King Rian was not entirely surprised by her choice but he asked, "Why her?"
Jasmine glanced back at him without flinching. Could she tell him that she wanted to conquer her enemy by being close to her? Of course not. She shrugged slightly. "Why not her?"
"Fair enough." King Rian nodded as though she had said something that made sense. He wrote something on a scroll which made her wonder what he was noting down. Was he trying to evaluate her or something? This was not the first time he wrote something down when she didn't think she had said anything worth writing. He scribbled for a while and when he was done, he rolled up the scroll and put it aside before grabbing the largest book she had ever seen. She guessed that it had to be a records book of some sort. From the movement of his hand, he had written her name after Scarlet's.
He looked up. "If you need help with anything, don't hesitate to let me know. It doesn't matter what it is."
Her face stiffened. Did he know something?
As soon as the thought registered, she shook it off her mind. He was probably trying to lure her into a trap so he would pry for information. At most, he only had suspicion.
She nodded subtly." Thank you. I got this."
Her response was vague, not letting him know what exactly she was talking about.
He looked amused for a fraction of a second but it quickly faded as he placed his quill on the desk. "Before you go, I have something to talk to you about."
"Okay?" She sat on the chair she had ignored the whole time.
He took one glance at her tensed posture and took out a badge from a drawer. "You look like you're in a hurry so I'll get straight to the point. Would you like to be my apprentice?"
She glanced at the red badge on his desk and averted her gaze. "I…"
"Think about it and tell me once you have made a decision." He interrupted her as though he was certain of what she was going to say and it was not what he wanted to hear.
She could only give a nod. "Okay."
"Keep the badge. It's a means of communication." He signalled, but she rejected it. It was as small as a button and she might lose it.
What if she did lose it and King Rian used it to force her into being his apprentice? She had learnt that all deities had their sinister moments and King Rian's were probably the worst.
He saw through her and didn't blame her. He couldn't swear that he had not thought of it. "Your new trainer just left. She flies too fast for you to catch up. You may want to go to the academy if you need to talk to her."
"Okay. Thank you, King Rian." She stood, ready to leave.
"Grandfather." He corrected her.
"Huh?" An audible gasp escaped her lips.
"You are my Lolathe's adopted daughter. That makes me your grandfather." He smiled, and she was even more confused.
A nagging feeling convinced her that she shouldn't agree to that kind of closeness. She couldn't explain it to herself let alone him, so she gave an excuse. "If I were to accept Goddess Lolanthe as my mother and you as my grandfather, that would mean I accept Lord Blaze as my father. And I can't do that. I only recognize Harry and Sophie Cavendish as my parents."
When she left his study, she couldn't help replaying his chuckle at her response. He sounded almost as if he was mocking her.
She quickly realized why. The couple she had just claimed to be the only ones she acknowledged only had a few more decades to be alive. After that, it was unknown how long she would have to live without them.
The realization dampened her mood, so much that she exerted too much power when teleporting and felt drained when she finally saw Scarlet. She was teaching a little god who turned to look at her as soon as she materialized into the class.
"No spacing out. You have to focus!" Her tone was stern when she realized that he was no longer paying attention. She was yet to notice Jasmine behind her.
The god continued to stare at Jasmine as if he was seeing something impossible.
Uncomfortable under his piercing gaze, she wiggled her fingers and forced a smile. "Hey."
"It's really you! How did you grow so fast?" He ran towards her and looked like he was hesitating to hug her.
"You are Gessamine, right?"
When she nodded, he looked sad. "We used to play together."
"Xarz?" She finally remembered him and picked him up, ruffling his hair with a laugh. "Life is fair, in the end. You wouldn't ever shut up about being taller than me. Guess who is taller now?"
"What's there to flaunt about? I'm much older anyway." He grumbled.
Their moment was interrupted when Scarlet sent him away and glared at Jasmine.
"I was starting to think that maybe, just maybe, you might have a brain. How wrong I was. I've never been so wrong in my life." She shook her head as though wondering how one could be so stupid.
Jasmine knew she was talking about her decision to become her trainee temporarily. She glanced in the direction that the god had disappeared to, to make sure he was gone before her smile faded. "I'm curious, Scarlet. There are many gods and goddesses in the realm of immortals. Why did it have to be Skylar?"
The latter flipped her hair. "I think you are asking the wrong goddess. That question should be reserved for your cursed demigod."
Apparently, she was certain of what Dairon did.
"Nope. It's for you." She insisted. "You could have sent anyone. Why Pearl?"
Scarlet seemed shocked, not having expected that there was someone who knew that she was behind it. Her expression calmed within seconds before a sinister smile replaced her shock. "I'll give you a piece of advice, human. Don't get ahead of yourself. Or else, you won't even know how you died."
Jasmine's brows shot up. "You sound like you know a lot. Enlighten me, do you know why Sinos was falsely accused?"
A sinister laugh reverberated through the air. Scarlet picked up the book she was using to teach Xarz and closed it before sighing through her laugh. "Jasmine. You are so naive."
When she closed in, Jasmine's eyes narrowed. "You smell like the human realm."
The realization made her tilt her head in thought. Not just like the human realm. She smelled like her parents' room!
Scarlet unhurriedly packed the rest of her stuff and took out a small bottle of perfume to spray on herself, as if Jasmine had brought a stench with her. "Get lost already. I don't want to see you unless it's during training sessions."
Her gaze remained fixed on the bottle for a while. That explained it. It was a small bottle and the name on it was in small font so she couldn't see it clearly, but she was certain that the bottle of Sophie's perfume was identical. No wonder Scarlet smelled like her parents' room. What an unpleasant coincidence.
She was about to leave when Scarlet dumped an insanely long list of books on her. "Read these for the rest of the day. We will review them together tomorrow."
How petty, she thought. As expected, most of the books were not in the academy's library.
She teleported back to Dairon's Island and checked them out at the Grand Enchanted Library. Luckily, she managed to find all of them. When she opened them and realized that they were all written in the language of gods, she rolled her eyes. No one needed to tell Scarlet that she had only been in the realm of immortals for a month. It wasn't enough time to learn the language of the gods, especially since no one had taught her.
Scarlet was doing it on purpose. She would probably call her out for not doing her assignment during the next lesson. But if she thought she would succeed, she was wrong.
Jasmine summoned her scepter without flinching. This time, it didn't drain her strength upon its arrival. She was getting more accustomed to it. She tilted it so the crystal orb was facing the books that she had arranged on her desk. "I need these translated."
She waited for some signal but got none. She wasn't certain it would work but had tried anyway. It would be tragic if the translations only worked with the scepter in her hand. Holding her breath, she opened the first book while still holding her specter and when she found that it was translated, she sent the scepter back. She breathed a sigh of relief when the translation was retained. Finally, that scepter had come to actual use.
