As I moved closer to have another a better view of this quote unquote thrilling chess match. I heard a student say something that caught my attention.
"I have 25 grade points on Yuu Kaneko beating the chess club president."
"Hell no. "Yuu Kaneko gets crushed easily within 20 moves," said another student.
Grade Points? Is that lingo for money or something?
As I pushed through the crowd, I found a space close to the match. Maybe it was a bit too close, but hey, I am already here.
The student council president, Yuu Kaneko, was black, and the chess club present played as white.
It was pretty much what I expected from a chess match, but Yuu Kaneko clearly had the upper hand with his deliberate moves. He seemed to be enjoying himself and taking the match slow. While his opponent seemed like he wanted to end the match as soon as possible,
Yuu moved another piece across, and a bead of sweat rolled down the face of the other person.
Finally, Yuu began to make some errors that caused the chess club president to catch up to him. He seemed smug about it, as if he was sure that he would get to a checkmate quickly.
Something did feel off, as if Yuu was purposely making errors that would give the other person false hope. Is it a strategy or does he want to build him up to break him down?
The chess club president had Yuu on the ropes now, but he just slightly yawned a bit. Then he turned to face me.
"You there."
"Are you speaking to me?"
"Yes," My question to you is, what will be the best course of action to take in order to avoid what is happening?"
I observed the pieces on the board and pointed to his black pawn.
"I would sacrifice my pawn to halt his advance and set up for a possible check in the next few moves."
The students started to murmur when they heard my answer.
Yuu said, "Sharp eye." and did just that.
A couple moves later, just like I predicted, he got a checkmate over his opponent.

Yuu got up from his seat and said, "Yuji, thanks for the match and better luck next time."
Yikes. It must be embarrassing for the chess club president to lose in that manner.
As the crowd began to disperse, Yuu Kaneko stopped me.
"Hey you."
"Uh yes."
"What's your name and which class are you from?"
"Yuki Amaya and Class 1-4"
Yuu paused and replied, "Hmm, class 1-4? I see you have your work cut out for you."
"What does that mean?"
Yuu brushed off my question and asked, "In chess you can sacrifice a piece without second thought, so can you do that in real life when something is on the line?"
I answered without hesitation, "I would find a way to win without sacrificing anyone or anything."
Yuu eyed me and said, "That type of thinking won't get you far here at all."
He then asked, "What if you had no choice but to sacrifice a piece?" What would you do?"
I pondered about it for a few moments and then answered, "I would sacrifice the piece that offers very little benefit in order to preserve the useful ones."
Yuu smiled and said, "I am loving the answers right now. However, doesn't that make you a bit of a hypocrite by going against the fact that you just said that you would find a way to win without discarding anyone or anything?"
I sighed, "I am just a mortal at the end of the day, not a God. So at times, I may have to go back on my word just a bit if it meant securing a path to victory."
"I'll be keeping a close eye on your class, Yuki Amaya. You guys may be the black horses for that year group."
Hmm, keeping a close eye on the class? First class 1-1's homeroom teacher, Miss Amane Hatake, and now the student council president? Is our class cursed or something?
