It’s been a few years since I was born. My mother and father had been taking care of me just perfectly, and they even spent some gold, which is the currency of this new world, to get a babysitter to watch me while they were gone.

As nice as this is, they never really taught me anything other than how to speak, which is why my first words were, of course, the cliché "dada" and "mama". Learning how to speak is very odd, and it’s very hard to learn a completely new language as the language in this world, too, is very different from Japanese.

The language that this household speaks is called Beast-men language, which confirms my suspicion of them being part beast as well. On the other hand, learning the language was quite easy. Just like in Japanese, learning the very basic characters was hard, but after getting used to them, it becomes quite easy.

I can speak full sentences now, hold short conversations, and I can read full books, albeit not the higher-end books with higher vocabulary. The books that I was mostly going for were history books and books that could potentially teach me everything about this world. However, the books were simply too high up on the shelf, and every single time that I asked my parents to grab them for me to read them, they would tell me a simple no.

Well, not that I can really blame them. I’m still quite young and figuring out the history of the world that may or may not be dark is something that a young child shouldn’t be figuring out.

If only they knew how old, I was in the past...

Thinking that, I quickly slapped my head against my forehead.

I wanted to tell them that I was reincarnated here, and that I had the knowledge of a man who was near sixty, but something also told me that if I said that, everything would go downhill. My whole existence is still a mystery, something that I wanted to know about, and if I told everybody I was a reincarnation, they would probably be questioning every single detail.

As well as that, they may look at me quite weirdly if I even bring up the fact that I am a reincarnation. I could already hear the voices of them telling me things such as:

"Reincarnation? Well... He is just a kid. He can dream of his own fantasy land…"

"Reincarnation is impossible, son. However, since you are young, you can imagine it…"

They would say that while looking back and forth between each other as if I was some random dumbass on the street!

Currently, I am writing down words from the dictionary to remember them.

Mostly verbs and words that mean things like running, walking, fighting with your sword, etc. There are quite a few words here, and there are a few characters here that can mean completely different things based on the context of the sentence.

Like, for example, there is a character that means happy, but at the same time, it can also mean sad or something along those lines...

It’s hard to memorize these characters, but in order to live in this world, I had to memorize them. However, I, too, needed to learn the other languages of the world. As much as there are many beastlike people in this world, I would be blocked by a language barrier if I just merely had that language learned.

I look up at my babysitter, and cough, trying to get her attention. She was sitting across from me, trying to knit a sweater for me to wear, so she was probably focused. Despite that, I tried to get her attention as I needed to know something about the most commonly used language in the world.

"Miss," I say toward her, and she looks up from the sweater she was making, and with a smile, she replies to me.

"Yes, what is it, Hikaru?"

I point towards the book.

"What is the most commonly used language in this world?"

She was perplexed by the question I had put to her. She cocked her head and touched her chin with her index finger.

I didn't think the question was particularly strange, but she might have.

“Well, to answer that question, I must ask you a question, Hikaru. How many races are there?”

“Too many to count…”

That was true. There was far too many races in the world and each land was separated per race.

Which, with my answer, she nodded her head.

"Simply said, there are too many languages to tally. Each race, each country, and each individual may speak a different language. There isn't a universally understood simple language. You may or may not need to master practically every language there is if you want to understand how to communicate with others... Alternately, you may learn magic and employ a Magical Translator."

I tilt my head towards her just as she did previously. Now, my head was all over the place with what she had said.

Magical Translator…? Like Machine Translation?

That was the only thought that could come to my mind at the time.

“But, miss, what if I used the Magical Translator to learn other languages. Could it be used as that?”

If I could, it would save me from using a textbook for every language, which would be useful. She responded by shaking her head, though.

That's understandable, I suppose... So, I guess it's just like machine translation after all. Because foreign languages are so complex, you might not be able to translate everything perfectly in some cases. The Demon Language, for example, or other elf dialects... Just as there are different variations of the plain elf, each of which has its own language.

“I see…”

I was disappointed, but if I made the decision to study the languages of the world, maybe this would actually help me understand the world even better.

"I'll then probably study the majority of languages... It will be useful..."

“That’s the spirit, Hikaru. I believe in you, just as both your mother and father does.”

If only you could understand where this spirit comes from…

I go back to studying, and she, too, goes back to knitting the sweater.

Winter was approaching. It would be chilly, and from what I've heard, the undead and wolves both emerge in the winter. I was never really able to establish whether the part about becoming the undead was true in my two years of life. However, I was certain that the wolves did as well because my father would frequently go out to hunt them for dinner and would always howl with them at night.

She wanted to sew a sweater for me, perhaps because winter was coming. She started to make it even though I originally rejected it, telling me it was no big issue.

Even denying her is impossible for me. I probably would be different today if I had known her in a previous life. Perhaps I wouldn’t have killed—

I swiftly shake my head.

No, I've thought about that enough.

I'm still troubled by the idea that I did that at all. Even though I was still incarcerated at the time, I felt disappointed in myself.

I take a single breath.

My father told me that I could learn magic when I was four years old. I would visit the kingdom when I was six years old to practice swordplay. Why does he want to turn me become an adventurer?

In addition, my mother taught me how to dress, cook, and do other basic household chores.

Nevertheless, when I heard that, I was really pleased. My focus would be diverted from my troubled past and instead be directed toward a promising future.

I sighed as I looked down at my wrist and saw that the skull was still encircling it. It was strange in that I was still the only one who noticed it.

I kept jotting down the new characters I was learning.

I'm trying to learn the language fluently by memorizing each and every one of them…
