During lunch, the usual suspects were all in Seulgi’s office eating and joking. There were napkins and crumbs everywhere. This slightly annoyed her as she liked a tidy office and at this moment, her office was anything but tidy. This is a very common occurrence, so she knew that they would clean up after themselves and her sanctum santorum would be back to its pristine state by the time they left. That was the only reason that she allowed this chaos.

The rowdy bunch would be disturbing everyone outside her office if she left the door open. However, the problem with closing her office door was that it magnified the noise inside. Sometimes, the laughter was loud enough to bother her sensitive ears. When they saw her wince, they knew they went too far and would tone it down. Today was one such day that everyone was present and each was determined to be as obnoxious as possible. The irrepressible Nayeon was trying to outdo the Terrible Twins in who could score the biggest laughs. So far, it was a tie.

Then Yeji came up with a pun so hideous that even Jackson lost his composure and was doing a full body laugh. This was so unexpected that everyone acknowledged that the smugly smiling dark horse Yeji defiantly won today's competition.

As lunch was winding down and everyone was getting back into work mode, the cleanup crew was everyone today. They were a bit messier than usual, so every surface was wiped down and then wiped down again with a sanitary wet wipe. If anything, her office was cleaner than before when everyone camped out for lunch. Satisfied, she started to shoo everyone out to get back to being busy when a stern pair of strangers showed up at her door and knocked.

Neither of the men belong to the company as no one there had not seen either of them ever before. They were tall and well built, and while neither of them was handsome, they were both intimidating.  They had an air of authority that would brook no trouble by mere mortals. They were both in black suits that also spoke of authority.  They also had a near identical haircut.

“MIB?” quietly asked Nayeon who was promptly elbowed in the ribs by Yeji.

“Don’t flashy thing us!” prompting a harder elbow from the other side of Nayeon from Jackson.

It turns out that something always interesting happens when least expected. Like the police coming to visit.

“Kang Seulgi?” the suit on the left asked.

“Yes. How may I help you, gentlemen?”

“We need to speak to you about an issue. There has been an accusation of criminal misconduct against you. Would you please come with us?” said the suit on the right. At this point, both suits provided official badges to explain who they were.

“OK. Give me a moment, please.”

Seulgi quickly and decisively gave out instructions as to what needed to happen.  Jackson needed to call the Old Man and tell him what was happening. They would then call the company lawyers to provide immediate assistance if and when needed. Everyone else would continue as if nothing had happened and would not tell anyone about what was happening. The last order was given in such a fashion that even the hard-bitten detectives felt a chill at the implied threat.

While not in custody, she was ‘asked’ to accompany the two plain clothed detectives to the precinct to give a statement against the charges. They escorted her to a plain, unmarked car and had her sit in the back seat. The back seat was about as uncomfortable as she had expected it to be. The two officers were silent on the trip to the station. Every possible scenario of the last few weeks was playing through her head as to what this could possibly be about. This ratcheted the fear that was steadily growing in her heart. She normally enjoyed silence in general, but this time it was rather uncomfortable. These stone faced men were not giving much away as far as what was happening or why.

One of the detectives assisted her out of the car and they entered through the basement entrance. This was to protect the privacy of those who were there just to give a statement. They walked her to a plain office that screamed Interrogation Room. It looked like it was designed from one of too many police procedural dramas. All it was missing was the large one way mirrored window to be observed during the impending ‘chat’ to be complete.

When they reach the office of the two detectives, Seulgi was escorted in and asked to be seated in a hard plastic chair. They asked if she would like tea or coffee. As nervous as she was, she declined.

As opposed to what she was expecting, the detectives actually took off their official faces during the questioning and tried to make her as comfortable as possible under the circumstances.

Under the guidance of the detectives, she was asked to give a statement regarding what happened with Karen and how she came about being fired. The pernicious bug of a woman was trying to press charges against as many people as possible for wrongful termination and was going to sue everyone she could think of.

They started the questioning by asking Seulgi what happened. She recounted everything that had happened that she was aware of. She did not add anything that was speculation or hearsay, just everything that she personally observed. The officers made it very clear what they thought of the possible suit, but they still had to follow procedure and take statements.

In the line of duty, they had met every kind of vile and reprehensible kind of person. Karen was special in her own way. Even amongst the violent offenders, murderers, scammers, and even child abusers, they had never met a more selfish and entitled person than Karen in their entire careers. Despite their professional demeanor, there was an unstated, understood satisfaction in their bland faces when she got to the part where the old man roared that Karen was fired and to get out of his building.

They quickly, professionally, yet also very politely guided her through the paperwork. They helped her fill out everything, and read her statement to make sure she included everything that she just told them. For legal reasons, they could not guide what she wrote, nor could they make suggestions, but they could relish what she wrote. Just not out loud.

Once done, they drove her back to the office and dropped her out front so as to not cause any more disturbance. Being away for only two hours, she actually got back to the office before the old man could get wound up and call the lawyers.

Once it was known that she was back, the old man call her up to his office and had the head of the law department waiting for her when she got to the office.
