Dairon passed the letter to her and she placed her cup down to take it with a frown. She skimmed through the contents and looked up. "King Rian wants to meet both of us tomorrow."
He didn't look fazed. "Okay. I can postpone the plans I had for tomorrow.
Thinking that he might have forgotten, she gave a subtle reminder. "I think it's about what happened to Pearl."
His expression didn't change in the slightest as he nodded.
Her mouth opened but she didn't know what to say. How could he be so indifferent about it? If they were being summoned, it was definitely because King Rian suspected him too.
Since it didn't faze him, she didn't let it faze her either. Maybe he had a plan to wiggle out. Or maybe he was confident that he would not be punished. When they finished breakfast, Dairon said that he had something to do and disappeared into the sea. She glanced at the calm sea after his departure and wondered what he was up to.
He had been acting strange lately. Taking a deep breath, she hoped that everything was okay with him as she went to the academy.
She managed to be late despite having woken up earlier than usual. It was an indoor lesson so she shuffled to her seat just as Scarlet arrived.
"I do not tolerate tardiness." She scowled, pointing Jasmine out even though the latter had only been a minute or two late.
Jasmine smiled as though she had not just been chided. "I'm sorry."
All the time she spent in the realm of sloths had not been useless. She had spent some time figuring out how to deal with Scarlet and not starting a losing battle against her was the most important part of it. Scarlet would try to paint a bad image of her by all means to make King Rian ultimately hate her.
She didn't care about King Rian's favor but she was not going to sit around and watch her reputation go down the dumps.
Scarlet was taken aback by her apology. She huffed and focused most of her attention on the other trainees, including Xarz.
"In two days, I will send you all on missions to put everything you learnt into use. Before that, you should practice your flight skills. They will be useful."
Jasmine looked around and noticed that all the trainees had wings. Some of them had retracted theirs but since she was sitting at the back, she noticed the faint double lines on their backs which must be where their wings were. Scarlet was purposefully planning to send them on missions that would require them to fly when she couldn't.
She let out a low chuckle. "Thanks for the tip, Goddess Scarlet. We will practice hard."
The class roared in laughter but that did the trick. They started chatting among themselves in hushed tones and asking whether Scarlet was deliberately bullying the new trainee.
A small ball of paper landed on her desk and when she unfolded it, she found that it was a note from Xarz. She smiled as she secretly read it. [If you don't have wings, I can lend you mine. I don't know if that is possible but I'll ask Lord Bardumond when I see him.]
He was so cute.
She felt a gaze on her and tilted her head to find him staring at her in anticipation, waiting for a reply. She responded by blowing him a kiss.
The little god blushed and looked away for a few heartbeats, before another note came flying to her desk.
[Do you want to visit the garden together later? I heard my friends say that new flowers have been planted.]
She had to press her hand against her mouth to stop herself from laughing.
She was here on a mission but Xarz needed to listen to whatever Scarlet was going on about, so she stopped responding to him. The petty goddess didn't stop picking on her. "Jasmine, did you read the books I asked you to read?"
"I did."
Scarlet almost rolled her eyes in disdain. It was impossible to read all of them in a fortnight, let alone a day. She had deliberately chosen the most difficult ones and from her memory of Jasmine's last life, she didn't like things that bored her such as reading. It had been a trap all along.

"You don't know the language of the gods. You only arrived a month ago. How can you read books you don't understand?" She pointed it out in everyone's presence so they would know that she was lying.
Jasmine leaned her head against the backrest of the chair. "Magic? Just kidding. But it did feel like magic. I understood the content despite not knowing the language." She sat up straight and exaggerated dramatically. "In fact, the content of those books felt so familiar. It's almost as if I read it in my past life. Do you think there's a chance I was reborn and I know the language of gods because I remember it from my past life?"
The trainees roared in laughter and treated her words as a joke, but Scarlet gritted her teeth.
She was proud of her bluff. When Scarlet asked her countless questions from the books to expose her, she answered them smoothly and asked, "You knew that I haven't learnt the language of gods but still gave me an extra long list of books in this language? How was I supposed to read them?"
"I didn't say you couldn't ask for help from that cursed fish whose island you are living on." She shirked responsibility smoothly.
Jasmine shrugged. It wouldn't do much anyway. "Do you think it's okay to let us know about our missions beforehand?"
"How impatient. Is that something you learnt from the human realm?" Scarlet looked annoyed. "It's not surprising. Humans are uncultured."
"Your missions will be sent to you this evening, just in case you say that I didn't give you enough time to prepare."
Without waiting for Jasmine to make another insane remark, she set them up to spar with one another. They gathered at the back of the building in the immense field and waited for her to pair them up. The number of trainees was odd since Jasmine had joined the class.
She would have used the chance to fake an accident and hurt her but that would be too obvious. So, after announcing that she would spar with Xarz, she deliberately had Jasmine spar with Harlyn, her best trainee who was also a demigod of war.
Her aim was to make Harlyn teach her a lesson because he disdained arrogant demigoddesses. She was waiting to see Jasmine break down in tears, which was why she dropped her sword when she saw them fighting almost neck to neck. Her speed was enough to cover up for her skill which was elementary in comparison with Harlyn's.
Once in a while Jasmine would almost lose, but Harlyn would pause and tell her what she was doing wrong. Jasmine would then retreat and try to do it the right way.
This familiar scene made her chest heave as she broke in cold sweat.
"Goddess Scarlet, are you alright?" Xarz asked. "I'm sorry. I didn't mean to use too much force."
"It's not you. I'm just tired." She picked her sword and flew away before anyone could ask anything.
"Does that mean we are done?" Jasmine leapt away from Harlyn and asked.
"I think so." He looked at the other trainees who had stopped sparring and were gathering their belongings to leave. He turned to look at Jasmine who looked ready to leave.
"Spar again later?"
"Sure." She wouldn't say no to a good fight.
He smiled and picked up her hair tie which she had gotten rid of halfway through their spar. "Don't worry about Goddess Scarlet. She seems to have everything against goddesses close to Lord Blaze."
"I'm not close to Lord Blaze." She groaned. He had forcefully adopted her but still.
"You are his daughter." Harlyn pointed out like it should mean something. When he saw her confused face, he explained. "I don't think she actually hates you for you. It's likely because her hatred for Goddess Lolanthe is rubbing off on you. Because you are Goddess Lolanthe's daughter and just happen to be an earth demigoddess."
She smiled in defeat. Why was she paying for a grudge that wasn't even aimed at her?
Harlyn leaned in and lowered his voice. "Let me tell you a secret. Goddess Scarlet did something unforgivable eight hundred years ago. She thinks no one knows."
"What did she do?" She was interested.
Before he could respond, Xarz slotted himself between them. He grabbed Jasmine's hand possessively and glared at Harlyn. It looked comical with his height. He could barely reach Harlyn's ribs, yet he glared at him and told him off. "Jasmine is mine. Stay away from her, Harlyn!"
