Jasmine spent the rest of the day reading and only took a few breaks when she needed to go to the bathroom. She unknowingly skipped lunch and only ate dinner when Rosetta looked like Dairon would kill her if she didn't get her to eat. After gobbling up a few bites, she rushed back to her room and continued reading. Unfortunately, sleep crept in before she was even halfway through the third book. So she did the only thing she could think of; she went to the kitchen to brew herself a cup of coffee.
Dairon had returned and was sitting at the kitchen table. For whatever strange reason, he was using the kitchen table as his work space and seemed to be sketching something.
"Hey, you are back." She waved in his direction.
He looked up and smiled at her. "Did you miss me too much? I knew you were fond of me even if you kept denying it."
"I'm not!" She denied the claim a little too fast, earning a chuckle. Because he seemed busy and she didn't want to be teased any further, she poured her coffee into a porcelain cup and scurried out of the kitchen.
He laughed as she disappeared and continued with what he was doing. A couple of hours later, he felt her creep into the kitchen and frowned. Intending to watch for what she was up to, he pretended not to notice her as she made herself another cup of coffee. Later, Rosetta made another one which he was certain was for her and his brows drew together. When she made another trip to the kitchen, he grabbed her hand.
"Are you trying to fry your brain?"
Resigning to her fate, she nursed the empty cup which she was intending to fill with coffee. "That's not my mission. It's Scarlet's."
It didn't take long for him to comprehend what she meant. Lolanthe had informed him that she had chosen Scarlet as her trainer. He couldn't understand what she was thinking. Was she so desperate to be tortured? Getting close to the enemy was dangerous in every way and in instances like these, draining as well.
"Don't drink any more coffee." He warned.
"But I'm sleepy…" She yawned through the whole statement and he shook his head.
"Go to sleep. I know of a realm where time moves multiple times slower. If I take you there with your books, you will have more than enough time to read them and when we come back, only a few hours will have passed." He explained.
She wasn't fully paying attention to his words, sniffing him instead. He caught her taking a whiff and couldn't help chuckling. "What is this about?"
She shook her head and pulled away from him. "I think I'm homesick."
"Why do you say that?" He asked, taking the cup away from her since she would not be needing it anymore.
Glancing at him, she averted her gaze after a second and frowned. "Earlier I thought Scarlet smelled like my mother and now I think you smell like a mixture of Dahlia's and my father's scents."
He was amused. That was because he had sought Harry to have a word with him and Dahlia found him, so he couldn't say no to playing with her. Jasmine's sense of smell seemed to have been heightened. But why would Scarlet have Sophie's scent on her?
He made a mental note to investigate but on the surface, he chuckled at her words. "That's fast. It's not been long since we spent two days in the human realm."
"There's no such thing as being home for too long." She countered in her defense. "Unfortunately, I can't go on a whim. If only I was sent to that mission in the human realm instead of Sinos."
"Wait." At the mention of Sinos, she began to realize that there were things that didn't make much sense. "Sinos didn't really need to go to the human realm to investigate Pearl's death, did he? Any god of time can check the last moment of Pearl's life."
Crap.
He was backed in a dead end and no matter what he said, it could lead in the same direction—her asking about Pearl. It was a losing battle so he decided he may as well tell her the truth.
"They couldn't find any records."
"Who tampered with it? Was it you or Goddess Lolanthe?" She asked. Before he could start to answer, she interrupted him. "Tell me the truth about at least one thing, will you? Either answer this question or tell me what Pearl did."
"Come here." He pulled her to the table where he had been working earlier and pushed his canvas to one side before helping her down on the chair opposite him.
"Scarlet sent Pearl to get your feather." He explained everything that went down when Pearl was in the human realm and Jasmine squinted her eyes.
"You are saying that Pearl placed a curse on my mother and sister?" She almost couldn't keep her voice down.
"Yes." He let out a breath. "I searched her and she didn't have your feather. Sophie didn't give it to her.
That was not what Jasmine was worried about.
"What does the curse of sunset do?" She asked. She knew a little about the curse of the full moon and they had some time to lift it before it took effect.
He was hesitant to tell her but knowing that she would research about it, it would be better if she knew from him. "It's both literal and figurative sunset. It shortens one's life dramatically. Every time the sun sets, they have an extremely high probability of dying. When the curse sets in, they will be in excruciating pain on random days when the sun sets and the pain only ends at sunrise."
"No!" Her fists clenched when she imagined Dahlia going through that kind of pain. She thought that was the worst thing that could ever happen until he said that the third time anyone experienced pain from the curse of sunset, they would die.
The part about Dahlia having an extremely high probability of dying every night twirled in her mind like a hex. "When does the curse set in?"
"It's random." He said the words that broke whatever strand of hope she had left.
"Dahlia might die on any night and you didn't care to tell me?!" She slammed her fists on the table. It immediately turned into ash.
"It's not that I didn't care… I didn't want you to be worried." He explained and tried to hold her hand.
"I'm freaking worried, okay?" She stood up, frustration starting to set in mixed with fear and sadness. "What if I don't see Dahlia again? What if mother dies from the pain of her curse too?"
He pulled her trembling body into his embrace. "It will be okay. Trust me this once, okay? I will make sure no harm comes to Sophie or Dahlia."
She knew that he meant it but that didn't do much to calm her. Her mind was in turmoil and she finally remembered the words he said earlier before she spaced out. "Did you say there is a realm where time moves multiple times slower than the realm of immortals?"
"Yes." Her sudden change of topic caught him off guard.
"Good. Let's go. I need some books." She declared and looked ready to go. It took him a few seconds to register what she had said and when he did, he went to her room and brought all the books on her desk, before following her to the Grand Enchanted Library.
"Can Bardumond lift the curses?" She asked as she took one of the books she wanted.
"He can't. Usually, it's only the deity who placed the curse that can lift it." He deadpanned.
"In this case, the goddess you killed." She glared at him and suddenly wanted to kill him.
"There are other ways." He moved behind her.
She knew that she shouldn't be mad at him for protecting her but she was angry. Maybe she merely wanted someone to take it out on and he just happened to be present.
"I promise you, this will work." He hugged her from behind, gently explaining what he was planning. Convinced, she nodded.
"What kind of books are these?" He asked about the pile she had been stacking on her arm, which he shifted to his own arm.
"My weapons. I'll be on the battlefield tomorrow."
He glanced at her and realized that she was not joking. He took her hand and teleported them to what looked like a garden with overgrown flowers and weeds.
"I'll take care of those. The inhabitants are so slow that they might take ten immortal realm years to trim them." He promised.
She looked around with interest. "What realm is this anyway?"
"The realm of sloths." Placing all the books on the table in the nearby gazebo, he led her to a swing and cleaned it before letting her sit on it. "Let's help you relax your mind first."
