"Catalyah's pegasus. You tamed it." Dairon cupped her face with a smile.
Her eyes searched his. She didn't know what she was looking for but she didn't find it. All she could see was that Dairon was proud of her for taming the pegasus which apparently, had only ever acknowledged one master—Catalyah.
"What did you name him?" He asked curiously.
"Phoenix." She stepped back to the pegasus and rubbed its neck fondly. It neighed into her arm and wiggled its head happily.
"It's a fitting name." He stepped closer and the pegasus moved to kick him.
"Don't you dare!" He growled at it, and the pegasus neighed sadly into Jasmine's arms.
She chuckled and glared at him. "Don't scare him." When she let go, Phoenix bowed and flew away.
She stepped forward and looked up to Blaze.
"Jas," He called softly.
"Father."
Blaze's eyes went wide with shock. "What did you just say?"
She smiled and tiptoed to kiss his cheek. "Thank you, father."
Blaze pulled her into a tight hug, his eyes watering. It finally happened! His daughter finally called him father!
"I was too blind to see it before." She whispered against his shoulder. "I thought you only wanted to hurt me. I see it now. You just have a twisted way of expressing love."
"I love you." Blaze closed his eyes, feeling like a piece of him that had been lost was finally back. When she pulled out of the hug, he cupped her face. "I gave in to everything Catalyah wanted. Whether it was regarding her apprenticeship with King Rian, the friends she wanted to keep or decisions regarding her mate. Everything she ever suggested. You name it, I agreed with it."
"You don't have to." She muttered. It was clear in his eyes just how much the topic hurt him.
"It's okay." He whispered. "I was against the decisions she made that led to the war. I should have adamantly said no. But the moment I saw the emptiness in her eyes, I agreed. It's that moment that I regret the most.
On the other hand, I didn't give Narilia as much credit as she deserved. Unlike Catalyah, she was stubborn and rebellious. I made all the decisions that mattered for her, thinking that I was protecting her. I lost her too. Heck, I even lost Bardumond when I thought I was doing my best. He is still with me but I know I ruined him. Just for one stupid mistake I made—arranging his marriage. The repercussions broke his heart beyond repair."
His body trembled with grief. "I don't know how to be a father anymore, Jas."
"You're doing your best. That is all that matters." Her eyes stung.
"Maybe you should ask Harry to teach you how to be a father instead of whining about it." Dairon ruined the moment with a scoff.
Blaze glared at him from over Jasmine's shoulder. "Maybe you should get a partner and have kids before you start talking about fatherhood."
"Of course." Dairon scoffed. "Get your hands off my partner, firefly."
"You cursed..!"
"How about you pause your ridiculous fight?" Jasmine forced a smile, upset that she had to stop yet another childish fight. Why was everyone around her fighting?
Lolanthe pulled Jasmine into her arms. "Does that mean you acknowledge me as your mother?" She asked.
Jasmine smiled. "I never had anything against you."
In relief, Lolanthe hugged her tightly. "But what about Sophie and Harry?"
She pulled away gently. "That's alright. I still love them. In the mortal world, Sophie, Harry and Dahlia are my family while in the realm of immortals, you, Lord Blaze and Bardumond are my family."
"I'll soon surpass Harry." Blaze scoffed and she shook her head. Was that up for competition too?
"I'm going to see King Rian. I'm late for my meeting with him." She pulled away from Lolanthe and took Dairon's hand. "Are you coming with me?"
"Sure." He tightened his hand around hers. "See you never, firefly."
"For the first time I agree with you, cursed fish."
Jasmine slapped her forehead. These nicknames were as ridiculous as their rivalry.
…..
King Rian had been waiting for them so they were let in as soon as they arrived at the castle. She thought it would be just the three of them but when she arrived at King Rian's court, there were six other deities, most of whom she didn't want to see. Dylan, Nila, Marina and Scarlet. Everyone who was against Dairon was in the courtroom. The only one on Dairon's side was Bardumond, and Harlyn was either neutral or on Scarlet's side. They had just arrived but she knew that this was not going to end well.
"Jasmine cannot sit next to Dairon." Scarlet spoke up. "Who knows what he will whisper for her to say?"
She rolled her eyes. "If there is something dreadful that he can whisper to me, aren't you scared that he has already said it?"
"Jasmine, sit next to Nila." King Rian ordered.
She reluctantly relocated. She was not sitting between Dylan and Nila and it was more uncomfortable than she made it seem. Why would King Rian put her on the spot?
"Jasmine, I have a few questions for you." He said.
"Okay." She tried not to break into cold sweat even though she was sitting between two of her enemies.
"Where was Dairon three nights ago?" King Rian asked.
"In his mansion, on his island." She answered with ease.
"The whole night?" King Rian probed.
"Yes."
Dylan scoffed at her answer. "You know what he did and are covering up for him. How would you know where he was when you were asleep?"
She shrugged and faced the god who was trying to trap her by proving that she logically wouldn't know everything about that night. "Dairon and I were awake all night. We only went to sleep after sunrise."
"That's a lie." Scarlet retorted.
"Do you want to know what we were doing in his room all night? How shameless are you, to pry into the private lives of a demigod and demigoddess so much that you want to know what they do all night?" She asked, crossing her arms. Dairon chuckled under his breath while Scarlet's face reddened, and everyone in the courtroom gasped at her unfiltered statement.
"Since you know Dairon so well," Harlyn spoke up. "Do you know of any feud there was between him and goddess Pearl?"
"No." She lied naturally without flinching.
Marina glared at her. "There was and you know it! He threatened her at my tea party."
She raised an eyebrow in surprise. "Did such a thing really happen?" She looked up at King Rian. "King Rian, no such thing happened at her tea party. Dairon did not even stay for tea." She explained the ridiculous situation.
Seeing that King Rian looked like he believed her, Scarlet took out her orb and replayed the scene between Jasmine and Marina. "With all due respect, a demigoddess with such a violent character should not be trusted."
She glared at Scarlet and if she didn't get distracted by Nila's fidgeting beside her, Scarlet's head would be in flames.
"Do you have any other questions?" She asked and looked around at the deities. They didn't respond within three seconds so she grabbed the chance.
"Goddess Scarlet, I would like to know why you were certain that Dairon was the culprit." She demanded.
Since they had interrogated her, it was only fair for her to demand answers.
"No one knows the human realm more than he does and it just so happened that it was where Pearl was last seen." Scarlet answered.
She looked around at the deities and then at Dairon. This was not an interrogation to expose a culprit or prove Dairon's innocence. It was a set up.
Nila's thoughts were clear for her to read, and she was waiting for the perfect chance to pin Dairon down. She would pin the crime on him whether or not he commited it and when he was at his lowest, she and Dylan would offer to help him out but in exchange, he would have to marry Marina.
What a deluded grandmother. She was so scheming it was nauseating.
She tried to read Dylan's mind. His thoughts were no different from Nila's. He was even more vicious, cursing his daughter for choosing a human out of all males. Marina's mind was full of methods she would use to win Dairon's heart after their marriage. What a disgusting family.
Harlyn's mind was blank, she couldn't read Dairon's, Bardumond's and King Rian's minds, and Scarlet was the most vicious. She had something that would incriminate Dairon and once she showed it to King Rian, there would be no need for an interrogatory meeting. He would be convicted and she would find a way to kill him, which would in turn kill her because they shared a soul.
How sinister.
She was about to speak when she finally caught a hint of King Rian's thoughts.
He is too dangerous.
She blinked and tried to make sense of it. Who did he think was dangerous?
