Chapter 8: Volume 1—Chapter 8—Dark Tree Dungeon

I hunted three giant pigs, so it didn't take as long as I had expected.

It's most likely because I had the advantage of using the sky as my attack method.

I was still not close enough to my goal, and it tired me out hunting three of those beasts.

I came to realize that I did not have enough stamina.

I need the stamina to use my wings for a long time if I wish to be able to fly for long periods. 

I should continue on foot to preserve my flight stamina for now.

I went deeper into the forest to find more monsters, but I learned there weren't many monsters close to the Orc Village.

I came across a large tree that grew by itself in the middle of a bunch of rocks surrounding it.

There was something odd about the tree, so I drew closer to get a closer look.

Something beneath my feet softened and crumbled in an instant.

I was now floating a couple of feet above the hole, "that was a close call." I told myself while I looked inside.

 

Evilyn: [Underground Dungeon discovered. If the host raids this dungeon, there will be a great reward.]

 

I can't believe I stumbled upon a dungeon!

I thought about the consequences of entering it. Even so, I should be able to raid it.

But what if it's dangerous? I'm not a high enough level to enter a dungeon since that could be the end of yet another unsatisfactory death.

I flew closer to the hole to peer into the darkness.

Thanks to my bat vision, I could make out a bit of the interior of the underground dungeon below.

Evilyn, what's the name of this dungeon?

If I had the appraiser's ability, I could figure out the dungeon's level. 

I flew down into the dungeon until I reached solid ground.

Once I landed, I looked above to see how far I had been from the ground and the hole I had entered.

It would have been a painful fall had I not been lucky enough to have wings.

Dark Tree Dungeon Quest

The host has entered an ancient Tomb of a Great Mage!

Dungeon Level: 5

 

Dungeon Tasks:

1. Defeat the monsters
2. Discover the tomb's secrets
3. Defeat the Boss

Reward:

1. Whatever the Dungeon offers
2. Additional Reward from the System

Penalty:

1. Death

 

 

It's another quest! There's no way I would refuse! Despite the death penalty, I'm excited to see this dungeon.

Along the walls were ancient markings and strange stone statues of what looked like griffons.

Between the statues was a tall and decorated door made of stone.

I peered closer at the ancient markings written below one of the griffon statues.

These markings.

If I rearrange some of them and read them, "It's in Japanese." I muttered.

Why would there be lettering from Japan in a dungeon like this?

Strange.

After reading the words on the statue, the stone doors began to open.

I entered and jumped when the door closed tightly shut behind me.

The room I stood in had traps that led to the other side, where another door led out.

Below the thin-stone path before me, there was a pool of murky blue water. 

Will I be able to make it across safely?

It's not falling I'm afraid of but the many dangerous traps that lie ahead.

From swinging hammers, bladed saws sticking from the ground, and spiked balls. 

It's a danger zone that kills anyone that crosses if not careful.

I took a deep breath and faced the first trap, "here goes nothing."

The first dangerous trap I encountered was two large blades shaped like swords coming from both directions.

They were moving from one side to the other at a speed that normal people would have trouble following.

It's not like a normal being couldn't cross the threshold, but a matter of calculation and luck on that person's side.

If I focus hard enough, I can pinpoint the movement of where the blades begin and end.

I managed to get past them but at the cost of losing a strand of hair.

I leaned down to take deep breaths and a sigh of relief.

If I had been a second too early, just thinking about my body becoming two worries me.

If that wasn't all, I now had to worry about the other traps ahead of me.

An hour went by when I finally reached the door to the other side.

I won't look back because there was no way I'd want to go through that again!

I pushed through the door and was now in a new room.

There appeared to be no exits in sight.

Instead, I was in a room with walls made of hard rock.

I felt that I was about to encounter a trial or maybe a boss of some kind.

A hidden door opened and revealed a shadow that was exiting from within.

I waited at the sound of footsteps until a person came into view.

Not particularly a person, if I had to say what kind of thing it was, I wouldn't have an answer.

"Greetings, young miss. I am the butler of this tomb, Regin," the thing greeted with a short bow.

He peeked up at the person chosen by his master and was greatly disappointed.

Was this monster supposed to be a time traveler? How weak.

"May I ask what kind of monster you are?" I asked.

The thing looked taken aback by my question.

"I am not a monster but a Tren," he says discerningly.

I looked at the short ears down to his face shaped like a walrus, and he even had tusks!

A Tren? Is that supposed to mean something to me?

 

Evilyn: [Tren: Ancient Merfolk that went extinct billions of years ago. Because many don't know of their existence, those that remain, stay hidden.]

 

I learn new things every day. 

To think I'd meet an Ancient being. It has barely been two weeks since I entered this world as a bat!

The Tren raises its head to make eye contact, "the young miss has not only evolved once but also became a Kin of a high elf. While that is interesting enough, I still don't see much potential." He mutters.

I wasn't sure what it was talking about and could tell something big was happening.

The Tren sighs, "Oh well, I'm sure my master saw something of use. We will now begin the trial."

"It's as I thought. " I say.
