In the past few weeks Grace and I had opted to start making some new friends by joining some clubs. Our schedules weren’t as packed as we had thought they would be at the beginning of the semester and we both had plenty of extra time in the afternoons after class. The first club we had joined together because it was something we both had in common: We were both gay. Okay not gay but bisexual, but we both agreed it was more fun to see peoples reactions when we said we were gay. We joined a club called Gender Sexuality Alliance/ Gay Straight Alliance (I’d heard it been referenced as both before so we just called it GSA.)

At the first GSA meeting we had met a new rag-tag group of people that seemed to just be the misfits of the school. Not misfits in a bad way though, I had actually thought everyone in the group was pretty nice, even with their varying forms of quirkiness.

The group was lead by a girl named Holly who identified as “the mom of the group,” and I can see why. She was a curvy girl with dark hair that reached just past her shoulders who wore a dress and a lot of makeup. She was really pretty but also really sweet and understanding. She made it very clear that as the leader of the club we should come to her with any problems that ever occurred regarding GSA or any other subject.

Aside from Holly, the group consisted of about 8 other people who were the “regulars.” Grace and I  had been tagged as the “Baby Freshmen” after just the first meeting and were the newest members to join the club. Kellin was the vice president and often went by just Kel. They identified as nonbianry and went by they/them pronouns. Spence was a sophomore with a raging IDGAF attitude. He was very open about the fact that he was a trans man who came from a small town that made it very hard to identify in the way he wanted to. There was a guy named Logan who was from the U.K. and had a British accent. He was straight, but he wanted to learn more about different gender and sexuality identifications so he could learn politically correct introductions for his future as film maker. Up until that point I didn’t think anyone straight would join GSA, but I thought It was cool that he had. A senior named Dawn had barely spoken the entire time but when thy did the room erupted in laughter after each funny remark they had made. Dawn had also identified as nonbianry and used they/them pronouns. They had a contagious and distinctive laugh that just seemed to make everyone smile. In the corner sat a little red-haired man named Eric who was from Ireland. He was gay, but still kind of closeted to everyone except the people in the room. And lastly there was Sean, the guy who had helped me move into my dorm the first day. He was also straight, but said he just loved being supportive of his friends that were in the club.

And just like that we all clicked and became a new group of besties who tackled tough gay issues during meeting times and tough college issues in our spare time. The best part of being in GSA was not only having friends from 1-2 on Mondays and Thursdays but also having friends to always sit with in the Square or at dinner or do homework with. We instantly all just became so relevant in each others lives. Everyone had their own interesting and unique personality that complimented the others so well. It was the most diverse group of friends I had ever been in and I loved every second of it.

After about a months worth of GSA meetings I had found out about another club called South Redwood Activities Group (everyone just called it S-RAG,) a club dedicated to advertising and hosting activities for the students at the university. A few members of GSA were looking for someone to make posters to hang up around campus and I, with very minimal experience in graphic design but a ton of creativity, offered to take that spot on the team. I loved making posters and getting to see my artwork hang around campus. Whenever Grace and I would walk past one I loudly announced “I MADE THAT!” in a purposefully annoying tone.

So I had made new friends and was getting to know “my people” at the school. Things were looking up from the grim annoyance of only knowing my roommate for like, two months, but I still didn’t have any friends of just my own, I shared them all with Grace. We loved that we had a connection with other friends now, but we both knew we needed to branch out from each other at some point. As for now though, we focused on having fun with the friends we had.
