Unlike the village we used to live in, this one seems to take security seriously. There are two men outside, holding some kind of weapon. When we got closer, I found its shovels. I stop Euphemia from going further and take out a few meat, vegetables and rice and give it to her to put it in her spatial bag.
"You want us to trade?" She asks.
"Yes. For some water and a place to stay for tonight." A pause. "Also, I want them to make something for us."
Euphemia seems to think for a bit before asking, "And you want me to do this offer?"
I nod.
"You trust me enough for this?"
"Why wouldn't I?"
"I'm not too sure." Euphemia blinks. "I just… Well, you had been doing everything for us so I thought…"
"Sister," I say. "I can protect us from monsters and people who are terrible in general but when it comes to stuff like this, I'm useless."
She laughs softly. "I don't think you're useless. Don't say that about yourself."
I smile a little. "But you can tell, right?"
"You have never been that inclined with people, no." She smiles back, delightfully so. "But you aren't useless, okay? We got out of the village because of you."
"Did you feel useless, then, when I started acting like I'm a leader?"
"No." She answers. "I still take care of you in ways I know how."
"Good. But you're still doing the talking."
"I can do it, don't worry." Then she goes to explain, "First, we will offer them the meat. On how scarce this luxury is, it probably wouldn't take us that much." She continues. "Vegetables can be given before we leave, to show goodwill. and the rice will be our payment to that thing you want them to make for us. I'm guessing you don't want them to know you're Awakened?"
"Yes."
"Good. That would make us a target. And don't mention money. Do you understand?"
"Yes."
We continue our walk, Euphemia first, and then, the two men go stiff when they spot us.
"Who are you?" One of them asks.
Euphemia smiles pleasantly. "Hello, I'm Euphemia and this is Sophia, my sister. We are on a journey and were hoping to get some place to stay for the night."
The both of them look at each other. And then, "Sorry. You can go somewhere else."
That's when Euphemia shows the meat in her bag. "How about this for a trade? You give us a place to stay and a bit of food, and we'll be out of your hair tomorrow morning, first thing?"
And then they share a look once again. They whisper with each other.
"...att… him… meat?"
"...Kay, go…"
Then suddenly, one of them leaves. And the three of us just look at each other. Awkwardly.
"I, uh…" the guy says. "Why are you on a journey?"
"Trying more to life, I say." Euphemia smiles and the guy blushes.
I raise an eyebrow at Euphemia. Pretty face really would go a long way, huh? Even here, pretty privilege exists.
Our awkward tension breaks apart when the wooden gate opens and a middle aged man comes out.
"They said you have meat?"
Euphemia smiles like she just won the lottery. "We sure do."

"My name is Matt and I am the right hand man of the village chief here." is what the middle aged man introduces himself. We walk inside the gates and everyone is looking at us like we have two heads. "This village specializes in making a lot of pots and stuff. As you can see, this village is small considering how we aren't that needed in the town and there's only a few towns we can get to but the work is manageable and the food is enough, so…
Euphemia nods. "Yes, our village was more of a farm, and the weather is our main enemy."
"I can tell. Imagine working every time the sun is way up high, how horrible."
"And at night, you know?"
"Hear, hear."
While they're talking, Matt is guiding us further inside the village and leads us somewhere a bit secluded, but the house is bigger than we've seen.
Matt says, "This is where our village chief is staying. He's a bit old, see, so I hope you will be patient."
"No worries." Euphemia replies lightly.
Matt opens the door and the village chief is sitting down on a wooden chair and a table is in front of him where there are multiple pots, plates and utensils.
"These them?"
"Yes, sir."
"Okay." The village chief grunts. "Leave us."
Matt bows and closes the door.
"That boy, too stiff for his own good."
"He's a good man." Euphemia comments. She grabs my head and squeezes it. "Did Matt tell you why we're here?"
"He did say you want a place to stay and food for tonight. Trading it for some meat, yes?"
"Yes."
"Alright. There is a house I have told Matt you can use. It's near the gate."
Euphemia brings out the meat out of the spatial bag and offers it to the village chief.
The village chief coughs. "That fresh?"
"Of course. I wouldn't give you anything bad to someone who showed us goodwill."
"You will give that to Matt, tell him to cook it well. Dinner starts when the moon is up."
"Actually," Euphemia looks at me. "My sister here actually wanted to ask you for something."
"What is it, little girl?"
"Can you make me a big jar?" I ask. "Something where you can put water in?"
"How big?" He asks.
"Like, I don't know, enough to last us for a week."
The old man looks hesitant.
"We won't ask you to do it for free, of course." This time, Euphemia brings out rice. "We will give you this as a payment."
The old man sighs. "Consider it done. Let me ask Matt how long it would take."
Euphemia, like a cat covered in cream, smiles. "Sure. Take your time."
In some ways, isn't Euphemia much more terrifying than I am?
