As the Rumor Mill was in full effect. Everyone knew that Seulgi was Taken Away by the MIB, but did not what for or why. So, when she was on her way to the elevators, all eyes, even more than the normal amount, were on her. Speculation was rife as she went to the one elevator that went to the top floor. Everyone knew that went to the Old Man’s office. So, a whole new set of rumors started to circulate.
Was she in trouble?
How much trouble was she in?
Was she going to get fired?
Was she going to jail for some heinous crime that no one knew about?
Was she actually a serial axe murderer?
Was she actually the Old Man’s love child?
(The person who made that particular assertion was actually struck, hard, by several people within reach of them, due to their temerity. Wild speculation was acceptable, disrespect was not.)
The rumor mill became more and more ludicrous. However, as obnoxious as it could get, it was – with the exception of the one person who was promptly, properly chastised – still within the bounds of propriety.
As Seulgi rose, her heart sank.
She was not looking forward to the impending interrogation. She had been on the receiving end of his interrogations before. About job related issues, when younger she received a couple about her studies and grades, and twice about boys she dated. None of them were fun. Especially the one time when she was tag teamed by the Old Man and her mother about a guy they did not approve of. (It turned out that they were right about him too, darn it.)
Seulgi knew that the Old Man actually loved her. She was the surrogate daughter in nearly every way. She knew that what he did was always in her best interest, if only from his point of view. So, she took comfort in that if nothing else.
But, today was different. This was legal and professional, not personal. This was something that the Old Man was not sure if he could help. All he knew was that some men came in, flashed badges, and took her away.
In his mind, he had his own rumor mill working overtime. Being that he was the CEO of a fairly large company, his notions of the what’s and why’s of what was happening may have been grander than those of a few floors down. He had a broader notion of potential situations that they didn’t. His speculations may have been more practical, but the ramifications of what was also going on also had a much more realistic potential result. The results could be personal, professional, or both. A bead of sweat rolled down his temple as his thoughts got darker and deeper.
He was tempted to call her mother. He was reaching for the phone when his thoughts were interrupted by a knock on the door.
“Enter.”

Seulgi gracefully glided in. Once again, the Old Man thought to himself: Seulgi, dear, you should have been a dancer.
She looked at him as he stood up, walked to the paired couches, and invited her to sit. There were already drinks and snacks on the table between the couches. Before they could start talking, there was another knock on the door and the head of the legal department entered on his own accord.
The head of the legal department was the company Nosferatu. He had the complexion of a vampire and the physique of Baron Harkonnen. There were even more rumors about him and his department. Rumors of a cabal. Rumors of unholy sacrifices. There were even rumors that they all wore plaid.
Not all of the rumors had to make sense.
After some chit chat, they settled down with some tea and cookies, both were Seulgi’s favorites and they got to business.
The Old Man started it by asking for her version of what happened.
She gave a near word-for-word recounting of what happened. She gave an exact timeline from just before when the detectives showed up at her door to when she got back to the office.
Her recital was clear, crisp, and distinct. She showed her ability to recall all detail, the minutia, sights, sounds, and even smells. All of this gave them a very clear picture of what happened and why. The Legal head had a similar thought as the Old Man: Seulgi, you should have been a lawyer. She could have been a rising star legal eagle. Sighing mentally, he shook himself and get back into her story.
The legal head almost hoped that Karen would be foolish enough to try it. He also knew a half dozen of his minions who would appreciate it as they would jump at the chance to “have to” spend time with Seulgi. Only a fool would complain about that. He never would hire a fool.
Once the full picture emerged, the Old Man assured her that she would not have to worry about such a frivolous lawsuit. Karen was fired with cause. Everything was already documented, reviewed by the legal department, and wrapped in a bow if there was any action. If this troll of a woman actually tried to proceed with any legal action, she’d be laughed out of the courtrooms.
The legal head said that they would take care of everything, even if Karen tried to go after her personally as well as professionally. Seulgi sighed quietly in relief. There was a difference between thinking that your company’s legal department would take care of her and knowing that they would. If she knew how many of the legal department personnel would fight tooth and claw to work with her, she would have never worried in the first place.
If Karen tried it, they would wipe the floor with her. There might not even be dust left. She would, legally, be reduced to atoms.
The Legal Head made a mental note to assign a few people to start digging into Karen and her past. Even if they never went to court, they might still ‘let slip’ some things to other companies, both friendly and competitive, to make sure that she was blackballed by the industry all over.
The Old Man was thinking very similar thoughts and thinking about friends and associates to notify.
Neither was concerned about the trouble that Karen brought on herself. After all, it’s her own fault. Both of them were smiling at the thought of the impending troubles of the persona non grata.
