I was still being cradled in my mother’s arms while the dragon Ineer stared at me while inspecting me. “Didn’t you feel any pain while attempting whatever st-” before he could finish he received another strong glare from my mother. “I-I mean there should have been a warning signal. Your body should have been rejecting the attempt to channel mana, and yet here you are with a cracked mana core.”

“Th-there was…” I answered him sheepishly cowering in my mothers arms. “Haah, and yet you continued despite the pain.” I nodded slowly as he placed a hand on his forehead in exasperation. “Get on with it, Ineer! Or do you want to become a dragon statue!?”

My father rested his hand on my mothers shoulder. “Calm down, darling. Even though he is like this he is still an expert on all things of this manner. Besides, we should listen to what he has to say.”

“Fine… No, you are right. I just can’t help it when it comes to our daughter.” He rubbed my mothers back as she calmed down. “At least someone in this family is wise.” My mothers eyebrows started to twitch in annoyance, but she allowed the dragon to continue as he turned his attention back to me.

“Now I am going to ask you a question. Do you know why children under the age of 5 shouldn’t try and use their mana core?” I shook my head. “So you really didn’t read the warning. Since you didn’t read it I will have to explain it to you. The second that someone is conceived they start to take in mana from their mother. Slowly over time this forms the base of their mana core, but after birth the mana core's development continues. A child will take in small amounts of mana from their surroundings, and their mana core will continue to develop. A mana core will not stop developing throughout a person’s life, but it doesn’t become usable until they are 5 years old. This is the point at which the mana core is structurally stable enough to support use. Do you follow?”

“Yes.” I was now wishing that I had read the warning even more. Otherwise we wouldn’t be in this mess. “What you did was incredibly reckless, and if you hadn’t passed out, you could very well have died. I have seen cases where the mana core exploded entirely, instantly ending a child’s life.” The gravity of what he said weighed down on me, and I once again swore that I wouldn’t try to do anything this reckless again. “Now then, you are lucky that yours is a simple enough case. The crack can be mended, but your mana core will be forever changed.”

“What do you mean her mana core will be changed?” My mother clearly didn’t like the indication. “This is because I will be mending her mana core with my own spell. If it was my father then maybe he could fix it without changing her mana core. It is not that big of a deal. Just that in the future she may have a propensity towards my family's magic. And as for me… well that is not important.” I spoke up Before my mother could argue.

“It is okay, mother. I trust him.” For some reason I felt like I could trust this strange dragon. “It is not that I don’t trust him. I am just worried about your future.”

“There is no need to worry. If anything this will be like a boon to her, and the rest of her mana core will be the same. The only difference will be a small sliver.” My mother looked down at my pleading eyes. “Well, it isn’t like we really have a choice do we? If you do something strange to my daughter…”

“I would never do something that would cause your ire. I learned my lesson last time. Besides, I have a daughter that is the same age, so I can understand.” My mother nodded before a surprised expression appeared on her face. “You have a daughter? Since when? Why didn’t I hear anything about this?”

“Before that there are more pressing matters. Wouldn’t you agree?” He didn’t wait for my mother to answer before placing his large hand on my head. Then a strange feeling started to make its way through my body. Eventually it pooled in my chest. “This might hurt for a second.”

The pain that followed was nothing compared to cracking my mana core. It simply felt like someone was injecting a needle into me. The pain disappeared and what replaced it was a soothing sensation. This lasted for about a minute before he pulled his hand from my head.

“That should do it. There may be temporary side effects as her core tries to adapt to the foreign mana, but she should be in the clear. Now, I will need to get back to my own daughter before my wife drags me back by my throat.” He turned around and transformed back to his dragon form.

“Wait! You still need to explain things to us!” He turned back around, and made eye contact with my mother. She started nodding her head while they stared at each other. I had no clue what was going on. “Well, you will still need to tell me about this wife and daughter of yours.”

The massive orange dragon grunted as they locked eyes again. As my mother started to nod her head again I began to understand that they were using some kind of telepathy. As whatever they were talking about ended the dragon turned around once more only to leap off the ground flapping his wings. We all sat in silence as he left.

Once he was far enough away to be a tiny dot in the sky my mother tightened her embrace and started to kiss my forehead. “You will tell me what you two spoke about right, darling?” My father broke the silence. “Of course, dear. Let us head back now. We have plenty to discuss.” We headed back to my room.

My mother sat me down once we got to my room before turning to Yumi. “Take care of her for a moment. If something happens, call us immediately.” My mother and father headed out of the room and left me alone with Yumi. Yumi and I spent the rest of the day painting which was a welcome distraction from all that had happened.

When my parents came back at night they didn’t explain what the dragon had said to me. Instead they looked over my new paintings, and showered me with praise before putting me to bed. Through the exhaustion sleep came to me easily, and before I knew it I was off in the world of dreams.
