Sophie looked at the unfamiliar goddess who had just appeared in her room and her heart sank. Although she had never met her before, she guessed that the goddess was here to take Jasmine's feather. She could feel it in her heart and it made her unsettled. Had the deities decided to use force because she didn't comply with their plan?
"I don't know why you are here." She was so flustered that she forgot to bow and address the goddess respectfully.
The latter didn't seem to care. She closed in on her to whisper. "Jasmine's feather."
"I don't have it." She shook her head. "I gave it to a god whose name I do not know. He claimed to be her adoptive father." She distorted the truth. No matter what, she would not give away something that could quite possibly be used to end her daughter's life.
A smile formed on Pearl's face.
…..
Marina stormed into the academy in panic, where Scarlet was teaching a little god how to fly.
"Something horrible happened!" She announced as soon as she saw Scarlet, not waiting for the latter to say a word.
Scarlet gave the little god a toy. "Play by yourself for a while. I'll be right back."
Then she dragged Marina away and narrowed her eyes in disapproval as soon as they were alone. "What's wrong with you?"
"Lord Dairon got into a fight with Lord Blaze. I heard it's because of that skank from the human realm."
"Jasmine again." Scarlet furrowed her brows as her head began to throb. Why couldn't a single day end without a nauseating mention of Jasmine? Wondering what Blaze had to do with it, she asked, "What does Lolanthe have to say?"
"No one knows where she is but rumor has it that she is the one who kidnapped that reborn loser." Marina rolled her eyes and huffed.
Scarlet let out a gentle sigh of relief that it was nothing like she thought it was. It would be tragic for her if Blaze had eyes for another female. It was already hard enough to take his attention away from Lolanthe—not that she had succeeded.
When Marina's last phrase sunk in, her eyes narrowed. "You are underestimating her. This is why you have not been able to defeat her yet."
"I will defeat her by hook or crook. She is just a demigoddess." Marina crossed her arms. She looked down on demideities. They were only slightly different from mortals. Dairon was the only exception in her eyes because he was more powerful than most gods despite being a demigod. Jasmine, on the other, was a fly she would swat effortlessly.
Scarlet cursed under her breath. "You cannot think of her that way! She was reborn. You can make any stupid mistake but underestimating a reborn demigoddess is fatal. Who knows why she is back and what powers she could have accumulated in the two years that she was dead?"
Marina didn't find her threatening. It was just two years. Nonetheless, she sighed and looked at Scarlet. "What should we do?"
Scarlet looked around to ensure they were alone even though she couldn't feel any third presence. When she was certain, she found a rock to sit on and looked at Marina. "If Dairon really fought with Blaze, he will be summoned by King Rian within a day. Bardumond is part of Blaze's family and will probably be there. Coincidentally, Sinos' hearing is tomorrow. Which means, there will be no one watching on the skank."
Marina's eyes lit up. "I will lure her to the sea and drown her."
"Not so fast." Scarlet slapped her forehead. She would never team with this brainless fool if she didn't have to. "You cannot do anything obvious. Get Pearl to go to the human realm and help me take care of an errand."
"And?" Marina was impatient.
"And you will wait patiently for my news. I will use the item that Pearl with obtain to find out why she was reborn."
Seeing Marina's confused face, she grudgingly explained, "Only by finding out the reason why she was reborn can we erase her purpose and get rid of her forever. Otherwise, it doesn't matter how many times we kill her. She will come back."
Marina's face scrunched up. But she knew that Scarlet was right so she agreed. "I will summon Pearl."
…..
Pearl eyed the human before her. What an idiot.
"Since you are disobedient, it's only right for me to punish you."
Before she could process it, a ball of white light formed on Pearl's hand and began to darken as she spoke.
"I, Goddess Pearl of the Srovian Mountains bestow upon you, disobedient creature, the curse of the full moon; and to your offspring, the curse of the sunset."
She didn't hear the rest of Pearl's words because her whole body started to ache. It was as though a knife was boring into her flesh and when she looked up, she saw the smug face on the goddess's face.
"Curse me as many times as you want. I don't have that feather." She insisted. She finally realized what the curse of the full moon was when she saw the characters start to form on her arms. She had only heard of it in passing long before Jasmine was born. It was said that the bearer of the curse of the full moon would have black markings on their body, which looked like characters of an unknown language. Every night of the full moon, the markings would feel like knives on the skin and torture the bearer with pain until the sun rose.
She dreaded what would happen but she was not going to let them hurt Jasmine.
…..
After doling out the curse, Pearl was certain that Sophie would not be able to endure. Even if she ignored her own pain, she would definitely cave once the curse of sunset started to take effect on Dahlia. It was an even better coincidence that according to Scarlet, that little girl was also the person that Jasmine loved the most. She would probably submit her own feather in exchange for lifting the curse on her sister.
Following Scarlet's instructions, she didn't directly teleport back to the realm of immortals. She left Sophie's house and walked down a street, heading for an alley that Scarlet had told her about. There was a portal that led to the back of the academy.
It was late at night and there was no one in sight between Sophie's House and the alley, so Pearl was almost scared to death when she saw someone sitting on a large rock at the end of the alley. He was leaning his back against the wall and popping what looked like peanuts into his mouth. She wanted to bolt away. She should have, yet she remained glued to the spot.
He stood and shoved the packet of peanuts into the satchel beside him before taking the few steps to reach her. "So I'm not the only one who thinks the human realm is a nice place to relax on a dark night."
She didn't know whether to be relieved. He didn't look like he knew anything but she couldn't stop herself from trembling.
"Did you have fun?" He asked, looking down at her as his tall frame towered over her.
He had asked such a positive question but in her mind, it sounded as though he had asked whether she was ready to die.
"I…yes. It's quite fun to be here." She forced the words out.
"I think so too." He slung the satchel onto his shoulder and she was about to heave a sigh when he turned to look at her. "You know what they say about dark nights. They are a perfect cover. Come, let's take a walk."
He walked ahead of her but she didn't dare to run away or teleport, following him instead.
He looked satisfied when he turned. "Humans have a saying about dark places."
She was spooked but didn't dare to ignore him. "What saying?"
They passed by a building whose lights were still on and she saw the side of his face. Chills went down her spine from how terrifying he looked. He could even scare the king of the underworld! She suddenly didn't want to hear about the saying but as they passed the building and entered another alley engulfed in darkness, he spoke nonetheless.
"If you walk in the dark, you will encounter ghosts." He looked at her over his shoulder. "But you are not scared of ghosts, being a goddess. What are you scared of, Pearl?"
She did what she should have done ages ago—turned and bolted away. But he caught up and dragged her back to the alley before she could make her fifth step.
"Please forgive me. I will not do it again." She pleaded when she realized where this was heading.
"Having mercy once is enough. But those who attack Jasmine's family deserve none. Tell Scarlet…" He paused and snickered. "Never mind. The dead tell no tales."
"I will pledge my loyalty to you!" She said in a desperate attempt to plead for her life. He had unsheathed his sword and it glistened before her eyes in the dim light, making her heart sink.
"I don't need it." By the time he finished speaking, his sword had thrust into her spine and was out, covered in blood.
