she’d moved into the city proper, sandwiched by fifty-story high rises. She preferred it. It was easy to lose herself in the crowd—anonymity gained by the sheer throngs of people. It was also why Liz had emphasized Morgana needed to stay close; getting lost was a real threat, especially as a newcomer to New Staes. Much less as a newcomer to the twenty-first century.

Morgana stayed pressed into Liz’s side as they advanced through the streets, clinging to her like an over-affectionate girlfriend. Which, Liz guessed, was close to the truth of the matter, for a strange interpretation. Nobody paid them attention, but Liz’s face burned anyway. At least she had her hoodie. Draped in her big, over-sized fabric shield, she felt safe from prying eyes, judgmental attentions. There was a reason it was her favorite.

As Liz had expected her to, Morgana’s eyes scanned around the crowded streets, the slow-moving vehicles, the traffic signals, the glass skyscrapers, and the other hundred fascinations of modern life in a big city. Liz was impressed she didn’t go spouting off a million questions—she refrained, instead absorbing the alien sight and satiating herself with the wonder of it. Maybe having answers would ruin the amazement. Maybe she was just being practical. Liz could hardly guess the thought processes of a literal demon.

Supermarkets weren’t as common in the heart of New Staes as the suburbs. Every square foot cost ten times, a hundred, what it might elsewhere. But they still existed; six blocks of bustle later, Liz led Morgan into an air-conditioned building.

Chalk and ink. While not specialty items, exactly, they weren’t the most common purchases, either. Did they even sell inkwells, anymore? The kind you dipped quills into? Well … yeah. For fountain pens and such. But at a supermarket? It might or might not be in stock. They could get creative and pour ink out of normal pens, so worst case scenario, they could improvise.

“I think I might have understated it,” Morgana said quietly. “A lot hasn’t changed. Everything has.”

“We’ve made some advancements over the years,” Liz said. She wasn’t sure what else to say. Morgana didn’t sound upset, or anything, but digesting the new world she’d found herself in wasn’t happening completely in stride. “Once we get back, you can ask me anything.”

Morgana was helping Liz navigate her new life—of the Darker World, and her … new powers—so it was only fair Liz returned the favor. She wasn’t now because they were in public; and hadn’t before, because they had more important things to discuss. But once they had some time to think, and quiet, they’d get each other caught up.

As Liz suspected, chalk was the easy find. A packet of twelve cost three bucks, which was cheaper than she’d expected. The ink was trickier. Fortunately, she didn’t have to resort to hacking open pens; she found a short section of a shelf dedicated to fountain pens, and picked out a bottle of ink, there.

“Do you need a pen, too?”

“I’ll use my fingers,” Morgana said. “But two wells to be safe.”

At ten bucks each, Liz wrinkled her nose. But it needed to be done. Still—twenty bucks. Liz was on a budget. Specifically, her parents’ budget; she didn’t have a job. Liz wasn’t sure if they checked her monthly spending, but she assumed they did. She’d have to come up with an excuse.

Liz had the items rung up and paid. Morgana watched the process with interest. The cashier watched her and Morgana with interest, too, for a different reason—Morgana was as clingy as since they’d left. Liz tried not to blush too badly. She only stuttered a few times.

“You’re seriously cute, you know that?” Morgana asked on the way out.

Liz ignored her.

“It’ll do wonders for some people,” she continued. “You have these big brown eyes, and timid demeanor, that just screams, ‘ravish me, Daddy’.”

Liz extra ignored her.

“But you’ll have to figure out some confidence, too. Our job’s all about filling whatever role we need. I’ll help you get used to it, don’t worry.”

During the trip back to her apartment, the reality of the situation started to settle in—it’d been lingering in the background, somehow. But now that they had their supplies, and Morgana would be starting the ritual sooner rather than later, Liz’s head started to spin.

Soon. By tonight, she’d have … magical powers. That would help her begin ‘extracting essence’ from her targets. Which would not only be … fun … but would make her stronger, somehow.

Magic. And sex. It was an auspicious pairing—maybe the most auspicious she could imagine to a desperately unfulfilled virgin. Liz’s new life loomed on the horizon. And while she had all sorts of anxieties about how she’d perform—what ‘finding a target’ might be like, and how poorly she might do—she somehow didn’t let the worry win. She’d figure it out. Morgana would help her.

With such potential gain on the horizon, even Liz couldn’t find it in herself to be scared.
