The question caught him off guard, but he had already known that she would ask sooner or later. Their eyes met and hers were filled with suspicion. "To bring nuts." He lied. Nuts were only what he found while there and decided to bring back.

She didn't buy his bullshit either, and called him out on it immediately.

"There are nuts in the realm of immortals." She pointed out.

He didn't think it was the right time to talk about what Pearl did so he bluffed. "They don't taste half as good as those in the human realm."

She rolled her eyes and ignored him, continuing to read the book on her desk. Although she was not asking anymore, he knew that he should explain the matter to her soon. He was planning on dealing with the damage that Pearl had caused. The full moon was only three weeks away and he did not want Sophie to have to go through the pain. He was trying to find a way to rid the curse as soon as possible and he knew that if he told Jasmine about it, she would be worried to death.

So, he snuck away before she could think twice about her decision to let the matter rest.

She watched his back as he left and had the urge to roll her eyes at him. Did he think she was going to keep probing even though he had already evaded the topic? She would let him talk when he wanted to—if ever—but that didn't mean curiosity wasn't killing her. She focused her attention on the book and tried not to think about it.

The following day, she went to the academy to check out the information of trainers so she could decide on one. Dairon had freed Lolanthe and Blaze had been warned against trying to force her into his castle so she no longer had any reason to be worried. She insisted on going to the academy on her own.

She found a book with general information about all the trainers and asked for permission to take it back with her to Dairon's Island for a day. She still felt uncomfortable being in the academy.

She was on her way out when she unexpectedly stumbled upon gossip.

"Is it really true?" A demigoddess whispered but Jasmine was able to hear her words clearly.

Beside her, a goddess looked left and right before lowering her voice too. "I heard that Lord Sinos was sent to the human realm to investigate her death."

"That cannot be! Why would a goddess die?" The demigoddess almost shrieked in shock. Weren't they supposed to be immortal?

"Don't tell anyone that I told you but deities can actually die."

"I know that." The former scowled.

The goddess once again did a quick sweep around to check that they were alone, obviously doing a bad job because she didn't notice Jasmine behind them. "I heard that someone found out how to kill her and had been stalking her. It's crazy, right? How does one even find out that kind of thing?"

"But then, why would Lord Sinos go to the human realm?" The demigoddess couldn't help asking.

Jasmine had a bad feeling as she eavesdropped.

"That's where she was killed." The goddess said.

Jasmine held back a gasp. Her pulse accelerated for some reason and she wanted to know more. She closed in on the duo and asked, "When did this happen?"

The two shrieked in unison and dropped whatever they were carrying in horror. When they saw that it was Jasmine, they heaved simultaneous sighs of relief.

The goddess patted her chest. "Aah! Jasmine, it's you. You scared us."

"Sorry. I couldn't help it." She chuckled and joined them. "Who are you talking about anyway?"

The two exchanged glances and decided to tell her, because she had overheard them anyway. "Goddess Pearl."

"I see. When did it happen?"

She didn't know how she managed to maintain a calm expression when her mind was on the verge of exploding. Pearl was dead? She didn't have much of an impression of her but she knew that she was Marina's friend. Why did she have a bad feeling about the death of a goddess she had only met once in passing?

The goddess's answer was all it took for everything to make sense. "Two nights ago."

Two nights ago, in the human realm. There was no such thing as a coincidence.

"I know all about what happened to Pearl." She said to Dairon as soon as she returned to his island. He looked like he was preparing to go somewhere. He stopped to look at her when he heard her words.

His silence confirmed her conclusion. It was him. She placed the books on the coffee table as though they were a distraction.

"That's why you went to the human realm in the dark of night." She looked at him, not believing her own tone. She sounded like she was asking about something that wasn't of much importance. "Why did you do it?"

He tried not to avert his gaze because he was not about to tell her. At least not yet. "I lied because I didn't want to scare you."

Her hands flew to her hips. "You know that's not what I'm asking."

Of course he knew. He sucked in a breath. "She deserved it."

"Why? What did she do?" She demanded.

He looked at her for a while and she was about to believe that he would answer her, until he grabbed his satchel that he had placed on the couch. "I need to go."

"Why? Are you unwilling to tell me?" She asked. He didn't turn back. She watched as he left without answering her yet again. Just what was it all about?

"Whatever. He can keep it a secret if he wants to." She huffed, but she knew that she was not about to let it be. She was anxious, and the feeling only intensified when a bird dropped off a letter from Bardumond.

The letter was meant for Dairon but she only found that out after reading it. It turned out, Scarlet had accused Dairon of Pearl's murder.

She folded the letter and wondered whether or not to let him know. In the end, she placed it on the table in his room. He would need it to be prepared for a summon.

For the rest of the day, she couldn't focus on what she had planned to do no matter how hard she tried. The content of the letter haunted her just as much as the fact that Dairon murdered a goddess.

How did he do it? And why?

If it was for a good reason—as her mind wanted her to believe—then why did he seem desperate for her to stop asking about it? What exactly was he hiding?

Sitting around and thinking about it didn't do anything to give her answers so she did something she probably shouldn't. She entered his study and looked around. There had to be something that would give her answers. Maybe a letter that provoked him to go after Pearl. She realized that it was the only thing she could think of so she searched through the stack of letters. It took a while for her to realize that if he had read the kind of letter that she had in mind, it would not be unopened.

She looked around for any read letters and ended up spotting scrolls that were rolled up and arranged on the shelves.

She bit her bottom lip before grabbing the first one. There was nothing but characters in the language that she was yet to learn. She groaned in displeasure and grabbed the next, then the next. Before she realized it, she had read through tens of scrolls and the content was either nothing helpful or in the language of the gods.

She made a mental note to start learning it as soon as possible and walked to the door, stopping to look back before she could touch the door handle. She glanced at the shelf again and walked over.

She had already wasted half an hour. One more minute didn't matter, right?

The next scroll made her mouth drop open when she read the content. There were only four words.

Scarlet sent Pearl. Lolanthe.

Lolanthe?

Why would Lolanthe send Dairon a scroll? Besides, where did Scarlet send Pearl?

It took a while for her to gather her brains. The last place Pearl had been to was the human realm. That was where Scarlet sent her.

Why would Scarlet send anyone to the human realm? It wasn't hard to figure out, and it became even easier when she thought about the fact that Dairon stalked the said minion and killed her. It had something to do with her.

Her lips pursed and she rolled the scroll, placing it back where she had found it before teleporting to King Rian's castle.

She brushed past Scarlet who was leaving. The latter had a smug smile like she had just accomplished her task.

Not so fast. She thought as she proceeded to King Rian's study.

"I was expecting you, little Jas."

She didn't know what to think of the overly friendly greeting, but she brushed it off with a polite response before getting to the point. "I have decided on who I want to be my trainer."

"Oh? Who is the lucky deity?" King Rian raised an eyebrow.

She looked back at him seriously. "Goddess Scarlet."
