Chapter 3: Adaptability

"I see. They are targeting people with runes of classes…" Kai nodded to himself.

There were other people running in the opposite direction, but the monsters flew at Kai once they felt his presence. Another thing that he learned… maybe the more runes he gets and stays with him, the more targeted he will be by monsters.

"Hehehe, this will be so fun," Kai smiled.

Kai never thought that he was an adrenaline junkie, but maybe something awoke inside him. It didn't matter, he was enjoying himself, and he had wanted to do that for quite a while.

Kai summoned two of the swords and grabbed them, and it was time to see how they worked in other circumstances. He kept firing others at the monsters and targeted the small fries. After not so long, he killed two of them, but then the big creature reached him. Kai blocked the sting with both swords in his hands, but the weight of the attack was something else… he was forced to take some steps backward.

"I see. When I don't use them for attacking, they can last for a while longer," Kai muttered and then saw two other bees approaching from the sides.

Kai lowered his stance when they tried to stab him, and soon after, he rolled forward to let the big bee pass above him. At the same time, the creature was turning around, and he chose one of the other monsters and then fired two swords at it, killing it.

"Now I get it…" Kai said and then targeted the second bee and swung both swords at it before cutting its neck. "My class and I level up differently… I suppose that means that something can happen that will make their levels and tier differ somehow."

The swords in his hands broke, and the final monster was flying toward him, so perhaps it wasn't the best time to consider his findings. Moreover, Kai only had ten mana points left, and he would need more to kill the creature…

In the end, Kai fired two swords at the creature and ran in the opposite direction once the creature slowed down.

"I get it… one point in strength and endurance increases my health by five points, and one point in magic and mentality increases my mana by the same amount. Finally, one point into speed and perception increases my stamina by five…" Kai thought, and then he frowned. "It doesn't seem like Regen works while I am fighting, though. This could be a problem."

It wasn't the best time for him to learn that, but that only made Kai frown slightly; his sense of danger had truly been dulled. The monster was quickly approaching, and Kai knew that using his free status points won't grant him extra mana.

"Well, if brute strength isn't solving your problem, then you aren't using enough," Kai said, and then he turned around after increasing his strength.

When the monster tried to impale his head, Kai moved his arms and then grabbed the sting with both hands. The sting felt like a bone filled with pointy ends on the sides, so the monster trying to move hurt his hands quite a bit. Still, he quickly jumped and then used the weight of his fall to force the beast to fall as well. Once the creature got closer to the ground, Kai smashed its head against the asphalt.

The beast tried to fight back, but Kai didn't let the creature gain any momentum by flapping its wings. After getting its head hit on the ground for the fifth time, the bee got a bit calmer and, on the sixth, stopped moving altogether.

"Hah… this was refreshing," Kai said and then smiled. "A bit painful, but refreshing…"

Kai wanted to relax for a short moment until his mana was full again and check what would happen to the wounds on his hands once his health got back to full, but then he heard a lot of noise coming from the other side of the block. The sound of explosions and objects falling. If he followed the path of destruction, Kai should find monsters that got runes, so he decided to see what was happening. Until he reaches the area, his mana will be back to full, after all.

Once Kai reached the other side of the block, he saw a swarm of bees approaching a large group of people trying to enter an underground parking lot. It didn't seem a good idea to go underground when a rain of meteors just knocked down a lot of buildings. Regardless, what caught his interest was the fact that a group of five people was watching the larger group escape, and they were using magic to fight off the creatures. Still, what really caught his interest was that one of them actually had a sword… a rapier, to be more precise.

"It seems that I am not the only one who can adapt fast…" Kai said. "Never mind that. Where did that guy get a weapon?"
