Jasmine's eyes widened in shock. She was not certain what shocked her more. Was it the fact that Bardumond had two sisters when she had always assumed that he had one sister, that the other sister betrayed her own family or that the other sister was a demoness? She was pretty sure that Narilia was the name of the demoness she had summoned when she accidentally snuck off to the human realm.
She debated what to ask. Betrayal was not necessarily anything to be shocked about. Love could be faked and jealousy was bound to bloom under the circumstances of Bardumond's sisters. One of them was King Rian's beloved granddaughter and the most popular goddess while the other was barely ever mentioned. She was certain—even without being told—that the few times Narilia was mentioned, she was being compared to her sister. It was bound to happen and the former might have felt like a shadow.
Betrayal didn't solve anything but she couldn't swear that she would not have felt jealous if she were in Narilia's position. Her mind was a mess when she asked, "Isn't Narilia a demoness? At least that's what I know from the few mentions of her name that I've heard. How can the daughter of deities be a demoness?"
It was the question that Bardumond expected. He looked at her for a while as though he was wondering whether or not answering her would be worth it. She wanted to tell him that he didn't have to but he spoke before she did. "She was born and grew up as a goddess. I don't know why she became a demoness but it was her choice."
There was that look in his eyes again—the one he had when he talked about missing out on marrying his sister. Her gut told her that the goddess he longed for was not Catalyah but Narilia, the traitor. His tone was different when he talked about both of his sisters and when he mentioned Narilia, it was as though her betrayal had broken him in more ways than one.
Why did he like the younger sister who he had just made out to be jealous and bitter and a traitor, instead of the elder one who was also the kindest being to have ever existed? She wondered. But she didn't want to poke his wounds any more than she had already done so she didn't ask.
"Do you want to see my garden?" He turned and asked, his face washing with what looked like a hint of a smile but was obviously not happy.
"Sure." She played along. He stated that the book with a feather on the cover was about deities and was a gift to her so she carried it along when they went to the garden. She knew that he was enthusiastic about plants because those were what he used as his primary source of medicines but something about his tone felt off. Was he really just showing her around? The more time they spent together, the more it started to feel like he was prolonging it. Was he buying time for something?
An ominous feeling settled in her stomach—the kind she had when disaster was brewing so she did the most sane thing that came to mind.
"I think I should get going. I didn't tell Dairon I was leaving." She explained, but it was an excuse.
"What a bummer." He sighed as he played with the stalk of a blue flower. "I was hoping we could spend some more time together and when I left King Rian's castle before lunch, he said that he had something to talk to Dairon about. You probably won't find him back at the island. Why don't you stay a little longer? Just half an hour."
She took it as him genuinely wanting to spend time with her so she agreed and followed him to his chamber, half of which he had turned into a workshop to process his medicines. It was interesting to learn about his methods, the ingredients he used and what purpose every ingredient served but as the minutes ticked by, she felt uneasy. When half an hour elapsed, he mentioned that Blaze wanted to have a word with her.
"How did you know that Lord Blaze wanted to speak to me? We have been together for the last hour." She pointed out his bluff.
"Signals." He shrugged like it should be obvious.
It wasn't. Her eyes narrowed. She nodded nonetheless. "I need to use the bathroom. Could you point the directions out to me? I will go to Lord Blaze in a few minutes."
"Sure. There is one on the far left of the corridor." He said and she smiled before stepping out the door.
She glanced at the end of the corridor where the bathroom was supposed to be but instead of going in that direction, she took a right turn when she was a few steps away from Bardumond's room. From their little trip to his garden, she remembered that there was a door on this side and it was not far from the main gate.
She should probably have teleported away but that was not how she and Lolanthe arrived earlier. Maybe teleportation was impossible in this castle just like it was in King Rian's castle. There was only one way to find out but that way might give away her plan.
Her steps quickened away from Bardumond's room. When she was a fair distance away, her speed picked into a dash for the door. She held the sides of her skirt so she wouldn't trip over its hem as she made a beeline for the door.
Two guards were standing outside and she was certain that they weren't there a moment ago when she walked in through this door with Bardumond. Damn it. Her instinct had been right after all.
"Lord Blaze is waiting for you in the hall, My lady. Please allow me to escort you." A man she guessed must be the butler entered as if on cue. If it wasn't already obvious enough, now she was certain that it was pre planned. He was wrong if he expected her to simply go to Blaze.

She tried to teleport which, of course, failed miserably. The result was her losing too much of her strength and being dragged to the hall against her will.
"What's the meaning of this?" She demanded when she saw the arrogant god sitting and waiting for her as if she was under an obligation to serve him.
"Is it not obvious, daughter? You will be living with your family henceforth." Blaze announced.
She gritted her teeth and her eyes met Lolanthe's across the room. Her lips twitched. Traitor.
"I already said that I don't want to. I have every right to choose where I want to live!" She protested.
"Oh no you don't." Blaze rapped a finger on the armrest of his seat. "The only thing you get to choose is your room. Bardumond must have shown you many of them. Just choose any and it will be decorated according to your tastes."
"He showed me, didn't he." Her tone was heavy with sarcasm. To think Bardumond was in this too. No wonder he started acting suspicious. He was buying them time to prepare for her stay.
However, they had another thing coming for them. She broke into a smile. "If that's what you really want, then I'm ready to play, Lord Blaze." She then signalled to the butler to follow her to the room she had chosen. "Don't you regret it."
Lolathe watched her leave and glanced at her husband. "Are you ready to explain what the f*ck you are doing?"
"Bringing her home." He gave an answer that annoyed her. Did he use her as bait to lure Jasmine into the castle just so he could deny her freedom?
"This will take a toll on her."
"I know." He sighed.
"You know?" She raised her voice. "If you know then why are you doing it?"
"What else am I supposed to be doing?" His forehead wrinkled.
Her hands flew to her hips as she glared at him. "Let her go. Why do you have to force her here when…when we've had this discussion before?" She diverted from what she was originally going to say.
"Dairon is a danger to her."
She shook her head. "No he is not. And she is old enough to know what she wants."
Blaze's eyes flared. His chest heaved uncontrollably. It took a few minutes to calm himself from the words he hated to hear the most. He turned and looked into her eyes. "The last time you said that anyone was old enough to know what they wanted and I acted like the doting father who let them do whatever they wanted, I lost two daughters in a row. So no, Lolanthe. I'm not listening to you on this."
