Chapter 12: Fire Bolt

Little Rosin's expression, was one of complete bafflement. Which, then quickly turned into one of deep anger, as she looked at the smiling Matthew, who was currently eating a piece of yellow candy.

Asvin didn't know how to react, but he still smiled as he looked at his little sister's expression. As for Rania, Rosin's mother, she was frozen in her place, and was currently thinking the following.

'Hah! Hahaha! Really? Wow! I didn't expect him to say that to her, but this is good, she was never really challenged in any way until now, I hope they become friends, and well, it's true that I don't know anything about magic, but I still have learned to see the currents of the One Power!'.

'And this... is too much! This little boy has more One Power than anyone I have lied eyes on, his potential is even greater than some of the most talented young nobles I've seen during my life! Hah! It would be amazing if he were to marry Rosin in the future!'.

'He seems to be very nice, and if he is taught well - Of course, I don't expect him to ever reach someone like that evil Dark Crow - But, he could probably reach someone like the Green Mage, I have no doubt about that!'.

The both of them then smiled, as they remembered the young boy's multiple mischiefs during their life in Ronia village. Rosin looked at him and said, "Hmph! Rude! That's what you are, very rude! You speak like such a thing would happen. It's clear you can't even see the One Power, since you can't notice how much better I am compared to you!".

Matthew smiled, and cleared his throat, after finishing the delicious yellow piece of candy. He then said to the little girl that was very angry at the moment, "Are you sure about that? Do you even see how strong the currents of the One Power are? The ones that are floating around me? And, I would like to know one thing first, do you know any spells?".

Asvin looked at Matthew, as his mind was starting to buzz. 'Wait, he doesn't mean that... does he? No! That would be absurd! How could a child that's only seven years old, know... how to, no! The most he can do is probably to drive the One Power toward himself, and create a small blast of it!'.

Rosin looked at Matthew, and her eyes furrowed together. She "Humphed" at him. before she said, "I don't know any spells, but, why are you asking? It's not like you do. No! You know what? If you can gather even a bit of the One Power toward yourself, I will give you my allowance for the month. And, if, hahaha! By some technique, or something, you can do a spell, even if it is the easiest one, I will believe that you're better than me!".

Matthew looked at her, as his expression darkened a bit. When little Rosin saw that, she started laughing even more, 'Hahaha! Hmph! Let's see what you can do, arrogant, selfish, boy!'.

Matthew then looked at the Manos sisters, and heard Sonia say to him, "You can do it, Matt! Please, show her that you're very strong! And do that, umm, what was it? spall?".

Matthew chuckled a bit, when he heard the four-year-old girl trying to encourage him. He then looked around him, and saw the strong currents of the One Power whipping around.

He directed his hand toward one of the currents, and grabbed it. He then pulled it toward his hand more, and with his second hand, he grabbed another current.

He remembered his master's - The Wizard that passed by his village last month - words at this moment. "Three currents should do the trick for you, after all, the currents that are floating around you, are very strong compared to mine, and most other people!".

Asvin was already baffled enough, after Matthew grabbed three of the obviously strong currents of the One Power floating around him. Rosin only looked at the young boy in shock, still, she thought that this was it.

Rania, was also very shocked to see this, 'Hah! Only a select few of the young, and most talented nobles, could pull the One Power toward themselves at this age! But, if he manages to create something with this, and even perform a spell, well, that would be something incredible! I've only heard of three young lings ever doing that in our entire kingdom!'.

As for the Manos sisters, they were watching Matthew, and thought that he was acting in a weird fashion at the moment, since they couldn't see the One Power. To them, it looked like Matthew was trying to grab the air, which made them very confused.

After Matthew had three strong currents of the One Power in his hands, he started to direct them, until they slowly became circular in shape. And then, after about four or so seconds, they started to change a bit.

During this entire process, Matthew needed to concentrate a lot, since he was very young, and inexperienced as a Magician. After all, something like this was done in the blink of an eye for other Magicians.

Some even performed a spell in less than a second, and those were only the weakest of the Magicians, like the One-Star Magician from the Black Tower, who had burned the second horse during Matthew's attempted escape.

Slowly, but surely, a spark was lit around Matthew's fingers, and that little spark started rising more, as it slowly turned into a small ball of fire. This was, the spell called, Fire Bolt. One of the easiest spells to learn, but, it wasn't the easiest, in fact, there were more than 40 other spells that were much easier to grasp.

Asvin looked at Matthew, and the small ball of fire floating around him, as his eyes widened in disbelieve. 'Hah! I guess this is the true reason those two from the Black Tower didn't attack him yesterday. And were much more interested in looking at him, and talking among themselves! He truly did make them hesitate to kill, if it weren't for that, I wouldn't have made it in time!'.

'He saved himself, as well as the Manos sisters! Unfortunately, the other three kids were... ah! Damn those bastards from the Black Tower!'. His mother, Rania, looked at Matthew, as she confirmed in her head, 'Yep, he truly will achieve greatness with the right guidance! Ahh! I have to find him some kind of noble family to adopt him. Since, inside the orphanage, his talent will only get wasted!'.

Rosin looked at the young boy in front of her, as she slowly took multiple steps to reach him. After she did, she couldn't help but marvel at the small ball of fire in the young boy's hands.

'Wow! He, he can perform a spell, and a hard one at that! This is...', her shoulders fell down a little. And she thought to herself, 'He was right, I am nothing compared to him... I will never be good in magic like... hmm?'.

She felt Matthew tap her shoulders, and so, raised her head to look at him. She saw him smiling, and heard him say, "Hey! Don't lose hope, as I said, I truly believe that you can reach the likes of the Green Mage! So practice, and I am sure you will catch up to me in no time!".

He then continued, as he said, "How about we make a bet? By 18 years old, lets both try our best to get enrolled in the magic academy inside this city, and whoever becomes the better Mage at that time, will have to admit to losing? How does that sound to you?".

Rosin looked at him, and a gentle, as well as adorable smile, slowly made its way into her face. She said, "Okay! That's a deal! What was your name again? Matthew, right? Nice to meet you then, and look out, since I will reach your level, and become better in no time, I promise you that!".

Matthew looked at little Rosin, and continued smiling, as he said, "Okay! Let's see if that will happen or not!". With that, he raised his fist, and she did the same. They fist pumped!
