Chapter 50: Forty Nine

Seulgi sent a mass text to Jackson, Nayeon, Yeji, TT1, and TT2 telling them about the planned excursion to the gym. She also mentioned that she was going to be meeting an Outsider with them that she’d like to introduce them to, so they could bring a +1 with them if they liked. This brought some very interesting ideas of just whom she was bringing and the relationship between these two. Nayeon and the Terrible Twins were bound for disappointment when they found out that it was not a romantic relationship. It would not stop them from gossiping about it anyway.

Without knowing exactly why, she sent an additional invite to Taeyeon. She mentioned that there would be a group of people going to the nearby gym that the company had a corporate membership. If she liked, Taeyeon would be welcome to join them.

That was a lie, because she was not sure if Taeyeon would actually be welcomed or not by the rest. Or even by herself. But, when they found out that Seulgi had invited her, they’d keep their opinions to themselves and be polite for her sake. Who knows? She might manage to be a good fit, outside of work. Stranger things have happened, right?

Seulgi was wondering if there was anyone she missed with the invite. She didn’t think so, so she figured that if she remembered someone later, she can send the invite then.

She went back into her business. Despite all that has happened recently, in both business and her personal life, the world will continue on.

She had a philosophical moment, bordering on nihilism. In her hindbrain, she thought about a video she saw on YouTube once that was very humbling. It was one of those graphic videos that started with the smallest known objects to the most massive ones. It illustrated an explanation that went from the strings that make up quarks all the way up to the largest known star. A star that is so massive that the corona would reach the orbit of Neptune. Needless to say, everything in the interior of the solar system all the way past Jupiter would be less than atoms if that had been in this solar system.

Another video in the same series gave an idea of time. It started with the Big Bang and moved forward to the near present and into the future. The vast depth of time and space is actually unimaginable. Humans can grasp the concept of 14.3 billion years, but to actually understand how long that is another story. It’s like trying to understand how large the universe is. The number of 94 billion lightyears is good in words, but having an idea of exactly how large that is is just crazy. Not to mention that is just the observable part of the universe, what is past that? That’s when things get really weird.

When thinking about that, Seulgi put into perspective, humbly so, how much trouble Karen was. She, her antics, and her personality were less than insignificant. She is not really even worth a moment of brain sweat thinking about. She and her ilk will be a bother for a moment and then *poof* be gone in the river of time and space, never to be an annoyance again in her life.

This train of thought was daunting, enlightening, frightening, awe-inspiring, and something of an epiphany. Being blessed with this reasoning, all of the shenanigans her mother, brother, and the rest of her family pull are all lessened. On the other hand, she is doubly blessed with the family that she chose in her friends. Thinking about the massive machinations that these specific people together at this particular time, this concentrated place, and under all of these incalculable circumstances are as improbable as actually having happened as it had happened.

Having all of these thoughts happening in the back of her mind as she went through all of the obligations of the day, she was suddenly filled with a serenity that she could not explain. She couldn’t explain it, but she knew that whatever life threw at her would no longer be so daunting.

She smiled to herself, got up, and went to the break room for more tea and snacks. Everyone knew most of her famous smiles; the professional smile for guests, the smile for her friends, the smile for accomplishing something in her work, and the smirk of self-satisfaction. There was a very rare evil smile meaning that she was Up To Something. But, the smile she wore just now was different. There was a satisfied acceptance of everything and everyone in it.

It was like a holy light emitted from her, granting peace and love to everyone who was graced with it. There was the hoary old joke about her being the Office Madonna. Now, she earned that title in truth.

Everyone who saw her smile forgot the rumors floating around. They forgot about Karen and her atrocious behaviors. They forgot all of the bickering and infighting that had been happening. It was suddenly easier to get along. No one knew what magic spell she had cast, nor what lasting effects, if any, were about to be granted. But they knew that the burden of coming to work was negligible now.

It’s hard to imagine the exact power that a simple smile can have. A smile and a kind word can save a life. We never know what is going on in another person’s mind or heart, we also don’t know what battles they have fought or are currently fighting. So, a kind word, a gentle smile, or a simple touch can work wonders. Seulgi’s smile did all of that and a bit more.

Everyone had always treated her with respect, pride, and a bit of awe. Now, there was a form of reverence added to that mix.

Tea acquired, snack gathered, Seulgi went back to her office and tucked back into her work.

Everyone who came onto this floor for the rest of the week was treated to a whole new environment. There was a peace that no one could explain, not even those who were working there. A couple of people actually started to inquire about transferring to this department so they could get in on this Zen like department.

No one there said anything, nor did they have to. There was an unspoken, understated, and understood conspiracy with this one particular secret. Not only did those that were affected want to keep a hold of Their Seulgi, but they also did not want to lose her to anyone else if anyone found out about her power. This included not only inside their company but outside as well.

There was no way to actually quantify the effect of Seulgi, but after today there were several marriages that were healed, two proposals that were given and accepted, and one suicidally depressed person that went to therapy.  Amongst the people on that floor, this came to be known as The Seulgi Effect.

It was unsurprisingly used to explain many things that really could not, and did not, need a better explanation.
