Her love? Jasmine stared at the two words in shock.

She was not entirely shocked by Catalyah's mention of her possible death because it was not a surprise but Dairon's response was the most unexpected thing that had happened in her life.

If Catalyah was his love, what about her? She had overheard deities say that they could only ever fall in love once. If Dairon was in love with Catalyah, what did that say about his feelings for her? Were they fake?

"But he said he loved me." She held her head between her hands and took deep breaths. She was driving herself crazy.

She burst into laughter after thinking through it for a while, and her tears came gushing out. What was she thinkig? How could anyone fall in love with her, a simple demigoddess who didn't even know her identity until she was a grown woman, when they were friends with the greatest goddess in the realm of immortals?

Alaina had told her that deities were often forgotten as if they didn't exist, soon after their demise. It had been eight hundred years since Catalyah died and she was still loved by everyone. How could she not think that Dairon could be one of her admirers?

Heck, from what she had read, he was not just one of her admirers. He was one of the males who were relentlessly in love with her! How could she not notice it from how bitter he looked the few times anyone had mentioned Catalyah's name in his presence? How could she not ask herself why Blaze and Dairon hated each other so much? Why did the feud between water and fire deities exist?

She laughed maniacally and forced the next page of the book open. Who complied these letters and enchanted them anyway?

That was not important. At least not as important as what she wanted to know. Was their relationship real?

The next page was a letter just like the ones before it.

[To the bearer of the five element scepter.

Unfortunately, I was not making fun of such a solemn matter and I don't know why I died either. All I know is that I did.

PS

I hope she's beautiful, to say the least.]

She burst out laughing and knew she was going crazy. She didn't dare to read Dairon's response. Would he say more must crap about dreading not being able to hold her? She couldn't take it so she skipped a few letters and stopped on another by Catalyah.

[To the bearer of the five element scepter.

The first, the second and I managed to set up a meeting with the king of the underworld. I will not be able to meet you until it's over.

I miss you, Catalyah.]

This time, she had a nagging feeling that she needed to know the response so she bit her bottom lip and opened it.

[If you don't stay away from the underworld, I may do something that could hurt both of us. Don't tempt me, Catalyah.]

It was a threat. It wasn't signed with any name but from the tone, she knew that it was Dairon's response. That, and the fact that the entire book she rewrote seemed to be all about the letters that Dairon and Catalyah sent each other.

[To the bearer of the five element scepter.

You wouldn't do something that would ruin me. I will be alright. This much I promise you, my love. If my end is near, I may as well use the rest of my life to do something useful. I hope you understand.

Your love, Catalyah.

PS. I saw an unsolved riddle in the future. The answer is the cause of my death. A fake deity and a traitor. Do you know who this is?]

"Scarlet." She whispered the answer before realizing that Scarlet was only a traitor. Who was the fake deity? She flipped to the next page.

[To the loveliest goddess.

I'm trying my best to understand why my mate has to hold the weight of all the gods on her shoulders. Of course, it's an easy feat. Don't be ridiculous. I'm not going to let you do this alone. See you on the Proconian Isles in a week, Catalyah.

I love you, Dairon.

PS. Just because I feel that way doesn't mean I'm giving in to your ridiculous whims.

PPS. The answer of your riddle… could it be the heiress from your future? I don't trust her or anyone who is trying to replace you.]

His response confirmed it. The traitor was Scarlet. She was certain because 'The Heiress' was a term used by deities to refer to Scarlet, sarcastically.

She read through the note again and once again saw the part she had tried to ignore. His mate.

The next three letters were a blur.

[Dairon,

I've been betrothed to the king of the underworld. I can't get to the Proconian Isles in a week but I'll be there in two.]

[To Dairon.

I found the missing piece of the puzzle. The traitor is Scarlet and the fake deity is Tolvethor. He is a demon in disguise and knows our weaknesses!]

She slumped against the wall and slid against it onto the floor, while the notebook fell out of her hands. His mate! Catalyah was his mate!

"What about me? If Catalyah was his mate then what am I?"

She looked up, her eyes filling with fire as she stormed out of her room. She stumbled into the library and looked at Sinos who was waiting for her.

"Beautiful Jas, you are finally here!" He stopped flapping his wings and turned to look at her, stopping when he saw her eyes raging. "What's wrong?"

"What was their relationship?" She stammered.

"Who?" Sinos asked and pulled a chair out for her. He then held her by the shoulder and led her onto the chair. "Have a seat."

"What are you talking about?" He asked when she finally sat.

"Dairon and Catalyah." She asked even though she had already found out. She wanted to hear Sinos say that there was nothing between the two even if it was a lie. But that was not what Sinos said.

"This is not my tale to tell, Jasmine." He deadpanned.

"They were mates, weren't they?" She demanded.

"Yes." Sinos didn't have any choice but to say it out loud.

"I see." She laughed self-deprecatingly.

"Jas," He reached out but she swatted his hand away.

"It's okay. What did you want to discuss about my mission?" She forced her tears away.

"Why don't you get some rest?" He suggested. "You are not in the right frame…"

"Just speak!" She ordered. He had no choice.

"Okay. I sent your scepter to Clarepar sea. Your mission is to retrieve it and bring it back." He deliberately didn't tell her which part of Clarepar Sea she had to search.

He had given her a mission close to what Scarlet had given so it wouldn't be too difficult but the mention of the scepter made her pin the pieces together.

No wonder Dairon would be confident in his ability to retrieve Narilia's scepter. No wonder he would so easily go to the underworld. Narilia was not just his friend. She was also his mate's sister! Of course she would let him do whatever she wanted in the underworld.

She shook her head as everything she thought she knew mocked her.

"Jasmine?" Sinos pulled her out of her thoughts.

It was as though he was reading her mind. He took her hand and squeezed it. "Most deities don't have weaknesses. None that are known of, anyway. But Dairon had one. Catalyah."

Her tears spilled out of her eyes. "Why are you telling me this?"

"I'm not trying to dishearten you." He wiped her face. "Eight hundred years ago, everyone thought he had lost his happiness forever."

"When she died." He elaborated, and that made her heart crushed. How could she accept this kind of reality?

"Well, until you appeared." Sinos shrugged. "I didn't believe that he had any feelings for you. I thought he was trying to pass time or that you were aiming to harm him."

She raised her eyes to look at him. "I didn't even want anything to do with him yet."

"Yet." He chuckled. "Well, I knew you didn't like him either. But Jasmine, he loves you. There are many things that prove it."

"But he has a mate! An immortal can only have one mate." She almost shrieked.

"It has never happened before but that doesn't make it impossible. Maybe you are his mate too. Only he would know but from an observer's point of view, you could be."

She brushed through her hair in frustration. "Why? Why would he love me? I'm nothing like his mate—powerful, popular… What would he see in me?"

She knew that she was being ridiculous, letting insecurity gnaw at her but Sinos's next words were all it took for everything to make sense.

"When my eyes landed on you for the first time, I thought you were Catalyah."
