Cho had called me about a week later after our initial meeting to give me the name and address at the cabaret club she worked at.
"Cherī cherī?"
"Hai!", Cho exclaimed in her cute little anime voice.
"Wakatta, who do I ask for when I get there?"
I was a bit nervous since the area the club was located in had a bit of history to it, but then again, what do I got to lose?
"Ask for Todoroki, and let him know I sent you."
"Wakatta. Cho-san, arigatōgozaimasu."
"Dōitashimashite Tabi-san!"
Even though I may not have sounded that thrilled, I still felt really grateful towards Cho for looking out for me. She seemed to be the only friend I had here, although she might not have thought the same thing, I still really appreciated the gesture.
I seriously need to get out more - finding the club proved to be difficult work because I still could not read Kanji very well. My co-workers always invited me out, but I always said I had plans or just tried to avoid them before they would ask.
The club wasn't too far from where I lived. It was only about a 30 minute train ride from my flat to the club, and it was still located in Shinjuku City, except that it was located in the Kabukicho district. I had heard a lot of rumors about the Kabukicho district, one being that it was largely known for the amount of clubs, bars, and restaurants. On the other hand, there is a large presence of Yakuza activities going on in the area too. At least that's what I had heard.
After wandering around aimlessly, Google maps told me I had arrived. It looked like the club might have been closed, but Cho said they don't open until 5:00 and it was only 4:30. There I could see a man standing outside of the venue, smoking a cigarette. He was kind of odd looking because it looks like he might have been in his 50s, maybe even his 60s. That wasn't the odd part though, his hair was dyed a pastel purple, with streaks of blonde in it. He also had a rather large beer belly and had a few tattoos on his right arm and hand.
Before I could continue with my thoughts, I was interrupted by the booming sound of his voice.
"Are you looking for someone?", I could tell that his English wasn't that great so I knew this conversation was going to be a bit difficult for both of us.
"Hai, Todoroki ase kō o sagashiteimasu."

"Dare ga shiritaidesu ka?"That whole conversation was such a blur. I'm not even sure if he knew what he was hiring me for, but it seems as though I got the job and my first day of work starts next Friday.

This place is wild! I've been working at Cherī cherī for about a month now, and it's like being in another universe. This is just talking about the club itself, don't even get me started on the neighborhood the club is located in. If I had to compare Kabukicho to another place it would probably be Las Vegas. This part of Tokyo does not sleep, it always smells like cigarettes, and you are never sure if you're going to get mugged or not.
Now when Cho had told me she worked at a cabaret club, I assumed she was a dancer, and it turns out I was completely wrong about that. Between The States and Japan, a cabaret club has a much more different meaning. It turns out that Cho is actually a hostess, this made more sense to me now since I did not pin her for being a dancer.
Walking along the streets to the side of any central city area in Japan, you're more than likely to come across signage with glam photos of men and women. These are called 'host club' and 'kyabakura' which is short for 'cabaret club'. Host clubs cater to female customers where kyabakura caters to male customers. Upon arrival, you'll be given a menu and choose which man, or woman, you would like to converse with that evening. You'll choose your pick, if available, you'll be seated with them. To usher in, the customer must first purchase a drink for yourself and your host or hostess.
During your time you will drink and converse with your host or hostess flirtatiously, but that's it. There's no touching allowed, and depending on the establishment, you will be banned if you think about being physical with the host or hostess. Now I had heard that some clubs worked as undercover prostitution ring and when I had asked Cho if this place was one of them, she grabbed my shoulders, to face her directly, and bursted out with a "No!". I never brought it up to her again.
Ever since I started working here, I feel as though I've become a bit more social. Maybe it's because of all the girls that I meet and the small talk we have while I do their makeup. I usually just stay in the back where they get ready and never go out into the front. I don't think Todoroki wants me to go out to the front either since I am a foreigner, and it would probably be weird for the customers to see a small pasty white girl dressed up like they might be homeless too. Overall, after the first month of working here it really hasn't been too bad. I really only see the hostesses and Todoroki and that's pretty much it, and yet that was soon going to change. My whole world was about to shatter and I didn't even know it.
