It had been hours since Jasmine opened the book in her hand and she had not moved from the bed. She only stretched her sore limbs when she flipped to the last page. What an interesting read. Now she knew all there was to know about the feud between demons and gods.

She left the room for a breather and bumped into Bardumond.

"I was almost starting to think that you found a way to slip out and run away." He joked, the most inappropriate kind of joke in this situation.

No longer angry, she shrugged. "I wish."

"What did you end up doing to kill so much time?" He fell into her step and walked beside her down the corridor without asking where she was going. "Should I be worried?"

"You should. I read the book you gave me. Who knows? I might know just how to befriend a demon and use them to go against your family."

He found her words amusing. Dipping his head to reach her height, he asked, "Do you remember what you read?"

Her lips moved but before she spoke, her eyes widened.

He chuckled. "I thought so."

He quickened his steps past her and she ran after him. "Wait. What did you do to me?"

"Me? I did nothing." He looked like he was having too much fun watching her blink in confusion.

"I cannot forget everything I read unless something bizarre is going on." She glared at him accusingly. "I hate that everyone is playing around with my memory like I'm a puppet of sorts."

Knowing that she was really angry about it, he held up his hand in mock surrender. "I promise, I didn't do anything. The book is enchanted. Only deities with certain qualities can access the information written in it. Everyone else can read it but they will forget everything as soon as they think about it."

She rolled her eyes. Deities and their curses. She was curious. "What qualities?"

He shrugged. "No one knows. I thought you would be an exception but you ended up forgetting the content so whatever quality it is, you don't have it."

She crossed her arms. "Whatever. It's probably not interesting information anyway."

He knew she was disappointed but didn't call her out for lying. "Are you heading to the kitchen?" He asked.

"I was going to the garden. A good walk might help me relax."

He nodded. It turned out that he was going to the garden too, but he didn't deliberately invade her space.

The garden was bright and beautiful with an assortment of colorful flowers all of which she liked, but they suddenly felt dull. Her thoughts were a jumbled mess until she came to a realization. She was out of the castle. She had not been stopped when she left with the intention of going to the garden. She glanced in the direction of the gate. It was too far away. She groaned.

If she tried to get to it, she would be noticed before she got halfway. Why did deities have to have such enormous castles? Surely they could do with smaller houses? She wouldn't have to feel like she had needles under her soles if the gate was not an inhumane distance away. But then again, they were not humans.

She sighed.

She glanced at Bardumond. She couldn't quite figure out what he was doing. It looked like he was humming for the plants before him. She gave up trying to distract him. Maybe if she could convince him…

He looked up sensing her gaze and she pursed her lips. She walked over to his side and sat down beside him on the bench, watching him resume his humming.

After a while, he stopped and focused his gaze on her.

"Do you know why Lord Blaze thinks I'm dangerous?" She asked. It was not just part of convincing him. She was curious about this too.

"He doesn't." Bardumond stifled a chuckle. "That would be making a mountain out of a molehill. How can you be dangerous?"

Not sure what he meant, her brows shot up.

"I don't mean to look down on you. It's quite the contrary." He cleared his throat to be more serious. "I don't know what exactly he is thinking but out of pure guesswork, you are not the danger. At least on your own."

"Okay." She waited for him to continue.

He did, but not before checking that they were alone. "The real danger to fire and earth deities is Dairon. If you get what I mean."

She thought about it and nodded. Some things didn't need to be pointed out.

She blew out a breath. "Is this about Goddess Alaya?"

Bardumond held her gaze for a few seconds. "That's his secret to tell. Good luck if you want to ask. His lips are tighter about that matter than the lock on King Rian's treasury."

"I don't need to know." She rubbed her palms against her shoulders even though she was not cold. "It's already bad enough that I have to pay for a feud that happened ages before I was born. I don't even know who was involved yet he assumes that Dairon will use me to get back at fire and earth deities. He has zero trust in me, yet he also tells me to believe that he can be a good father to me."

It didn't truly bother her as much as she made it seem. She didn't care much as long as she had her freedom—which she didn't, and it was why she was trying to make Bardumond pity her. She hated to use this method but she wouldn't have to if she wasn't out of choices.

She felt a hand on her shoulder and a smile threatened to form on her lips. Was he comforting her?

"I'm sorry that I can't help much." He sighed.

She nodded, disappointed that she failed. "You were willing to help. That's already good enough."

She contemplated seeking his help to get to the gate but was yet to speak when he beat her to it.

"I will give you a piece of important information. If you can use it to your advantage, good for you." He lowered his voice.

She knew that he would be in trouble if Blaze found out that he was helping her. Although she had wanted to trick him into helping her, she felt uncertain pushing him into the eye of the storm. "You don't have to."

"It's not something that could be considered helpful if anyone were to randomly think about it. It's not my fault that you have something helpful in you."

Her heart quickened as she waited for whatever he was going to say.

To expel the possibility of having anyone listen in on them, they went to his room.

He let her sit on the couch and brought her a glass of water, before saying random things to prepare her for what he claimed would be one of the most shocking things she would ever hear.

When he explained how she really ended up on Dairon's Island, she was shocked.

"You are saying that I was dead when Dairon found me?" Her eyes widened.

"That's the main point, yes."

She was confused. "But I'm alive. Are you saying that he has the ability to bring a human—or a demigoddess—back to life?"

Bardumond let out a breath. He was betraying Dairon by speaking of it but both he and Jasmine needed it. He would never be able to forgive himself watching her miss him and not be able to do anything about it. Besides, he didn't want to have to witness the wrath of an enraged, out-of-control Dairon ever again. Before it got to that—as he was certain it would if this continued—he decided that telling Jasmine was a safer bet.

He didn't meet her gaze as he broke the news. "He brought you back to life using half of his soul."

She was so shocked and confused that she blinked rapidly and placed the glass on the table. Her hand trembled at the last moment and the glass slipped off her grip before it was steady. It fell and broke, barely missing her foot.

"You catch up quickly." He praised.

"What do you mean?"

He didn't answer her but his gaze remained fixed on her foot that had gotten away with just a splash of water. She had a million questions but the one that would help right now was, would it help her in any way that she had half of Dairon's soul? It had to be the case, or Bardumond would not have told her.

"You hadn't figured it out?" He was puzzled, and she finally understood what was on his mind. If she were to get hurt physically, it might help Dairon get to her.

As if reading her mind, he shook his head. "If you get hurt in the slightest, Dairon will be forced to your side no matter where you are."

"I see." Her heart picked up its pace. She had never thought of doing such a thing but she eyed the broken glass shards decisively. Reaching for one of them, she squeezed her eyes shut and pressed it against her leg.
