After Seulgi shooed everyone out of her office, she got busy with her own work. Several new things popped up in her email In Box. A few things were still pending as well, waiting on information to be gathered by either official channels or her minions, whichever took priority. Sometimes Official Channels were too slow if she needed to finesse some data with a quickness.
Typically people were pretty quick in responding to her requests, but sometimes people could be obstinate. Or, they could be away from their desks and need to be tracked down. Or any number of other things. Despite how it seemed some days, not everyone was against her or her team.
Seulgi sent out a couple of 'gentle reminders’ about the data she needs for the new project. So long as she got it after lunch, things should be fine.
She slightly grimaced from her hot tea having gone tepid. She went ahead and locked her system and went to the breakroom to warm up her tea. While waiting, she chatted with whoever came into the breakroom.
She had a moment of paranoia, feeling like someone was watching her. So, she casually looked at the doorway to see who was there only to have a profile dart away before she could see who it was. She was semi-used to this happening. One of the downsides of being the Office Madonna, she guessed. Normally, it was just someone taking a glance, but nothing creepy.
She shelved this train of thought and got back into work mode and started tackling emails. She also made a few phone calls to vendors and clients. About half of the people were there to talk to, the rest were left voice mails.
As usual, she dealt with the occasional interruption when someone had a question or a problem that she could help with. Some of these were things that probably should have been dealt with by their managers but they were too shy or embarrassed to talk to them about. She would gently remind them of those people, who are actually there to help them out as well.
A few people were afraid of their managers. There are some gruff people out there, after all. Rather than ‘snitch’ on the requesters, she would go to the manager’s supervisors and suggest that some counseling in counseling might be in order. After all, you can be preeminent in your field of expertise, but if you cannot convey your knowledge, then all that knowledge is unhelpful and unusable.
Some people were also unaware of the perception of others. Or, they just don’t care. After all, it is a job, not a popularity contest. Still, you have to be able to motivate your people to lead. If you can’t lead, you are ineffective as a leader and should not be in that position. If you cannot lead your people, you should not be in that position of authority. Also, some people’s personalities are so fundamentally different that there was no way to be able to interact, even professionally. It’s like trying to mix oil and water. It could be mixed, but it would eventually separate.
Seulgi would attempt to intercede to see if there are ways to reconcile. But there are some things that even she cannot do. Rarely do people get quietly shuffled around to make it so some people can work to the best of their abilities.
Fortunately, Karen was never in that position. She was doing enough damage without authority that it was unthinkable what would happen if she was in charge of anyone. Her mere presence has driven away several talented people already. Any reasonable management group would not put her in charge of catering an event let alone a money making enterprise. She would run a company into bankruptcy by sheer will alone. She had that kind of abhorrent talent.
Seulgi was just happy that she didn’t have to deal with that vile creature often and even more pleased that she didn’t have to associate with her ever again.
She was very glad that the Old Man had unceremoniously fired her and immediately had her escorted out of the property. Perhaps not as happy (and relieved) as her coworkers. This must be as close to salvation as they have experienced so far. Perhaps they would start making the expected production levels again. Without everyone having to cover for That One Person anymore. When everyone pulls their weight, it makes work…not easier, per se, but less arduous.
Everyone is hoping that things get back to pre-Karen levels of normal with a quickness. The faster people put her behind them, the better.
Seulgi shakes the metaphorical dust of Karen off her feet and moves on with her life and will never think of her again if she can help it. Goodbye, and good riddance as far as she was concerned.
Ding! Another email in. ‘Aw, crap,’ Seulgi thinks. There is a problem with the part from earlier. It’s not within fault tolerance again. She was BCC’d on the email chain. Fortunately, it was caught early – almost on the loading docks – so it never made it to the distribution to be installed.
The only good thing about this is that they caught it really early. Reading through the email chain, there are some flames. None of it was towards her people, but towards the distributors for not using a proper QC program. Needless this is going to affect everyone’s bottom lines, but there are mentions of lawsuits with the manufacturers for breach of contract as well as several other things. Those words were from the VP level people, so it’s serious.
There are times when there is satisfaction in seeing when someone steps on a proverbial landmine and it’s not you. This was one of those well deserved times. After all, they had been warned what would happen if their quality failed again. And it had. So, the consequences would be epic. And the fallout would be fun to watch, as a spectator.
