Chapter 18: Chapter 18 : Mark & Leona VS Quogoa

The two meters tall beast kept its defensive stance and cautiously looked at Mark's party.

Seeing how it was cornered by three unknown creatures — Mark, Leona, and Catherine — it tried to judge the best course of action.

Though Mark didn't give it any time and launched his attack.

Since Mark had not used [Bersek Wave], the Quogoa's thoughts were unaffected and flowed naturally. So Mark knew the Quogoa wouldn't attack him mindlessly, hence he took the initiative himself. 

On reaching in front of the Quogoa, Mark summoned the Holy sword in his right hand and slashed diagonally from the Quogoa's left shoulder to its right thigh.

Swish!

Sensing the danger from the Holy Sword, the Quogoa jumped back hastily. At the same time, Leona attacked it from Mark's right side. 

The Quogoa dodged Leona's strike successfully as well but when Mark tried to close the distance between them, it swiped its deadly claws at him and made Mark retreat. 

Leona took it as an opportunity to inflict some damage on the Quogoa from behind — Swish! Swish! — but the Quogoa used its slim yellow tail to strike at her, which made her retreat back. 

Such an exchange of attacks happened in just a few minutes, and all of them stood in their tracks to take a few breaths and organize their thoughts. 

[Are you sure we can't use even a single skill?]

Leona sent a voice transmission to Mark. 

[Don't use skills until absolutely necessary.] He gave a curt reply and contacted Melanie, who was in [Stealth].

[Mother, be ready to protect us in danger. We are going to take a more offensive approach now.]

[Okay, son.] 

On getting Melanie's confirmation, Mark launched himself forward. 

But it seemed the Quogoa didn't want to be on the defensive either. It attacked Mark again to make him retreat. 

Unfortunately, Mark didn't follow the script. Instead, he summoned a shield in his left hand to defend himself. 

The Quogoa's sharp claws met Mark's shield — Screeeeech!!! — and produced an annoying sound. 

Mark's stomach churned because of it, but he didn't want to miss such a good opportunity, hence he went with the plan. 

Taking his stance hurriedly and using only his right hand, Mark thrust his sword straight at the Quogoa's chest, where its heart was located. 

Splut!!

Brownish blood gushed out of the Quogoa's chest, and it howled in pain.

The feeling of piercing hard flesh traveled through Mark's hands, making him uncomfortable. 

No matter how many times he had felt it, that feeling still creeped him out. 

'Shit!' 

But he forgot it and cursed under his breath when he realized he didn't succeed.

The Quogoa had already begun to retreat when it judged it couldn't penetrate the shield, that's why Mark's sword didn't reach its heart.

Though Leona didn't let such an opportunity go to waste. 

Ting!!! Ting!!!

She blocked the Quogoa's tail twice using the short sword in her left hand and thrust the sword in her right hand on its back, to pierce its heart from behind.

But before her sword could reach its back, the Quogoa's yellow fur shined in brown light — Dak!!! — and Leona's sword couldn't pierce its fur at all!

Leona frowned. 

If she had used [Sharp Blade] before attacking, the Quogoa would have been dead. Unfortunately, she was only allowed to use the skills when absolutely necessary.

Though Leona knew Mark's plan was correct for the long term, and hence she retreated with a calm expression. There was no point in attacking the Quogoa for now when she couldn't even pierce its defenses.

'So that's why mother is so successful in dealing the final blow.' Leona thought.

Melanie never gave the beasts any time to use their defensive skills. Hence she was successful in killing them even with her normal attacks.

Unfortunately, Leona didn't have [Stealth] skills so she couldn't achieve the same. 

[Mother, Cat. Be ready to kill the Quogoa if it succeeds in running away.] Mark sent a voice transmission. [And I and Leona will obstruct it until it consumes all of its Aura Points.]

As Mark had predicted, the Quogoa tried to run away many times. But Mark and Leona coordinated well to obstruct it, and it had to use [Fur Of Steel] skill a few times just to stay alive. 

The Quogoa also tried to take advantage of its invulnerable defense to run away, but again, Mark successfully blocked it.

Because even if Leona couldn't pierce its fur, Mark's holy sword could. Though the resistance was a lot higher and he couldn't reach its heart.

Mark was in admiration of the fact that the holy sword was currently only an H-rank weapon, and still, it could somewhat bypass the skill of the beast at the same rank. 

'Perhaps, because it was made up of rare ores,' he speculated.

When the Quogoa had used all of its Aura Points Mark swiftly finished it. 

Though they didn't let their guard down until Melanie made sure no more Quogoas were coming their way. 

Then Mark took out the Aura core and they hastily dealt with the body.

Finally, after reaching a somewhat safe cave they took a sigh of relief. The entire ordeal put a lot of stress on them. It might seem things went rather smoothly but they were nervous the whole time. 

Mark was even ready to face one or two failures before actually killing a beast without using skills. Hence he was pleasantly surprised when they succeeded in a single try. 

Keeping Melanie's [Stealth] aside, they had not spent even a single Energy Point and successfully obtained an H-rank core in less than 10 minutes. 

Yes. It put great pressure on them mentally. But if they could replicate such an achievement a few times daily, then their speed would increase tremendously. 

They would even be able to learn new skills which they were unable to because they spent all their Energy Points in just hunting the beasts every day. 

That was not all, Mark could even overcome his trauma this way. By standing against a dangerous beast and relying only on his physical strength to face it, only Mark knew how many times he wanted to run away. 

Though succeeding only a single time had given him an immense confidence boost. Which was necessary to overcome his trauma.

Mark could see only the benefits of using this method. But… It was quite risky. Even a single moment could cost a life in the battle.

Fortunately, he had Melanie to protect them. Who could use [Stealth] to hide and protect them when things went south.
