"How do you know that?" Jasmine frowned. Deep down she had suspected that her death was unusual. She had constantly thought about the 'woman' who had tried to set the oil on fire when the villagers wanted to burn her to death, who she had discovered was a goddess. She knew it was a stretch to think so, but she had a strong gut feeling that it was either Scarlet or someone sent by Scarlet. But how would Lolanthe know?
To prevent the vile goddess from reading her lips, Lolanthe pulled Jasmine to a wall as she explained. "Blaze investigated it. There was no evidence and no witnesses so he stopped investigating, but we are certain that it was her."
She looked panicked. "Only she knew that you had escaped to the human realm. Not even Dairon knew that you were there."
She was still pondering when she tapped her chin with her index finger. "What's Dairon got to do with this?"
Lolanthe let go of her shoulders but she didn't look relaxed. "He was sent to the human realm before you were born. Basically, he was there when you were born and when you were brought back by Blaze. He was still there when you escaped and went back. He even lived in the same village as you. If there was any probability of your presence getting exposed, he should have been the one to find you."
It made sense. She had heard Dairon mention his mission in Monten but none of it included meeting her.
"Scarlet helped you escape. This too has always been suspicious." Lolanthe added. "Not to mention, there is the fact that all the known portals to the human world were sealed after she helped you escape. At the time, we assumed you didn't want to be found but when we thought about it, we realized that it was her way of making sure no one helps you when she finally makes her move."
Jasmine felt the pain in her chest just thinking of it. Scarlet was more dangerous than she appeared.
"Do you know why she would hate me?" She didn't understand.
Lolanthe averted her gaze.
"Please, tell me if you do." Jasmine pleaded when she realized that Lolanthe was hesitating.
Lolanthe thought hard about it. Deciding that Jasmine would be more careful if she knew, she took her hand. "Come here, I'll explain it."
…
They were on top of a bridge before she realized it. It seemed like this couple had a thing for bridges. Looking around, she realized it was the same one that Blaze brought her to for a talk.
Lolanthe stared off in the distance and threw a small rock into the vast lake under them. "Deities are different. Just like humans have personalities, deities do too. There are those who don't care about anything." She smiled meaningfully and Jasmine immediately thought of the carefree Sinos.
"Those who think about nothing but love, beauty and wealth… those who live for the well being of others. Like Bardumond. Of course, there are even rarer ones—those who will always want to help the rest regardless of their nature."
The last category seemed to remind her of a specific deity and she smiled bitterly.
Jasmine patted her shoulder, snapping her out of it.
"Among such a large group, you can't lack a few power-hungry individuals who would do anything to rise up the ranks."
"Yes." Jasmine had a feeling that was where it was leading.
Lolanthe gave her a side glance and continued playing with tiny rocks, making them float a circle in the air before they splashed into the water in a beautiful pattern.
"After the war eight hundred years ago, Scarlet became close to King Rian. He was fond of her and would spend most of his time teaching her. It was mostly because he was devastated from the loss of the goddess closest to his heart—it almost became an obsession.
Everyone suspected that he was grooming her to be the Queen of gods after he steps down. It was all going perfect for her since that is all she has ever lived for." She looked at the puzzled Jasmine. "Then you happened."
"What did I do?" Jasmine was almost annoyed, getting caught in matters that happened ages before her ancestors were born.
"Nothing you knew you were doing. But sometimes it's the fact that you don't even know what you are doing to oppress them that hurts your enemies the most. You were powerful. The speed at which you climbed the ranks was extraordinary, almost bordering on suspicious. Everyone knew you would be the most powerful demigoddess even before you could walk." Lolanthe chuckled, admiration brimming in her eyes.
"Of course, King Rian couldn't be any happier. Despite you being a demigoddess, he spent so much time and effort training you that Scarlet felt threatened—not that she was wrong to feel so if you ask me." She concluded.
All this was happening because Scarlet felt her position was threatened?
"I have no interest in power." Her brows knitted. Part of her still wanted to go home. The other part wanted to explore—but there was no part of her that wanted to be a ruler of any sort. Not even in the human world.
"I know." Lolanthe let out a breath. "I don't blame her for feeling upset. Can you imagine how it would feel like to want something for centuries, only for someone else to easily get it even though they don't want it?
I would be jealous too. I just don't like how she handled it."

Jasmine couldn't agree more. No wonder she felt invisible daggers fly between her and Scarlet when they met at the academy.
"Is that why she hates Dairon?" She asked when she recalled the goddess's reaction when she saw him.
Lolanthe didn't immediately have an answer. "Dairon's case is different. He… Oh, we disappeared without a word. Blazey is worried about me. "She rubbed a crystal bracelet on her wrist, which had lit up with a small red flame inside it.
Jasmine chuckled at the silly nickname she had used to refer to her husband. These two did remind her of Harry and Sophie with their undying love.
They teleported back to King Rian's castle, and Lolanthe hugged her. "It was nice talking to you, Jas. I hope to see you soon."
"I hope so too." She smiled back. She really did hope to see Lolanthe again. They seemed to hit it off and it was not just about Scarlet.
Recalling the patterns Lolanthe had made using rocks that seemed to appear from thin air, she wondered if she could do that kind of thing. She rapped a finger against an old stone as she wondered why exactly earth power was a thing. Did it have any real benefits that excluded the admiration and hatred she hadn't signed up for? Could it protect her from Scarlet?
"Hey Jasmine." A gentle female voice interrupted her deep thoughts.
She turned to see three goddesses smiling at her kindly.
She returned the smile. "Hello." She guessed that they were earth goddesses based on their eyes that were of the same color as Lolanthe's.
"You are so beautiful." They swooned.
"Thank you, you are beautiful too."
"Who made your dress? It's gorgeous." One of them carefully touched the hem of her dress.
"Uh.. The dressmaker on Dairon's Island." She didn't want to bring any more attention to herself. Technically, she had not lied.
"Lord Dairon's dressmaker is so talented! Do you think he can make me a gown?" The goddess in a magenta gown asked.
"You can try asking him." She was getting awkward.
"I want one exactly like yours." Another goddess declared.
She didn't mind, she could just make a new one to replace it so she smiled. "You just need to show it to him and ask for a replica." She knew they would seek Maximus. Luckily, Maximus was talented and would be able to make it.
When she agreed to help them deliver scrolls of request to Maximus, they looked like they wanted to idolize her.
"You are so kind." The goddess in pink said.
"Didn't you hear what King Rian said at Lord Sinos' banquet the last time? Power is borne from within. She is so powerful, it must be because of her kind heart." Another added.
"You are exaggerating." Jasmine chuckled. Weren't they supposed to hate her, especially since they now shared an element and was potential competition? Perhaps, earth deities were generally friendly. Lolanthe was a good example.
"Right. Will you go to Goddess Marina's tea party? It's in a few days." The goddess in pink seemed to remember something. "If you would like to but don't have an invitation, I can bring you along."
"Goddess Marina?" The name made her brows raise.
The goddess nodded. "She will host it in her garden."
"I don't know…" Attend Marina's tea party? Who were they kidding?
She was about to make an excuse when the goddess beside her tried to convince her. "You can't miss it!" She leaned in to whisper. "I heard Lord Dairon will go too."
"Uh…"
She was speechless. Just how popular was Dairon?
